THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT The Service of the Word is also found on p. 38 in the front of the red hymnal. OPENING HYMN Delay Not! Delay Not 337 INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. P: Why are you downcast, O my soul? (from Psalm 42-43) C: Why so disturbed within me? P: Put your hope in God, C: for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin and take away my guilt. P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. 3
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. OH, TASTE AND SEE PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty God, you see that we have no power to defend ourselves. Guard and keep us both outwardly and inwardly from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 4
ANTHEM (10:30) I Want to Walk As a Child of the Light arr. William Brusick THE WORD FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 26:8-15 Jerusalem rejects Jeremiah as the Lord's prophet, yet Jeremiah faithfully relays the Lord's message to this people. 8 But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy in the LORD s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted? And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD. 10 When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the LORD and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD s house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears! 12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard. 13 Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing. 5
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 42-43 As the deer pants for streams of water,* so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.* Where can I go and meet with God? Why are you downcast, O my soul?* Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,* for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Refrain Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me;* let them bring me to the place where you dwell. Then will I go to the altar of God, my joy and my delight.* I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 6
SECOND LESSON Philippians 3:17-4:1 We citizens of heaven live much differently than the enemies of Christ, whose god is their stomach, whose glory is in their shame. 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. 4 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! VERSE OF THE DAY Philippians 2:8 P: Jesus humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. GOSPEL Luke 13:31-35 Jesus verbalizes his love for the rebellious city of Jerusalem, for whom he would sacrifice his life. 31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you. 32 He replied, Go tell that fox, I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal. 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 7
HYMN OF THE DAY Lord, You I Love with All My Heart 434 SERMON Philippians 3:17-4:1 Live As a Citizen of Heaven APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANK OFFERING Please take a moment to sign the Friendship Register. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord Jesus, you are the author and perfecter of our faith. Obeying your Father s will, you endured the cross and scorned its shame. Now you sit at the right hand of the throne of God, governing all things. Lord, we confess that it was for us and for our salvation that you came to this world to suffer and to die. You bore our guilt. You endured our punishment. You experienced the wrath of God in our place. For your unselfish sacrifice on our behalf, help us show our gratitude to you in everything we think, say, and do. As we walk through life, keep us from becoming entangled by sin. Remove all obstacles and stumbling blocks, and keep us from falling or going astray. Help us run with perseverance the race that you have marked out for us. When that way involves pain, suffering, or persecution, help us view these things as evidence of your loving discipline intended to draw us ever closer to you. 8
Special prayers and intercessions may follow. P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. P: Hold before us the example of those who have gone before, bearing the cross for you. As you led them, so lead us. As you strengthened them, so strengthen us. Keep our eyes fixed on you, for then we shall surely arrive safely at the heavenly home you have prepared for us Hear us for your mercy s sake. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HYMN I m But a Stranger Here 417 PRAYER P: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 9
BLESSING P: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN Jerusalem, the Golden 728 10
