Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fifth Sunday after Pentecost July 5, 2009 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Christ in the Synagogue, by Gustave Doré, 1865 Power is a difficult thing to navigate, but the scripture passages for today offer a helpful corrective to traditonal assumptions. The lesson from Second Samuel speaks to the reign of the shepherd king, David, who grew greater due to his closeness with God, not displays of might. In Paul s second letter to the church in Corinth, he speaks to his own spiritual peaks and valleys and argues that power is made perfect in weakness when we are weak, Christ s power has room to grow. Mark s gospel reveals Jesus sending his disciples out with nothing but a walking stick no food, money, or extra clothes. In their physical vulnerability, he sets their hearts to discover spiritual abundance.

At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will also be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Please take this opportunity to come and meet our new Assistant Pastor, Bruce Puckett. Interfaith Hospitality Network During the week of August 9-16 the Congregation will join with Antioch Baptist to co-host homeless guests from Interfaith Hospitality Network. This means that cots for up to three families will be set up in the education building at Antioch where they will sleep and enjoy evening activities as well as share breakfast and dinner. During the day the families will be transported to the IHN day house. Approximately 30 Congregation volunteers are needed to assist with tasks such as providing meals, offering transportation, and serving as overnight chaperones. We are excited about working alongside volunteers from Antioch. If you are free to help or have questions, please contact Marilyn Christian at mchristian2@nc.rr.com or call 361-1974.
