Bishop s Charge This was the first time in his Episcopate that Bishop Michael Oulton presented a Charge to Synod. He began with a brief review of the work done through Synod Council and Committees of the Diocese since the Synod of 2010, stating a great deal has transpired since we last gathered... To place this in perspective, Bishop Michael commented that we have often heard that change is coming in reference to the church in our society. He challenged that view pointing out that change is not coming to the church change is here. Looking forward, Bishop Michael listed three major imperatives before Synod: fiscal, governance, and missional. He commented on each of these, saying he deliberately used the term imperative in order to highlight the clear priority of addressing these matters, but stressing that it is the Missional Imperative which needs to be the overarching priority and the other two need to be carried out with this in mind. This Synod of 2012 does not mark the end of the fiscal work that began at Synod 2010, but marks a crossroads and a resolve to continue the work begun at Synod 2010 to bring the finances of the Diocese into balance, working creatively and courageously in consultation with the people of the Diocese, examining all aspects of Diocesan life. He stressed that the work that needs to be done can only be accomplished with effective leadership, which requires a focussed approach to leadership development, and with improved communication strategies both for printed material and online resources. Bishop Michael moved on to speak about the theme of Synod which was Mission on the Margins, which challenges us to identify the places in our world where we are called to serve in the mission of Jesus, bringing with us his love for his people. He said, The Church does not have a mission, the mission of God has a church.... Jesus gave his mission a church where people may have life and have it in all its fullness.
