The Pillar of the Brecksville United Church of Christ 2 Pastor s Ponderings...on a New Year, and New Opportunities... Throughout this past year, I have once again been reminded of the remarkable compassion and dedication, talent and energy which is found - and displayed - throughout this community of faith. Time-aftertime, so many you put-forth exceptional effort to ensure that our message and ministries of Welcome and Love are carried forward. To all of you who have worked on Church Council, our various Ministry Teams, or individually to enhance the life and mission of BUCC, I offer a grateful Thank You! And to those of you who are new to this church, or have not recently taken an active role, I want to encourage you to consider joining-in on the action in this New Year. For many of us, the start of a New Year is a time of fresh beginnings and positive resolutions. Working together, we can build upon our church s past, and resolutely carry-forward our stated Mission of Loving, Serving, and Accepting All People with God s Life-Changing Power! This month, our Church Council and various Ministries Teams will be regrouping to gear-up for another year of activities and opportunities. These meeting are open to anyone who is interested, so please feel free to attend, participate, and find out more about the work of our congregation, and how you can be an active part of it. Like Jesus, [and because of Jesus] you and I definitely have Good News to share! And there are certainly people around us who are waiting to hear and experience some Good News in their lives today. So perhaps one mutual New Year s resolution we all might consider, is that we each put-forth a renewed effort to invite a friend or family member, neighbor or acquaintance to join us on our journey of faith; that we make it a personal goal to welcome others to worship and service the Holy One with us here at BUCC. Spreading Good News to our wider community takes the combined efforts of us all; and I believe that this coming year presents us an ideal time to do so. For while our world and society seem to be growing increasingly hostile and divisive, the stability, encouragement, and love that we find - and offer - within this Church Family can provide a welcome sanctuary.

The Pillar of the Brecksville United Church of Christ 3 Once again, I offer a heartfelt Thank You! to all of you who dedicate so much of your time and talents, resources and energy in carrying forward the important work of our Church s mission and ministry! With you in Christ s Service, Pastor Dave If you would like to have a pastoral visit in your home, or simply need to talk, please call Pastor Dave at the church office [440-526-4364] or at home [440-546-1193]. He will be glad to meet with you. Two Great Opportunities for Practical Learning: What are ADVANCE DIRECTIVES? All adults admitted to any hospital will be asked if they have Advance Directives. Mark Lehman, LISW (retired Hospital Social Worker) will present an overview of the 4 documents that make up Advance Directives. The documents are the Living Will/ Health Care Power of Attorney/Guardianship and Organ Donation. The presentation will be on Tuesday January 15 th from 7p-8p in Pilgrim Hall. UNDERSTANDING CARE AFTER A HOSPITAL ADMISSION Patients and families are provided an overwhelming amount of information on care in the community after a hospital stay. Mark Lehman, LISW (retired Hospital Social Worker) will present an overview of the various care options in the community, what is fitting for the patient and the how it is paid for. The presentation will be on Tuesday January 29 th from 7p-8p in Pilgrim Hall.

The Pillar of the Brecksville United Church of Christ 4 FROM THE MINISTRIES OF BUCC NEWS FROM OCWM The birth of Jesus may have been recently celebrated, but the needs of the community at large are still ongoing. To this end, BUCC members and friends have an opportunity to help alleviate hunger needs of less fortunate people. To this end, our next hunger meal will be served on January 6, 2019 at Iglesia Emmanuel. The menu will be familiar to those of us who have served in the past (mostaccioli, meatballs, salad, etc.). The usual sign-up board will be in the narthex for those who wish to participate to sign for the early shift (2:30 to 4 PM) or the late shift (4 to 6 PM). We plan on serving 30 to 40 meals. There is a need at the Jefferson School for students recently arrived in the U. S. The need is a simple one. English-arabic/arabic-english dictionaries are needed for students in the fourth grade to help them learn what to them is a new language. About four or five dictionaries would be sufficient. If people would be kind enough to provide one of these dictionaries (leave them in the church office), Bob Chandler will see that they reach these students. Thanks go to those among us who have been providing hats, mittens, scarves, etc. for children in the cold months. Our resident elf will make sure that these items get to the hunger centers for distribution when families receive donated food items.

The Pillar of the Brecksville United Church of Christ 5 NOTES AND ASIDES AN E-MAIL WAS RECEIVED from Sandra Rooney, asking us to wish BUCC members and friends best wishes and Merry Christmas. Sandra, for those who did not have the pleasure and privilege of knowing her, is a former longtime member, choir member and Council Moderator who moved to Arizona upon retiring from her duties with the National United Church of Christ office. She is still hiking, singing in her choir, assisting with her local church s food bank, and participating in a group addressing border issues. Her new E- mail address is: srooney1935@gmail.com and she can be reached at her new cell phone number 520-312-5204. We also send along our wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Our book discussion this month will be about The Last Mrs. Parrish, written by Liv Constantine. It's an intriguing story about a manipulative "Amber" who is tired of being a "nobody" and sets her sights on obtaining money and power by edging her way into a wealthy family's heart, getting their compassion by being deceitful and lying about her past. We will meet in the Parlor at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 7th. All are welcome to attend. It should be a lively discussion.

The Pillar of the Brecksville United Church of Christ 6 FLOWER MINISTRY Flowers are placed in the front of the church each Sunday to honor/celebrate your family/friends/events. We need your h elp to have this information to Jeannette, our office manager, before she prepares the Bulletin on Wednesdays. Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4. 1. Put your name on the 2019 flower chart hanging on the west wall just inside the door to the narthex. 2. Fill out the information form found in the pocket below the chart (now would be a good time). This information is very helpful to assure the right message is put into the Bulletin and to prevent any mix-ups on Sunday morning. 3. If you are making a dedication and providing your own flowers, please mark this on the form so the flower ministry knows. 4. This information form may be turned in to Joy Garapic. The flower ministry does not want to miss sharing your joy by not having the correct information. Thank you, Janet Renovetz FOOD PANTRY January - Canned Fruit & Vegetables
