Introduction: How did We Get the New Testament? The three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) were penned before AD 70. Matthew, one of the 12 disciples, recorded his first-hand account. Mark recorded the Apostle Peter's recollections. Luke, missionary companion of the Apostle Paul, consulted many eye-witnesses. John, an eyewitness of Christ, penned his gospel toward the end of the 1st century. Many New Testament Epistles were written before these gospel accounts. James, the Brother of Jesus, penned his book around AD 45, just over a decade after Christ s death. Paul wrote his epistle to the Galatians around AD 47 to 48. Early papyrus copies rapidly circulated throughout the Roman Empire. Scholars have discovered about 120 of these early manuscripts. Some even have large portions of the New Testament while others contain a single book or page. They date from about AD 100 to about AD 700. In 30 years, people had copied and transported this gospel far from its origin in Ephesus How reliable is the New Testament? Copies were not made at a single location. They [were not] deliberately conformed to a single master copy imposed by church authority. So the independence of the scribes at different locations created multiple lines of text transmission. When these independent lines agree on their text, their testimony is of the highest value. Through this process the common text accurately preserves the original writings of the apostles. Between the 1st century and the 16th, there exist over 24 thousand manuscripts when you include Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic, and other ancient languages In the Greek language alone, there are over 5400 manuscripts. This evidence serves as overwhelming confirmation of the integrity of the New Testament texts being preserved. Week 5: God Has a Plan Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 1) September 18: Ephesians 1:1-14 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: According to verse 3-4, what was God s plan before He created the world? Question for Journaling: Often times we forget the reality of verse 7. The Apostle Paul says, He is so rich in kindness RICH: 1. FULLY RESOURCED 2. ABOUNDING IN 3.WEALTH and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. God s love is quite different then the money we have in our bank account. Our money runs out, but Gods love and kindness is forever and never runs out, and He demonstrated the riches of His love, when He sent His Son to die for our sins. Given this, how does the love of God, draw you to Him, even in the darkest moments of your life? (Verses to consider, Romans 2:2-4)? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 4

Week 5 Notes (Ephesians 1:1-14) 5

Week 5: God Has a Plan Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 2) September 19: Proverbs 16:1-33 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: God does not always promise us answers throughout every moment of our lives, but He does promise us that He will never leave us. What promise does God make to us in verse 9? Question for Journaling: In verse 3 King Solomon says, Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will COMMIT: succeed. In other translations, it is commit 1.TO SET BESIDE your works. God promises us that if we give Him 2.TO PLACE BEFORE anything, our money, our time, our gifts, but the core being our hearts, He will establish His plans in our life according to his amazing will. We just have to be willing to give Him our heart and everything we have. Given this, what is God asking you to commit to in His will, that you have not done? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 6

Week 5 Notes (Proverbs 16:1-33) 7

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 Week 5: God Has a Plan For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 3) September 20: Ephesians 2:1-10 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 7, what does the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ point to for all future ages? Question for Journaling: In verse 10, the Apostle Paul says, For we are God s masterpiece. He has created us anew in MASTERPIECE: 1.POEM Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned 2.POETRY for us long ago. God created you to do good works through the good plans He has already established in your live. You were meant to do to amazing things for God. Given this, how does this verse encourage you to go do amazing things for God, as He wills it through your very live? Prayer Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 8

Week 5 Notes (Ephesians 2:1-10) 9

Week 5: God Has a Plan Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 4) September 21: 1 John 5:1-12 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 1-3, what are some of the descriptions that define a child of God? Question for Journaling: In verse 4 the Apostle John says, For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. One of the biggest plans God has for us, is the plan of faith. If we want to see victories in our life over the things of this world, such as sin, trials, etc., we have to be willing to obey God s word and trust that He is going to bring us through it so that we might become more like Him. Faith is allowed by God, so that we might walk in the plans He has for us. Given this, when you are given the opportunity for faith, do you take it, or do you pass? Why or why not? (Verses to consider, Hebrews 11:6) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 10

Week 5 Notes (1 John 5: 1-12) 11

Week 5: God Has a Plan Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 5) September 22: Philippians 2:12-18 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 12, what are we to work hard for? How does this encourage you to work harder? Question for Journaling: In verse 13 the Apostle Paul says, For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power DESIRE: to do what pleases him. I cannot tell you how much 1. EAGER 2. PASSIONATE this verse helps me when I am struggling with the sins 3. LUST of my life. Knowing that God will not allow any of us to drown or remain where we are, is an amazing reminder of His love for us. How does knowing that God is empowering you to do what pleases Him, encourage you to be more aware of his presence? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 12

