Many of us will be heading out to celebrations with family or friends. Be safe! Others of us will watch festivities on Television or perhaps ignore the whole thing and just get an early night s rest. Wherever the new year takes you, try to remember that January 1 st is a Holy Day of Obligation. Of course it is. It is the Holy Day of Mary, Mother of God, and it is the Church s World Day of Peace. We will offer a Vigil Mass on December 31 st, New Year s Eve at 5:30pm here in Church. New Year s Day, January 1 st, we will have our traditional 8:45am Mass time. See what you can do and perhaps check out other local Mass times if ours are not as convenient for you. The new year also brings a great time to re-evaluate life and think about what we might like to do better in the new year. How could we improve our spiritual life this coming year? One good answer is to pray more. Rare is the situation where we would have been better served had we prayed less. Indeed a spiritual maxim I remind myself of again and again is Pray more, not less. What are some basic boundaries for the spiritual life and listening to God? If you are reading this article then chances are you are coming to Mass on a regular basis. Awesome! The Mass provides supernatural graces to keep us within God s influence. How about outside of Mass? The Mass is described by the Church as the source and summit of our spiritual life. This means that the Mass is the beginning and the end of our spiritual life each week, but there is also all the in-between of the week that God wishes to fill too! How do we do that? Taking private time with God, preferably prayer sitting still or out walking, is preferable to driving or doing some other work. Scripture is optimal. Scripture remains God s living word and provides the best fodder for spiritual chewing on of what God might be saying to us. Some phone apps are particularly helpful. I like to listen to PAYG, Pray as you go, a free Jesuit audio reflection on the daily Mass readings. Whatever enters our minds in prayer needs to be sifted through. Some is from us, some is from God and some is from darker realms. We call this the discernment of spirits. Discerning what might be from God and what is not, is important for our intimacy. We can all misread what we think is God. Here are some key pointers. God will never condone sin. So if ever we feel challenged to tackle some area of our life that is fallen or full of shadows, God is definitely at least in union with that thought. God does this with love. It is never God s intention that his challenges drive us away from him. We tackle things with God, he is not our opponent. Continued
December 29 & 30, 2018 PAGE 3 It is also true that God will never speak contrary to the Church. The two are one voice. Any truth of the Church is revealed by God. Our call is always to move into union with the Church. If we are hearing anything contrary to the Church, it s not God. What is often needed here is a bit of compassion toward ourselves for thinking what we think, some patience, and some humility. God is calling us to think differently in these circumstances. It takes time, study and a willing, humble and obedient heart. God is calling us to a truer love, often more challenging in some way. Lastly, he is the God of reconciliation. The Cross is the height of reconciliation. Our life too finds its answers here. All that leads to peace, justice, reconciliation, forgiveness and generosity, always in union with truth, is most likely at least in union with God s desires. This encompasses marriage, family, friendship, the workplace and the world. I was told at my ordination to model my life on the mystery of the Lord s Cross, this is wisdom for everyone. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg Mass Cancelations and School Closings As a general policy, we will follow the public school decisions on school closings. If school is canceled, there will be no Mass or Prayer Service that day. Please listen to one of the Green Bay radio or TV stations for closing announcements when the weather is severe. Religious Education News Adam Horn-R.E. Director The Week Ahead: January 2 There will be no Religious Education classes until January 23. Enjoy the break! Have a Happy New Year! Feast of the Holy Family See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. (JOHN 3:1) During this season of giving, let us remember that the most important gift we have received-being children of God. As God s children, it s important that we express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children and other famiy members and friends that you love them, frequently. Sometimes individuals feel uncomfortable around people with disabilities, so in January we are partnering with Aspiro to bring client s to school to work beside our K - 4th grade students in a variety of ways through crafts, gym games and music. Our 5-8th grade students will be bowling with clients at Riviera Lanes. We are asking for monetary donations to help offset the cost of the bussing and materials to make crafts. Please send to the office marked ASPIRO. Thank you for your support as we encourage this type of interaction with our students.
