October 30, 2016 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Reflection on Readings WIS 11:22 12:2; PS 145: 1-2, 8-11, 13-14; 2 THES 1:11 2:2; LK 19: 1-10 In the Gospel Reading from St. Luke we hear the story of the tax collector Zacchaeus and his desire to see and perhaps meet Jesus. The image of Zacchaeus up in that sycamore tree is one that many of us may recall from our childhood, and hearing it because it is a vivid impression, and one that even as we get older may may trigger a memory. The name Zacchaeus means pure one, but he certainly was not pure. We learn from his own confession how he has overcharged and cheated people in his tax collection duties. However, for all his faults and shortcomings Zacchaeus seeks purity, and he understands that Jesus is a way to achieve that. It is interesting to note that Zacchaeus climbs a tree to see Jesus better. That sounds like something a child might do, and that fulfills in a small way an instruction Jesus gives to each of us, Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus follows that remark my immediately reminding us that we must become humble like children. That is a cue for us to recall importance of humility when it comes to being a good steward, but thanks to the lesson of Zacchaeus we learn even more about how to seek stewardship. Like the tax collector we need to make an effort to seek Jesus; like him we must be humble; we must welcome Jesus into our homes and into our hearts; and finally we need to receive him joyfully. Formed November Feature: Advent The tradition of the Advent Wreath is meant to prepare our hearts for Christmas. It represents the long period of time when people lived in spiritual darkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the Light of the world. As a new candle is lit each week, the light grows, overcoming the darkness. Of course, the symbolism doesn t end there as Jesus calls us to be the light of the world [Matthew 5:14]. FORMED offers many resources this month, including a 4-week study on Advent, for your parishioners to prepare their hearts for Christmas and be the light of the world. Also included are a movie on Pius XII Under the Roman Sky and a book on Joan of Arc. Vocations Bishop Sheridan and the Serra Club will host a Luncheon on Thursday, December 1st for those interested in learning more about the ministry of promoting, supporting and affirming vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The event will be held at St. Mary s Cathedral, 22 W Kiowa, following the 12:10pm Mass. If you would like to attend, please RSVP with your name, address, email and phone to SerraCOSprings@dioCS.net or call 719-375-5486, by November 7, 2016. Ministry Spotlight Library Ministry St. Gabriel s Library strives to provide resources for all ages that support our Catholic faith. We have books, DVDs, CDs, and games for children, teens, and adults, as well as resources for homeschooling families and Religious Education teachers. Items check out for two weeks using the self check-out instructions on the bulletin board. Returned items go in the Return basket on the blue bookshelf by the door. The library is located in the St. Kateri room and is open whenever the building is open (unless there is a class in session). We plan a yearly Open House and used book give-away. This year s mid-september give-away was a great success! Most of the books and videos found new homes and your generous donations will be used to purchase new DVDs. The Library also accepts donations of appropriate books, DVDs and CDs. Tax receipts are available by contacting Gail Sohns at gailsohns@gmail.com or by phone at 719-590-7724. Weekly faith topic All Saints Paul Turner In designating one day on our calendar for all the saints, the church chooses a time to honor our heroes the men and women whose example we admire. Coming near the end of the church year, the solemnity of All Saints invites us into the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. An early tradition placed the festival on May 13. According to one story, Pope Boniface IV (himself a saint) began the celebration in Rome. On that date in 609 he dedicated a very old building as a new church. The Pantheon had been built to honor all the pagan gods, but Boniface rededicated the building as a Christian church in the seventh century. He brought the relics of the martyrs from the catacombs to this famous public place of worship. The parade of relics changed the Pantheon from a place for worship of all the pagan gods to a place that honored Mary and all the Christian saints and in turn the one Christian God. Eventually the idea of a feast of all saints was transferred to Nov. 1, near the end of the church year. The church honors many saints with a day of their own on the general liturgical calendar, but there are many more saints than those. Since Vatican II, the number of men and women canonized as saints has increased considerably. Although we do not celebrate all their names on specific dates in all our churches throughout the year, we do gather them as one on this day. Secular tradition has turned the eve of All Saints into a kind of anti-festival, a night when heroes of the underworld take command. The Mass for All Saints Day always replaces the one for ordinary time, even when it falls on a Sunday. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
