Mark your calendars! Fall should be in the air even though it has been feeling like summer. The colors of the season are starting to show. I love the sights and smells of Autumn and wish it would last longer. Summer, Fall, Spring then Summer would be great with me. As the month of November quickly approaches, we are preparing to celebrate our parish Mass of Remembrance. This year, All Saints Day is a Holy day of Obligation and is on Wednesday, November 1 st and there will be three masses. The normal daily masses at 8:00 AM in St. Wendelin Church and 9:00 AM in St. Albert the Great Church. There will also be a 7:00 PM in St. Albert the Great Church. The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) will be celebrated with a Mass of Remembrance Thursday, November 2 nd at 6:30 PM in St. Basil Church. Let our actions speak louder than our words! Last weekend I ended my homily by sharing a phrase that was given to me by a former spiritual director. A number of parishioners asked me for a copy so I am sharing it with you here. As I spoke about how important it is make sure our actions speak louder than our words, (something I myself struggle with at times), I remembered the spiritual director telling me to try and always maintain good and positive thoughts because everything progresses from there. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS: they become words. WATCH YOUR WORDS: they become actions. WATCH YOUR ACTIONS: they become habits. WATCH YOUR HABITS: they become character. WATCH YOUR CHARACTER: it becomes your destiny. Frank Outlaw Fr. Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome Ethan Jeffrey Schaffner all children who were baptized into our faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents If you need to prepare for the baptism of your infant, and you have not had the preparation seminar, please contact Deacon Mike at (412) 884-7744, extension 206 to schedule a time. Members of our local K of C Gilmary Council were busy serving the food and helping to make the dinner a great success. Holy Apostles Ladies of Charity RESPECTING AND PRAYING FOR LIFE Pet Blessing On October 4 th (the feast of St. Francis of Assisi), Fr. Steve blessed the pets of our parish on St. Albert s grounds. A great turnout of dogs, plus a cat, a ferret and a few guinea pigs were present for the blessing. Attendees also received medals and prayer cards. All the pets (and most of the adults!) were well-behaved and enjoyed mingling with each other. Even Smokey made his annual appearance and surveyed his kingdom while in the arms of Fr. Tom Burke. More pictures of both events on the website. A vigil will be held in front of Planned Parenthood, 933 Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh Monday, October 16 from 11am to 3pm. Anytime that you can attend within those times will help defend the unborn. If those times are not convenient you can attend the Forty Day for Life vigil at anytime until November 5th from 7am to 7pm. There will always be a shift manager there at this prayerful vigil. PRAYERS FOR THOSE WHO CHOSE LIFE Roselia Program and Support Services For more than a century, Catholic Charities has steadfastly maintained its commitment to protecting human life through its outreach to low income, homeless women, and those at risk of homelessness, facing unplanned pregnancies alone. Catholic Charities leases several apartments in secure buildings to provide a safe and comfortable home for these women and their infants. A caseworker meets with residents regularly to provide guidance and track progress on individualized service plans - which include life-skills training, jobreadiness skills, and pregnancy and parenting education and counseling. THE DEACON S CORNER We have now had about two months of Nar-Anon meetings, and they continue on Mondays at 6:30 pm in the St. Albert the Great Chapel. But there remains a misconception of what they are about. Many continue to mistakenly believe this is a NA meeting, addressing addicts and their recovery. It is not. While we support NA and what they provide for addicts, Nar -Anon is about those who currently have an addict in their life and are suffering from the chaos and debilitating effects of living with addiction. It is a program to deal with the damage done to the family and friends of the addict, through the experience of others, and by connecting with their God. This is a program. Nar- Anon is not a onetime event. Those living with and needing help and recovery in their life with an addict are encouraged to come and participate in the program offered, and come back as often as needed. Any question, give Deacon Mike a call at 412-884-7744 x 206. God Bless. Invite someone to Mass next weekend! Cut out the invitation below and give it to someone special. To: From: This is a personal and heartfelt invitation from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU! During a recent check-up, my doctor (he s Catholic) and I were talking about our kids. He said he heard a priest offer this advice: Sometimes it is better if we tell Jesus about our kids, rather than tell our kids about Jesus. We often ask for things for our kids, but do we take the time to tell Jesus about them, their wants and their desires, their strengths and weaknesses. I know if I talk with people about my kids (and now my grandkids), out comes the phones with pictures. We describe how they are doing, and what they are trying to achieve. How they are doing in school or at their job. We share. We typically just ask and move on in our conversations with Jesus. In our relationship with Jesus, we really need to share to build that one-on-one relationship with Him. Now here are a couple things that may help in this area. First be honest with Jesus. It is okay to be angry, upset or frustrated. Jesus understands. Ask Jesus to help and then share what you and your child are going through. When we are inviting Jesus into our problems we must cooperate with His grace. It will strengthen our relationship. This is a hard one. Make sure that we are not part of the problem. Ask Jesus to open our eyes to any actions we may be contributing to the situation. Look to fix these issues first. (Don t be afraid to use the confessional.) I often think of these new dog leashes that you can let out longer and longer. With our kids we often must let the leash out a little longer, at times, to allow them to make small mistakes and learn without damaging themselves. Very hard to balance this in today s world. Make sure that what we are asking for our child is something that child really wants and needs and we are not pushing our desires on them. For example: is this the path in life that they want, or is this something we always wanted. When we ask Jesus s help, we must trust Him to make the best decision for all involved, even if we do not always agree or understand. Make a list of what you ask for, so you can say thanks as Jesus answers your prayers. He will answer. The cost is $30.00. We will start to sell them after all Masses at all the Churches, on the weekends F Grace and peace to you in Christ Jesus our Lord! God is doing so many beautiful things and I am so grateful to be getting to know the community more and more each week. This week I was reminded of the power and presence of evil. My heart broke for the families who lost loved ones and for all who were victims of the shooting in Las Vegas. The problem of evil has always been on the hearts and minds of believers and I would imagine it is a question for most people. What is evil and where does it come from? As Thomas Aquinas defines it, evil is a privation of a good. It is some good that is lacking in a particular thing or person. We must remember that everything God made is good, and in fact all created things are good. It was original sin and subsequently all of our sins there after that bring evil into the world. As a privation, evil is nothing or a non-thing; of course, this is impossible to fully grasp because we cannot comprehend something that is not. An analogy would be dark and light. Darkness is not a thing, but a lack of a thing, and specifically a lack of light. Similarly, evil is not a thing, but a lack of a thing, namely goodness. Thus, God did not make evil! Humanity brought is about by exorcising our free will. Out of all creation, only humanity (the angels have already chosen) has the power to choose good or evil; God s will or our own. When we make our will God s will, then creation stays in line with truth, beauty and goodness, but when we decided to do our own will and forget what God has, then we create a lack of good, or deviate from the truth/good and therefore allow evil into creation. If you hate evil and tend to get angry when you see things like the shooting that took place, know that you are not alone! Evil should make us angry! St. Paul says to hate what is evil and cling to what is good. That being said, we must not hold onto our anger or direct it in the wrong way. We must allow it to move us to deeper holiness because each of us has some evil within us some lack of perfection and we all know it. Our anger should motivate us to strive for greater perfection in Christ! Never let anger settle on a person, especially yourself! Only be angry with the evil, and let your anger abate as you refocus on Christ! In Christ, Fr. Levi

CCD NEWS CORNER Children s Corner (young & old) CCD Registrations are now closed. Last day to register your child was October 8th. We are so pleased with the number of returning families/students. 90% of last year's families returned this year and we have 243 children at this time. Many families have taken advantage of our collaboration with Holy Angels for evening CCD classes.
