Sheil Catholic Center Turns 50! Special Blessing October 15 Sunday, October 15, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Sheil corner stone, there will be a special blessing following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Please join us for this celebration. A reception follows the ceremony. Nicaragua Coffee Sales The 2017 Nicaragua Team is selling School Grounds Coffee after all 4 Masses on October 15th and November 19th. Bags of ground or whole bean coffee are $12 each. This delicious fair trade coffee, developed by Fabretto and the 5 de Junio Cooperative in partnership with Mayorga Organics, is making a difference for hundreds of farmers in rural Nicaragua. For twelve consecutive years, the Sheil Catholic Center has sponsored a student mission trip to Cusmapa, Nicaragua where they work in collaboration with the Fabretto Children's Foundation. Our work began through our connection with Kevin Marinacci, Fabretto Chief Executive Officer, Sheil associate and a 1996 graduate of the Kellogg Business School. Student Almost Silent Retreat December 11-13 STUDENTS: Sheil has a unique retreat experience! Have you ever wondered what it might be like to build your day around prayer and silence or what the life of a monk is like? Come to the almost silent retreat after exams have finished and find out. We will live the life of the Cictercian monks in New Melleray, Iowa for two days, December 11-13 (Monday through Wednesday) The cost is $75 and scholarships are available. You will need to plan your holiday travel differently, but you won't regret it. If you need a place to stay before we leave, we will help arrange that. Student Detroit Mission Trip January 13-15, 2018 Applications due Tuesday October 31 2017 Detroit Trip You've heard about economic challenges in Detroit - its 60% drop in population over the last half century, its manufacturing jobs being outsourced, its infrastructure collapses, and its economic state of emergency. But do you know about Detroit's advent of economic and community development? This Martin Luther King weekend students from the Sheil Catholic Center will have the opportunity to hear the stories of community leaders making a difference in Detroit. This service-learning trip will use the fundamental tenets of Catholic Social Teaching to enter into a greater understanding and appreciation for the grass roots work being done in Detroit and in our own communities. The retreat will take place November 3-5. We will gather at Sheil at 5:00 p.m. on the 3rd and leave at 5:30. We will return to Sheil by 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. Sheil Elective Seminar Jesus in the Gospels Open to everyone Sheil Seminar: Jesus in the Gospels For Christians, the Gospels hold a special place as the books which tell us most about what Jesus said and did in his 33 years of life. This seminar will take a careful look at Jesus in each gospel, discuss what each one adds to our understanding, and what happens when we put them all together. Seminar meets on Thursday: October 12, 19, 26, and Nov 2, from 6:45-8:00 pm. This seminar is open to everyone.
