Unity Christ Church (Fifth and final of an occasional series on five of Unity s Truth Principles) ON BEARING FALSE WITNESS The second Key to the Kingdom or basic principle as originally printed is: Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good. Several years ago the Children s Youth Education Director of the Association of Unity Churches International asked me to revise the Five Fundamentals for use by children so they could understand. I did and that children s version was ratified first for children s use and has become what is suggested as an introduction to adults beginning a study of Unity. Only number three has been unchanged. A number of years ago most of the Unity ministries worldwide, including Unity Christ Church, adopted that version. They appear as revised on the outside of our Sunday Service program, one of the first pieces of literature a first timer will receive. The original concept as quoted in the first paragraph above is based on an Emersonian concept, that there is only a spark of divinity within. We in Unity have come to believe that although we are not all that God is, all that we are is God, which is true for all humankind and all creation for that matter. Therefore, we do not believe that there is only a spark of divinity in humankind. Humans are divine. You, I m bearing True witness to. The adult revised version in paragraph one above is Human beings are divine; they are expressions of the Christ spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good. Any changes are not because the basic principles have changed, but because the Unity Movement continues to evolve so that all who study it s principles may fully understand and utilize those truths. The Ten Commandments and other Old Testament scriptures say do not bear false witness. Jesus repeats the admonition numerous times and later New Testament writers repeat it in their letters. There are at least two meanings to this commandment. The first and most obvious is do not bear false witness includes not only not telling untruths about another, or exaggerating facts so that they are not true, or speaking ill of another. The second and lesser known or observed commandment by most people is you shall not bear false witness as to who you are in truth either It is a fact that you and I sometimes experience troubles in a multitude of ways. It nonetheless is also True that you are a child (or if you prefer) an emanation of God-spirit. Far too often we bear witness to our trials and tribulations both to ourselves and others and ignore bearing truthful witness to our son- or daughter-ship relation to God. Downing that relationship actively or by negligence is bearing false witness against yourself or myself. REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church September 2009 Page 2 Why Pray? Notes from the Board As I was updating the Unity Christ Church website (www.unitychristchurchstl.org) to include the announcement for Unity s annual World Day of Prayer, I wondered, Why must we pray? If God is omnipotent, omniscient and already knows what we want before we ask (Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:8); if it is His pleasure to give us our heart s desire (Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:4); and we re going to get what we want anyway (Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24) why must we perform the exercise of asking for what we want? I immediately turned to one of the most reliable sources, the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary. In it, Charles Fillmore defines prayer as Communion between man and God. 1 He goes on to state, It can be said to be the taking hold of God s willingness.... To one in understanding of Truth, prayer is an affirmation of that which is in Being. 2 And I m back to my original question: Why pray? The words of Jesus and those of Charles Fillmore abound with examples of the true nature of prayer and its purpose in our lives. Jesus instructs us, But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:6) Prayer is not only communing with God, but it is also the only known method by which we are able to expand our consciousness to its fullest potential. This understanding shows us that prayer is more than asking God for help in this physical world; it is in its highest sense the opening up in our soul of an innate spiritual umbilical cord that connects us with the Holy Mother, from whom we can receive a perpetual flow of life. This is the beginning of eternal life for both soul and body, the essential teaching of Jesus, which He demonstrated in overcoming death. 3 Furthermore, the potential of God mind that permeates all parts of the universe is made manifest in the material world through mankind. Thus we must understand the nature of the God to whom we pray and waken in ourselves that divine nature through which we effect our union with God. God is power: man is powerful. God is wisdom: man is wise. God is substance: man is form and shape. God is love: man is loving. God is life: man is the living. God is mind: man is the thinker. God is truth: man is truthful. 4 Through prayer, we become co-creators with God. I hope that all of the members and friends of Unity Christ Church will join us on September 10th for Unity s World Day of Prayer, from wherever you are on the planet. This year s theme, Reach In, Reach Out, We Can Change the World, reflects the importance of going within for guidance and then reaching out to help others. Together we can create heaven on earth. 5 Blessings, Judi Coleman, President Board of Trustees REFLECTIONS Reflections is a newsletter published each month by Unity Christ Church. UNITY S FIVE BASIC PRICIPLES OF TRUTH 1. God is everywhere equally present and all good. 2. Human beings are divine; they are expressions of the Christ Spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good. 3. Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest realm has its beginnings in thought. 4. Prayer and meditation are the direct link with the Mind/Heart of God. 5. Knowing the Laws of Truth is not enough. REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church September 2009 Page 4 A Thought & A Prayer: Learning, Loving and Growing Together Can you smell the cooler air in the mornings? See the school buses and the kids waiting to board; back-to-school sales; football practice; Fall television programming ads; National Football League back in the news? These are all signs of a change of season, and the orderly progression of our lives into the season of Fall. Fall is a time of in-gathering, of harvest, of enriching ourselves for the leaner times of Winter in the ways of Earth-time. For our modern society, it is a time of preparation for the Fall festivities that precede Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. At Unity Christ Church, our late Summer and Fall schedule is packed with opportunities for learning, fellowship, inviting and making new friends, learning, seeing our children having newly creative opportunities, and did I say learning? Fall CommUnity Program: Beginning the week of September 14, we will kick off our Fall CommUnity Program. Leaders will be identified by self-selection and by invitation to lead small groups meeting at the church on a day of the week and time of their choice to study together. We will study the small-group book, Cultivating God Mind Through Parables, which gives complete instructions and scripts for everything from opening prayer to meditation to the lesson activity itself. We will have a meeting the week of September 14 of all those who may be interested in attending or leading a group. Groups will then meet for seven weeks, followed by a gathering of all participants to share and celebrate our growth. Sessions will run through the week of November 2, followed by a celebration the week of November 9. Our focus is to come together to study, to connect with each other, and to grow together. These groups are led by you or someone like you who is guided to participate in a deeply meaningful way. Consider leading. Invite your friends and neighbors. Let s get together in love to cultivate God-Mind at Unity Christ Church! Prosperity Study September 9 marks the beginning of a Fall prosperity study. Prosperity study is about how we view the resources in our lives and how we move into the flow of an abundant universe. There is more than enough for all on Planet Earth, our problem is distribution. For some, money flows through their lives like a river, mighty and lush with abundance. For others, money flows through their lives like a trickle from a faucet with too little pressure. Perhaps together we can learn to open the trickle to a fuller flow. The specific class content will be announced soon. It will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning September 9, and co-taught by Glenn and Martha. As we move into shorter days, cooler temperatures, and the faster pace of children s activities, retail buildup and advertising, putting the garden to bed for the Winter, or whatever Fall has in store for us, consider attending to your own mind and heart with friends of like mind at Unity Christ Church. God loves you, and so do I. Martha Check out my blog: www.revmartha.blogspot.com PRAYER MINISTRY Dear Friends, Prayer is the foundation of Unity. Co-founders Myrtle and Charles Fillmore both had healing experiences as a result of prayer, Myrtle of tuberculosis, and Charles of a withered leg. Their consistent, dedicated efforts led to spiritual and physical transformation, and eventually the founding of the Unity Movement. Although they did not intend to found anything, their results were so dramatic that others sought their help, and the word spread geometrically. When such success is observed, people want to know and to emulate that success. Prayer is an intimate connection with God-Spirit. When we go apart and turn our thoughts to that One Spirit within us, our whole being responds. Available to us at that moment is profound peace, confidence that all is well, and that God and we are enough, no matter the challenge. An affirmation from Earnest Wilson, one of Unity s early ministers and writers, is God in the midst of me is might. [God] guides and governs the thoughts of my mind, the feelings of my heart, and the acts of my life to establish joy, health, and bounty in my life and my world. When we take an affirmation such as this into the silence and allow it to permeate every fiber of our being, it draws to us the very joy, health, and bounty we seek. This is the process of claiming our good. Wilson said it very well in his book Master Class Lessons, (Unity school of Christianity, 1938.) You and I are builders. We do not create the material with which we build, nor do we in the final analysis create the plan; but we are responsible for the use we make of available material and for the way in which we cooperate with the divine plan for our life. We should go to the architect for guidance and direction. We should go to God (14). Go to God in prayer. Allow God to be in charge. Blessings from Unity Christ Church s Prayer Ministry

REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church September 2009 Page 5 UNITY S SPIRITUAL MOVIES Kung Fu Panda is our offering for September 11. This is a surprisingly funny and emotional movie. It tells the story of a panda named Po who lives in the Valley of Peace with his father with whom he works in a noodle shop. He s a huge fan (in physical size and emotional connection) of kung fu, and despite trying really hard to master kung fu, he never quite succeeds and yet he does, in untraditional ways. The animation is spotless, and the movie is full of funny and emotional scenes, which were fantastically put together. This animated movie is for kids and adults. They will see a nice emotional story and they will laugh a lot, too. And you can't ask for a better cast (Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan)! The evening begins at 7 PM with a brief introduction on spiritual themes, virtues, & strengths, movie background; meditation, followed by the viewing of movie in full (sometimes preceded by a short film). After the movie is viewed there is collaborative discussion of spiritual & psychological themes. Marlys Allen will be the host for the evening. See you at the movies! YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRY SEPTEMBER, 2009 Order is the power upon which our youth will focus for September. The story of Mary and Martha will be used as a creative format for this power. From the Gospel of Luke 10:38 41. In this story Martha welcomes Jesus into her home. Her sister Mary sat at Jesus feet and listened to him while Martha tended to the household tasks. There is ample opportunity for illustrating order in this brief story. First, Martha represents the outer activity of the soul that is receiving the higher self. Mary represents the inner soul receptivity. Martha showed her love by service. Mary showed hers by learning at Jesus feet. Both of these activities are necessary. It is also important to note that in our desire to serve, we should not abandon our communion with our indwelling Lord. Equal value should be placed on both active service and on quiet, loving receptivity to the Spirit of truth within us (MBD, 427). ------- Uriel Starbuck supports our children along with teachers Laurie Jill Woods, Karen Lewis, and Mary Norton. In addition, Eric Schneider and Kelly Eisenhart continue to support on 5th Sundays. We are thankful for their work, and especially for the love and dedication they bring to our youth program!! Uriel is working to build a creativity program for children and parents on the 3rd Sunday. Glenn and I are supporting this effort, seeing it build continuity for the kids and parents knowing that there is a program for them each week. General Operating Fund 01/01/09 to 07/31/09 Income: $88,470.47 Expenses: $121,185.74 Income/Loss: ($32,715.27) We appreciate your continued tithes and love offerings which make it possible for Unity Christ Church to achieve its mission and vision. Even though we are affiliated with Unity School of Christianity and a member of the Association of Unity Churches, we do not receive any financial support from them. We practice and encourage laws of tithing. We know that God is the Source of this Church and we see all of our financial needs coming to us through God s many channels of abundance. We gratefully receive offerings by cash, check or credit card in person, by mail or website www.unitychristchurchstl.org. COUNSELING Both Martha and Glenn Mosley, our ministers are available for counseling by appointment, as well as by telephone and email.

CURRENT BOOKS AUTHORED BY GLENN MOSLEY AVAILABLE IN OUR BOOKSTORE: Association of Unity Churches International Its Beginnings, Its Evolution, Its Vision for Worldwide Service From the early years of the inception of the Association of Unity Churches (AUC) questions have been asked regarding the What, Who, Where, When, Why of our history. So the time has arrived to gather the historical and interesting facts, stories, data and remembrances, etc. into a descriptive volume that, hopefully will be clarifying and informative and may become a research tool for our ministers, members, churches and friends throughout the world. (pg. 1) Hands on Healing You can develop the gift of healing touch to benefit yourself, your family and your friends. You ll learn healing techniques that include light physical touch as well as moving the hands a slight distance above the body. This method known as Healing Hover Touch can: release stress; balance energy; combat disease and promote well-being. New Thought, Ancient Wisdom For more than 250 years, the New Thought movement has impacted upon the thinking of millions of people throughout the world through its searching for spiritual truth in world religions and modern science. The New Thought movement seeks to help position the soul for ways of coping with daily living. Guiding principles include the centrality of mind, a focus on the immanence of the Divine within, the practice of metaphysical healing, and the clear distinction between Jesus, the man of history, and Jesus, the Christ. The Power of Prayer Prayer is the universal action of the human spirit seeking connection with God. It can be expressed through formal recitations, meditation or as personal conversation. Its effectiveness can be measured and is influenced by such factors as the intention of the person praying, the feelings put into the prayer, as well as humility to accept whatever outcome results. Spiritual Support Groups Have you ever felt that you were all alone as you travel your spiritual path? Have you wished for spiritual companions as you expand your awareness and spiritually unfold? If your answers to these questions are yes, then Spiritual Support Group is the place for you! In Support group we offer meditation, assistance in viewing our lives and experiences from a spiritual level as well as offering spiritual exercise that keeps us spiritually focused throughout the week. These are just a few examples of the things that we do. So, if this sounds like something that will be helpful to you, please join us on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:30 P.M in the Library at Unity Christ Church.