Week 5 Notes (Philippians 2:12-18) 13

Week 5: God Has a Plan Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Day 6) September 23: Psalms 37:1-40 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 23-24, what does God delight in? Question for Journaling: In verse 4 King David says, Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart s desires. Relationship has DELIGHT: 1. JOY 2. GLADNESS 3. LEAN TOWARDS always been Gods plan from the beginning of creation. He loves each one of us so much and His desire is to be a part of our lives. When we delight in the Lord, it is from this relationship, that God flows the very desires and plans He has for us into our lives. Given this, how does this verse challenge you to reevaluate your relationship with God? Further, how does this verse encourage you to build and grow your relationship with God at a deeper level? (Verses to consider, John 15:5) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 14

Week 5 Notes (Psalms 37:1-40) 15

Week 6: God Lives Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 1) September 25: 1 Corinthians 3:1-23 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 2 and 3, why could Paul not teach deeper truths from the bible to the church of Corinth? Question for Journaling: In verse 16 the Apostle Paul says, Don t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit LIVES: 1. TO LIVE 2. ALIVE of God lives in you? Let us be honest, we all do stupid and dumb things. Yet, God loves us more than we can imagine. If we just stop to acknowledge that He is there we can be more aware of His presence in our lives. How does this verse challenge you to seek His presence more moment by moment in your life? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 16

Week 6 Notes (1 Corinthians 3:1-23) 17

Week 6: God Living Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 2) September 26: Ephesians 3:14-21 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In verse 19 the Apostle Paul says, May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. What do you think makes God s love too great to understand? Question for Journaling: In verse 16 and 17 the Apostle Paul says, I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. 17 Then EMPOWER: 1. STRENGTHEN 2. MAKE STRONG 3. FILL WITH POWER Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God s love and keep you strong. When you think about it, would you not want someone praying this over your life? God strengthen them so you can live in them. Sin is the one thing that has always separated us from God and keeps Him from making a home in our hearts. God is doing everything He can to bring the sinner to the cross where they can be cleansed and forgiven for all their sins. How does knowing that God wants to make a home in your friend s heart, co-worker, family member, encourage you to pray for them? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 18

Week 6 Notes (Ephesians 3:14-21) 19

Week 6: God Living Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 3) September 27: John 14:15-31 I learned from my reading today: WORLD: 1. WORLDY AFFAIRS 2. INHABITANTS OF THE WORLD 3. ADORMENT Going Deeper: Per verse 17, why cannot the world receive the Holy Spirit? (Verses to consider, 1 John 2:15-17) Question for Journaling: Verse 22 begins by Judas asking a question, Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large? In verse 23 Jesus replies, All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. In other words, the promise of God to come make a home in us, is based on our love for Him, followed by our obedience. In other words, God reveals Himself to every person, but they have the choice to choose to love Him and obey Him or not. God will not force Himself into anyone s life. Given this, what you think this says about the reality of love and obedience? Why do you think the action of love and obedience cannot be separated? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 20

Week 6 Notes (John 14:15-31) 21

Week 6: God Living Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 4) September 28: 2 Timothy 1:3-18 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 7, what kind of Spirit has God given us? Question for Journaling: In 13-14 the Apostle Paul says, Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me a pattern GUARD: 1. KEEP 2. WATCH OVER 3. OBSERVE shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. 14 Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you. Listening to the Holy Spirit as we walk with God is a very important part of our relationship with Him. If we do not guard the very things He teaches us, then we can turn from wholesome teaching and follow the lies of Satan and the world. Given this, what are somethings you can to ensure that you are guarding the very words God speaks to you? (Verses to consider, Proverbs 4:23) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 22

Week 6 Notes (2 Timothy 1:3-18) 23

Week 6: God Living Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 5) September 29: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: What are some of the descriptions that the Apostle Paul uses to describe an unbeliever and a believer? Question for Journaling: In verse 16 God says, "And what union can there be between God s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the IDOL: 1. FALSE GOD 2. IMAGE OF WORSHIP living God. As God said: I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people." In other words, false Gods and the Holy Spirit do not mix. God calls us to completely separate ourselves from worshipping anything in our life that is not of Him, to follow His Spirit living in us. When we choose to worship other things in our life over God, we are choosing to bring the Holy Spirit into our sins. Given this, is there anything that comes before God in your life? How might you change your lifestyle to put God first. (Verses to consider, 1 Corinthians 6:15-17) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 24

