People: We are drawn to worship by love beyond our knowing, by the secret and hidden wisdom of God. Leader: God comes among us and within each one, inviting us to be salty Christians. People: We are each important to the good work God seeks to accomplish with and through us. Leader: We are called to be lights in the world and to let our lights shine brightly. People: God expects us to reflect eternal truth and lead others to Christ s way. *Hymn UMH #64 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty *Unison Prayer Draw us, O God, into your wisdom that we may glimpse your purposes for us. Calm our fears, and lead us to deeper trust. Strengthen our faith that we may not fear to undertake whatever mission you have for us today. Grant us such compassion that we may open our hearts and hands to others who need the help we can provide. Amen. Responsive Scripture Reading Psalm 112:4- L: They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful and righteous. P: It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. L: For the righteous shall never be moved; they will be remembered for ever. P: They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, trusting in the Lord. L: When they see their adversaries, their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid. P: They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures for ever; their horn is exalted in honor. Time for God s Children
Choir Anthem The Church s One Foundation Pastoral Prayer Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Epistle Lesson 1 Corinthians 2:1-11 (NIV) And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God s power. We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. However as it is written: What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, And what no human mind has conceived - the things God has prepared for those who love him These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Hymn of Illumination #454 Open My Eyes, That I May See Gospel Lesson Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV) You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Sermon You Are the Salt of the Earth Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Dass

These seven parables were presented together because they possess an underlying continuity and unity. Jesus told these parables not merely to inform but to persuade, to convince, to move his hearers to action. He told these parables in order to help his audience come to grips with the practical will of God for their everyday lives.
