GATHERING MUSIC Karen Wojahn, organist WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Natalie & Teigen Burmeister ADVENT SONG Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah (vs. 1) ELW #240 ADVENT PRAYER We praise you, O God for this wreath that helps us to prepare for Christ s coming. As we light the first candle on this wreath, wake us up, that we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes with all the saints and angels. Enlighten us with your grace, and prepare our hearts to welcome him with joy. Grant this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen.

OPENING HYMN Prepare the Royal Highway (vss. 1, 3, 4) ELW #264 CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS L: With humility we confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. L: God of promise and hope, C: So often we fall short, failing to be all that you have created us to be. We pester you with questions, Why? and Where are you? We lack faith in your promises of deliverance and hope. Forgive us for all that we have done to harm you, others, and ourselves. Walk with us in the time of Advent, so that through our journey we may be made clean. L: Our holy Lord God knows we are weak, frail creatures. Yet God loves us and refuses to give up on us. Because of God s persistence we are made new again and again. Receive today the entire forgiveness of all your sins. Walk with God on your human journey, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY God, we are sometimes impatient for you to act according to your vision for the earth. Give us wisdom to see your will unfolding, and boldness to be a part of your solution. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. CHILDREN S SERMON Pastor Adam READING Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4; 3:3b-6, 17-19a Pew Bible p. 762 The Word of the Lord/ Thanks be to God. OFFERING We give, because God gives to us! Our ministries share God s love. RESPONSE He Came Down That We May Have Love (vs. 1) ELW #253 PRAYER We bring you these gifts, loving God, though at times our efforts feel woefully deficient for the needs in our midst. Take these signs of compassion and multiply them for your good purposes, even as you continue to use our gifts, our time and all that we have in service to your kingdom s glory. In Jesus name. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION Words of Institution Lord s Prayer ELW p. 112 Songs during Distribution: ELW #471, #614 BENEDICTION CLOSING HYMN Blessing and Honor (vs.1&4) ELW #854 DISMISSAL POSTLUDE Go in Peace, Serve the Lord. We will! Thanks be to God! ++++++++++++++++ WELCOME to worship at American Lutheran! In the scripture reading today, the people of Israel have been exiled, and their pain runs deep. They cry to God and fear God is not listening. It seems all they see is destruction and violence. Habakkuk cannot bear the injustice he sees in the world, with seemingly no relief in sight. But despite his despair, Habakkuk declares, I will rejoice in the Lord. During worship, Holy Communion is served to all who believe in the presence of Christ in the bread and wine given to us for the forgiveness of sins. Grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available. Children may come forward for a blessing.