Week 6 Notes (2 Corinthians 6:14-18) 25

Week 6: God Living Through Us Memory Verse: Galatians 2:20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Day 6) September 30: Ephesians 5:15-20 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In verse 17, the Apostle Paul says, "Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do." How does this encourage you to seek Gods will, before doing? Question for Journaling: In verse 18 the Apostle Paul says, " Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit." When you really think about, if we are not filling our life with God, then we are filling it with other things. Given this, what are some things you can do to allow the Holy Spirit to fill you? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 26

Week 6 Notes (Ephesians 5:15-20) 27

Week 7: God Does Miracles Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 1) October 2: Deuteronomy 10:12-22 I learned from my reading today: Deeper: Per verse 12, what does God require of each person? Question for Journaling: In verse 21 Moses says, He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. What miracles have you seen God do in your life or in the life of others? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 28

Week 7 Notes (Deuteronomy 10:12-22) 29

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 Week 7: God Does Miracles I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 2) October 3: Luke 18:18-30 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 22, why do you think the rich man refused to give away his possessions to the poor? What do you think this says about the cost to follow Jesus? Question for Journaling: In verse 25-27 Jesus says, In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God! Those who heard this said, Then who in the world can be saved? He replied, What is impossible for people is possible with God. The greatest miracle that God has ever done is provided a way for sinful people to be saved. All throughout the bible we see the truth that man is wicked and there is nothing he or she can do to save themselves from their sins. This is why God sent His son Jesus to die on the cross for sinners because He loves us so much and wants us to be with Him in heaven for eternity. Given this, if you were to put the miracle of your life into words, what would you say? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 30

Week 7 Notes (Luke 18:18-30) 31

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 Week 7: God Does Miracles I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 3) October 4: Mark 9:14-29 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In verse 29, what was Jesus s response to the disciples on why they could not cast out the evil spirit from the boy? Question for Journaling: In verse 22 the man says to Jesus, The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, BELIEVE: trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if 1. HAVE FAITH IN you can. Jesus responds in verse 23, What do you 2. TRUST IN 3. HAVE CONFIDENCE mean, If I can? Jesus asked. Anything is possible if a person believes. Miracles always begin by believing. If we want God to perform miracles in our life, we have to believe and trust that He can. Though miracles are never based on our will but His, He is always looking for a heart that believes in Him. Given this, like the father of the story, is there a specific event in your life, where you ask God s help to help you believe? What did it do to your faith and trust in Him? (Verses to consider, Matthew 26:39) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 32

Week 7 Notes (Mark 9:14-29) 33

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 Week 7: God Does Miracles I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 4) October 5: Luke 8:40-56 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 49 what did the messenger tell Jairus? What do you think this says about the messenger s faith? Question for Journaling: In verse 43-44 Luke says, A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure. Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped. In verse 49 Jesus responds to women and says, Daughter, he said to her, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. These words are remarkable. It was not selfrighteousness, or self-power, or good works, that healed this women but her faith to believe that Jesus could help her. With this said, where is God giving you the opportunity to believe in Him? Like this women, how are you reaching out to touch the heart of God, to prove to Him that you believe in Him? (Verses to consider, Hebrews 11:6) Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 34

Week 7 Notes (Luke 8:40-56) 35

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 Week 7: God Does Miracles I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 5) October 6: Psalms 9:1-20 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 10, who does God not abandoned? Question for Journaling: In verse 1 King David says, I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. Telling others about the things God has done for us, should be an important piece in our relationship with Jesus. Telling others about Gods PRAISE: 1. COMMENDATION 2. APPROVAL miracles brings praise to Him. Given this, is there something that God has done that you can share with someone who does not know Jesus? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 36

Week 7 Notes (Psalms 9:1-20) 37

Memory Verse: Jeremiah 32:27 Week 7: God Does Miracles I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me? (Day 6) October 7: Mark 6:1-6 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 3, what were the people of Jesus own hometown scoffing about Him? Question for Journaling: In verse 5-6 Mark says, And because of their unbelief, He couldn t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And He was amazed at their unbelief. Out all things that God, the UNBELIEF: 1. UNFAITHFULNESS 2. DISTRUST 3. WITHOUT PERSUASION maker of the universe, is amazed about, one is our disbelief. Given this, how does this challenge your faith in Jesus now and encourage you to beg God for more opportunities to grow in your in faith in Him? Week 7 Notes (Mark 6:1-6) 39

