the Beacon First United Methodist Church Marion, NC 013 Seeking to be a Lighthouse guiding people in Worship, Discipleship, and Christian Service. All Scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right. - 2Timothy 3:16 (NCV) The Bible, perhaps more than any other literary work, has been referenced by people in every generation since its canonization in the 4 th century. More than just stories for a good sermon, the Bible is a source of hope, encouragement, and instruction for every Christian. Still, for many of us, God s Word can be a complex book, difficult to understand, making application into our daily lives a real challenge. How does that work? is the theme of summer worship as we look at some of those perplexing passages of the Bible. The parables and passages that often confound and cause us to scratch our heads in wonder will be our collective focus. The aim is to discover how these verses fit into the Apostle Paul s understanding of how they teach us ways of living right. Granted, these passages can appear intimidating, but as we seek the Holy Spirit s guidance, these same scriptures have the potential to draw us close to God, deeper in our love and knowledge of God, the author of it all. Each week the message will be recorded in case you are away, but are curious to learn How does that work? As we enjoy these summer days in front of us, please know that I am praying for you and your family. I am praying that God will keep you safe in all your summer plans. My prayers also include that we, as an entire church, will develop an even deeper hunger for God s Word as we seek to know Him and as we seek to make Him known in our world. I ll look for you, -Pastor Kent IN THIS ISSUE A Word from Pastor Kent Page 1 Members in Action Page 2 June Calendar Page 2 Children and Youth Page 3 UMW News Page 4 New Library Books Page 4 Cupcake Battle Page 4 Memorials Page 5 June Birthdays Page 6 God s Favorite Word Jesus said, Come Follow Me. God is an inviting God. He invited Mary to birth his Son, the disciples to fish for men, the adulteress to start over, and Thomas to touch his wounds. God is the King who prepares the palace, sets the table, and invites his subjects to come in. In fact, it seems his favorite word is come. Come let us talk about these things. Thought your sins are like scarlet, they can be as white as snow. All you who are thirsty, come and drink. Come to me all, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest. God is a God who invites. God is a God who calls.

I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the calls, cards, wonderful food, and generous gifts and, most of all, the prayers and hugs. To Stephanie, Michelle, Nancy and Tony for all the rides for us. To my personal nurse, Mary, who took me and read all my reports and x-rays from the doctors. To Pastor Kent and Anita for the prayers which gave me such peace of mind that everything will be all right. This church (the congregation) is very precious to me and I know in my heart this is where God wants us to be. Christian blessings to all, Jane Kelly May 3, 2013 Dear Friends in Christ, Thank You! ~ for your generous donations to the Good Samaritan Clinic of McDowell County! We ve been in our new office for over a year now! Taking care of our patients is so much easier! Please, please come by and see what we do and, you will understand why! We re open Tues. evenings from 6-9 pm...nine doctors take turns donating their time each month, as does our office and medical staff. McDowell County came together for us, once again...we raised the money to buy an EKG machine for the clinic. This is just one of the many needs that the un-insured folks do not have access to. Please remember us in your prayers, and again, THANK YOU for your generous donations and continued support.! Jaime R. Stone and Beth Ross
