Volume 44, Issue 6 March 13, 2019 the illumination news from New Wednesday Night Series, March 13 th and March 20th The Appearance of Some Greeks in the Gospel of John, led by Dr. Jim Freeman, Ph.D. Jeffords Hall, 6:30 p.m. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus refuses to fully reveal his identity by saying, My hour has not yet come. In John s Gospel, the full revelation of Jesus divinity takes place when facing his crucifixion he finally says, My hour has come. This is keyed by the mysterious appearance of some Greeks who wish to see him. What possible connection does the appearance of some Greeks have to do with the crucifixion? Might it have something to do with the word logos in Greek, the word used to describe Jesus full divinity at the very beginning of the Gospel? Logos has a very rich and complex history in Greek philosophy. Is there some connection between that history and audience for whom John is writing this Gospel? To find out, join us as his program continues on March 20 th. Jim Freeman, a parishioner of St. David s, has a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Rice University. He has had a long career in independent schools, having been headmaster of three different schools in Texas. He presently teaches Latin and Philosophy at Blessed Trinity School in Roswell. New Men s Bible Study Beginning in Lent Men s Saturday Bible Study will begin a discussion of Mark s Gospel. Come join us! No experience needed and no outside work required. We meet Saturday mornings in Grace Parish Hall from 8:30 9:30. Like all of the gospels, the Gospel of Mark was originally composed from oral testimony of earliest Christians, and maintained by most of them in oral form, even after it was written. You could say then they knew it by heart in every sense of the phrase. Our goal for this session is not to memorize it or know the gospel by heart, but through reading and reflection to understand what it is telling us today. Contact Chris Burpo at 770-569- 0112 or cburpo@mindspring.com, or just show up on a Saturday morning. 59 & Holding Play Outing at the new Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theatre, April 7, 2:30 pm, senior tickets are $20. HEALING PRAYER MINISTRY Year Round Stewardship Ministry Highlight God, our Creator, we are held in your everlasting arms, Jesus, our Savior, we are healed by your wounded hands, Holy Spirit, be present as we reach out to one another in love. Amen Our scripture contains many stories of the healing power of God. One can find stories of God s healing throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. Stories of healing are an integral part of our Christian identity and our experience as a Faith Community. On Sunday, January 26, 2014 our St. David s community commissioned Healing Prayer ministers to begin a three-fold Healing ministry. Since then, prayer ministers have been available for healing prayer and unction at each of our Sunday morning services. In addition, we offer Healing of Memories for those who desire the deeper healing that is necessary when one carries the spiritual wounds of abandonment, abuse, addiction, or loss. And also, we take time to come together for healing prayer and to offer thanksgiving for God s healing action in our lives and our communities as we gather together in faith and worship on a quarterly basis. Parishioners and visitors are invited and encouraged to participate in one or all of these healing opportunities as we stand in the knowledge that it is God s desire that we live in the fullness of His love and mercy. CENTERING PRAYER Silence is God s first language. Everything else is a poor translation. Thomas Keating distractions, including thoughts, words, and even emotions. It moves prayer from a conversation with God to being in communion with God. In today s busy world this type of prayer is richly rewarding as it invites the practitioner to stop and simply be present to God presence. Centering prayer can be done individually but it often helps to begin with a group for support and accountability. More information can be found online at https://www.contemplativeoutreach.org Centering Prayer meets from 10am-11am, in the St. Gabriel room downstairs at the end of the mailbox hallway. Future dates are: 3/27, 4/3, 5/1. Centering Prayer is a deeply rewarding prayer practice that seeks to open the mind and heart to experience the presence of God through silence and stillness. It is a spiritual discipline that takes practice to empty the mind from www.stdavidchurch.org 5

NORTH FULTON COMMUNITY CHARITIES Did you know that St. David s was one of the founders of North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC)? We continue to support NFCC with volunteers and with our donations. YOUR contributions to the Food Pantry are especially important and ever so easy to do: Just bring your food donation to church with you! Do you grocery shop every week? How simple would it be to add one item to your basket and bring it to the blue bin in the mailbox hallway each Sunday! If you have household items or clothing we are asking you to drop them off directly to NFCC yourself as it is becoming increasingly difficult get them from the church to NFCC. Each month this year we will highlight a special need for NFCC. Will you consider helping? March Grocery List for NFCC We have learned that our Food Pantry clients cook! Highly sought after and seldom donated items are ingredients such as cooking oil, sugar, and cornmeal. (Flour is another desirable commodity, but we get much more flour donated.) Another baking category you might not guess: canned milk, evaporated or condensed, and coconut milk. Would you consider adding a cooking ingredient item to your weekly grocery list and bring it to church? GENERAL FOOD PANTRY WORD TO THE WISE: Bigger is not usually better in the Pantry. If you give a large bag of sugar it must be broken down into 1 pound bags, using both plastic and time. If you give a 2 lb bag of sugar we can give it as is no plastic, no labor. If you give two ordinary size bottles of cooking oil two families benefit. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2019 Hi Everyone! Children, Youth, and Adults!