Week 8: Heaven Is For Real Memory Verse: John 14:2 There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 1) October 9: John 14:1-14 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In order to understand chapter 14 a little more, we need to understand chapter 13. In chapter 13 verse 36, Jesus tells the disciples that He is going away and they cannot follow Him. In other words, Jesus is going to die on the cross for the sins of the world, be raised from the dead three days later, and then return to His Father in Heaven. In chapter 14 Jesus mentions this again, but this time, He tells the disciples and all believers of the world, that He is going to prepare a place for them, and He will come back to take them to Heaven to be with Him forever. Jesus does not want us to think that He has abandoned us, but wants us to be comforted knowing that He is with us always and will come back to take us Home. Given this, per verse 1, what does Jesus want us to do so that we are not troubled or in other words doubtful about his return? KNOW: 1. COME TO KNOW 2. REALIZE 3. LEARN Question for Journaling: In verse 7 Jesus says to Phillip, "If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him! In what ways has Jesus revealed Father God to you? My Prayer Praise for: Request for: Forgiveness for: 40

Week 8 Notes (John 14:1-14) 41

Memory Verse: John 14:2 Week 8: Heaven Is For Real There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 2) October 10: Psalms 19:1-14 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In verse 12, King David says, "How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults." How can we know if we are sinning against God (See verse 8)? Question for Journaling: In verse 1-2 King David says, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his HEAVEN: 1. SKY 2. ATMOSPHERE craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known." How have the heavens helped you to know God? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 42

Week 8 Notes (Psalms 19:1-14) 43

Memory Verse: John 14:2 Week 8: Heaven Is For Real There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 3) October 11: Matthew 6:19-34 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: How does verse 24 challenge you to reevaluate your heart to see what you are truly devoted to? Question for Journaling: In verse 19, Jesus says, " Don t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, TREASURE: 1. STOREHOUSE FOR PRECIOUS THINGS and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." In other words, heaven is not about how much stuff you collect on earth, but the way you live and the change and transformation of your heart. By choosing to follow Jesus, we can move from a sinful and earthly way of living to a heavenly way of living, for it is our heart and not our stuff that will remain with Christ in heaven for eternity. Knowing this, how does this encourage you to examine your heart, move away from the sins in your life, so that you can become like Jesus? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 44

Week 8 Notes (Matthew 6:19-34) 45

Memory Verse: John 14:2 Week 8: Heaven Is For Real There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 4) October 12: Isaiah 55:1-13 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: In verse 3 God says, "Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life." A big part of our relationship with Jesus has to do with listening to what He tells us. Often times many have a lot to say to God, but very few are listening. Given this, what can you do to become a better listener as God speaks to you? Question for Journaling: In verse 8-9, God says, " My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts." Not only do the heavens declare the power of God, but the wisdom of God. The heavens declare His wisdom over everything. We can never understand the wisdom of God, but we can be aware that He is the one who knows all things. Given this, how does knowing that He holds all answers, encourage you to seek Him for instruction and wisdom throughout each moment of your life? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 46

Week 8 Notes (Isaiah 55:1-13) 47

Memory Verse: John 14:2 Week 8: Heaven Is For Real There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 5) October 13: Colossians 3:1-17 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: Per verse 5-9, what are some of the earthly things mentioned by the Apostle Paul that we are to remove from our lives? Question for Journaling: In verse 2, the Apostle Paul says, " Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth." When you really think about it, if we want to live a heavenly lifestyle, we must be willing to surrender to God the things of this earth that displease Him. We are called to a better way of living. Given this, would you say that the reality of heaven has affected the way you live your life? Why or why not? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 48

Week 8 Notes (Colossians 3:1-17) 49

Memory Verse: John 14:2 Week 8: Heaven Is For Real There is more than enough room in my Father s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? (Day 6) October 14: Revelation 21:1-27 I learned from my reading today: Going Deeper: What are some of the descriptions of the new heaven and earth? Question for Journaling: In verse 4, the God says, " He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever. No one can imagine this reality, but it is true. Honestly, if we just hope for things on this earth, then we will miss out on the amazing things that God has in store for us as believers. We should always be looking and hoping for what is to come. Given this, how has the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection changed the way you see this world and the world to come? Praise for: My Prayer Request for: Forgiveness for: 50
