Located on Yamaguchi island, Japan, the Museum is dedicated to those Japanese citizens who migrated to Hawaii. February 8, 1885, during the reign of King David Kalakaua, in agreement with Emperor Meiji of the Empire of Japan, 153 Japanese immigrants arrived in Hawaii as contract laborers for sugarcane and pineapple plantations. Junko is working with Kalimapau of HCCW on a Kūkaniloko Exhibit for their Museum. Importance of Kūkaniloko as a navigational training site here in the sacred uplands of līhu e, wahiawā, halemano is the focus of this Exhibit. In May 2007, Hawaiʻi s replica ancient voyaging canoe Hōkūle a visited this small island to honor the connection between Suō-Ōshima and Hawaiʻi. An extrememly important part of the Hōkūle a rigging was in need of replacement. Island resident, Mr. Yoshitsugu Fuji, carved and prepared this piece for the crew. Although Mr. Fuji has passed away, his piece has since been returned and is now on display in the Museum. Ōlelo Noʻeau...Mary Kawena Pukui...Hawaiian Proverbs #1368. Ka i a māewa i ke kai. Pua recently relocated from Wai anae, O ahu island for a teaching position on Kauai island. Unfortunately, it was the day of our first real winter storm and their visit was cancelled. With a very full schedule for their O ahu huaka i, we will wait for their next visit to our island. We were, however, able to give pa akai to their kumu who in turn shared with the haumana-mai kakou e pu pa akai. Page1