REFLECTIONS Unity Christ Church September 2009 Page 7 FALL EQUINOX CELEBRATION. We will be celebrating the Fall Equinox on September 22, at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Unity Christ Church. This is the time when night and day are equal before we head into the darkness. In earlier times, this was harvest time. For us, in an urban setting, this is an opportunity to reconnect with the natural world, at least symbolically. We will consider the concept of balance. What does balance mean to you, especially between light and dark? This will also be a time of thanksgiving. Wear something festive (whatever that means to you) and bring a snack to share. Traditional foods are breads, nuts, apples, pomegranates, potatoes, carrots, onion, pumpkin, squash. UNITY S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER JOIN THE UNITY CHRIST CHURCH PRAYER VIGIL SEPTEMBER 10,2009. Our Church, Unity School of Christianity, the Association of Unity Churches International, and Unity ministries worldwide present: The annual Unity world community uniting in a 24-hour prayer vigil. This year's theme, "Reach in. Reach out. We Can Change the World," reflects Unity s commitment to both spiritual growth and social action. In addition to praying, individual participants and churches are encouraged to "put feet under their prayers" by reaching out to someone in need. Unity Christ Church St Louis MO will be adding new and interesting social action programs this early Fall for all who wish to participate, in addition to the Meal-A-Month program, support for Abused Women s Shelter(s), and Free literature for the Airport. Unity Christ Church invites any reading this announcement to come to be a part of holding a prayer vigil downstairs in the Prayer Chapel from 8:00 am Thursday, September 10, 2009 through 4:00 pm. (Last prayer vigil slot begins at 3:30 pm.) Please sign up on the board in the church lobby today or thereafter or call the office to place your name on the board for at least one of 16 slots on Unity World Prayer Day. Of course you may stay as long as you like. Our prayer room s consciousness is very inviting. You may pray aloud, silently, and/or keep a silent meditative-reflective vigil. This year, World Day of Prayer will truly "go global." Individuals who submit names for prayer online may also request to have the names displayed online. People around the world are invited to participate in the prayer vigil by logging on and holding others in prayer, and/or coming to church and holding a silent vigil. If you choose the online prayer vigil, please go to: www.worlddayofprayer.org. PAT REPORT We do have some fun activities coming up this fall. The trick is remembering to tell the cashier. With the holidays coming please keep this in mind as you shop at Macys! Our proceeds so for from the Schnucks scrip are up to $1041. TWB has donated $831.76. It's adding up as long as we remember to order and use our escrips card when we shop at Schnucks...and don't forget about Macys, now. Thanks for all your support! Pam Anderson SEPTEMBER AFFIRMATION I am contributing to the divine order that is unfolding in the world. You are contributing to the divine order that is unfolding in the world. We are contributing to the divine order that is unfolding in the world.

Non-Profit Organization U.S. Postage PAID St. Louis, MO Permit No. 1682 PEP TEAM REPORT September, 2009 Memo To: Unity Christ Church Board of Trustees and Church Members From: Positive Empowering Process Team (PEP Team; formerly Planning Team) RE: PEP Team Report This report is so that all of you will know what s happening with the PEP Team. The really good news is this: The puzzle is coming together; we are getting glimpses of what the whole picture will look like and we believe the end result will further the goals and visions of Unity Christ Church and be worth the effort in which so many of you have played an important role. We are in the final phase and we are looking toward the possibility that we may be complete by the end of December, 2009. The publishers of the church growth Nuggets said that we would need 18 months, or more, to complete the process from five weeks after the survey to conclusion. If we make it by the end of December, it will be 17 months. For the most part the recommendations are so intertwined that there are no more recommendations that we can forward to you until all are complete and it is an integrated whole. Those previously reported recommendations will also be integrated into those which are forthcoming. This report is submitted by the entire team: Michael Montez, Chair Meg McClelland Martha Mosley Carol Haake, Recorder Richard Hughes Glenn Mosley ALL CHURCH POTLUCK SUNDAY, September 6 Please join us for our monthly potluck on Sunday, September 6th following the service.
