Ukrainian Women s Association of Canada союз українок канади відділ княгині ольги St. Michael s Ukrainian Women s Association of Canada April 2014 Христос Воскрес! Воїстину Воскрес! May we all rejoice in the Resurrection of Christ and with it the mystery of our salvation. The preparations continue in the expectation of the Resurrection of Jesus celebrated on Easter. The parish food coffers are full of frozen pyrohy, cabbage rolls, paska, babka and an assortment of pastry. The hustle and bustle continues in their homes preparing special items to donate to the Bazaar to be held on Saturday, April 12. The preparation of food and cooperation among the people has been excellent. Thank you for your dedication. There is also the personal spiritual preparation. People have been attending Lenten services in other churches. This is an excellent time for spiritual enhancement. We are encouraged to go to confession and accept the sacraments. It is also a time to remember the deceased. Many people brought kolachi and fruit to church on Saturday, March 15, for a Memorial Service in memory of their deceased. May their memory be eternal. On this day the names of all our deceased UWAC members were read off the commemorative plaque. In 2013 four names were added to this list, Mary Poloway, January 1; Mary Rozak, February 17; Olga Purych, August 15 and Stephanie Krikun, September 27. May their memory be eternal. Another opportunity for spiritual preparation is by attending a passia service. This passion service describes Jesus agony leading up to His crucifixion. This Passia Service will be held in our church on Sunday, April 6, at 6:00 p.m. Following the service there will be a short lecture by a guest clergy culminating in a fellowship lunch. MEMORIAL SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2014 At St. Michael s Parish As long as we remember to pray for the deceased, their souls will live in peace forever. Approximately 35 people gathered for a memorial service on this first Saturday of Lent to remember their deceased loved ones. They came carrying kolachi, one, two or three and fruit, lighting candles all in memory of the departed. Following the Divine Liturgy, Father Nicholas held a Panahyda, reading the names of all the deceased and blessing the bread and fruit. The Knyhnia Olha Ukrainian Women s Association at St. Michael s have a large plaque listing the names and dates of the departed members. Four members names were added to the plaque this past year and Father Nicholas read all the names on the UWAC plaque. May their memory be eternal. Following the service, all kolachi and fruit were brought into the hall, where they were cut up and a fellowship of blessed bread and fruit and coffee was enjoyed by everyone. Our forefathers have left us this custom and our church reinforces this belief. In the cycle of life, we are very fortunate in knowing that our souls will live forever. Once again, this Lenten season defines this cycle and culminates with the resurrection of Jesus, Easter. Thank you to the people who came to this special service. Submitted by D. Stachniak
