On Sunday, July 1, following worship, our Annual Conference delegate, Carol Goss, will be available for questions on business items coming up this year. Cincinnati Here We Come! On Sunday morning, July 8, as our larger church family in Cincinnati, OH wraps up morning worship at Annual Conference, we will watch the webcast in the Gathering Room. The closing service will feature Leonard Sweet, E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism at Drew University, Madison, N.J., and a Visiting Distinguished Professor at George Fox University, Portland, Ore. Also a bestselling author and popular preacher, he is known for bridging the worlds of faith, academia, and popular culture. He produces a podcast called Napkin Scribbles, has written for sermons.com for many years, and hosts his own preaching website called PreachTheStory.com. His books, among others, include Soul Tsunami, Aqua Church, Jesus Manifesto and Jesus: A Theography co-written with Frank Viola. We will project the Annual Conference worship service beginning at 11:00 a.m. and be part of a country-wide worship service. Their service will begin with announcements at 8:30 a.m. Viewers are able to pause or rewind the live stream at any point. Sunday morning worship at Annual Conference is always an uplifting and powerful service accompanied by wonderful music and meaningful messages. Page 7 Around Our District T h e H er a ld DISTRICT RESOURCE CENTER TO BE CLOSED FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE The District Resource Center will be closed for Annual Conference beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 29, and re-opening on Monday, July 9, at 9 a.m. David K. Shumate and Tabitha Hartman Rudy will be participating in the meetings of the Council of District Executives and the Annual Conference. SONG AND STORY FEST On Earth Peace will be co-sponsoring the upcoming Song and Story Fest. This event is a unique family camp featuring Brethren musicians and storytellers in Ohio. The Swing State Song & Story Fest: Becoming God s Beloved Community will run from July 8 to July 14 and will be held at Inspiration Hills Camp in northern Ohio. This is the 22 nd summer in a row for these Song and Story Fests and our third visit to Inspiration Hills, the Church of the Brethren camp for northern Ohio. The event will begin Sunday evening, July 8, with supper at 5:00 pm, an opening campfire, and some music and dancing. The Fest will close Saturday morning, July 14, after breakfast, worship, & hugs. PRACTICE OF MINISTRY DAY The 2018 Practice of Ministry Day will be Saturday, August 4, 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Stone Church of the Brethren, 2162 Forest Avenue, Buena Vista, VA 24416-2734. The focus this year is Communication with Pastor and Parish. Marty Barlow, John Jantzi, Tabitha Rudy and David Shumate will be presenters on subjects such as Anger Management, Social Media, and Politics and the Church. CEU credit is available for ordained ministers. WORLD HUNGER AUCTION The World Hunger Auction will be held on Saturday, August 11, starting at 9:30 a.m. This is the culmination to our year-long fund-raising activities, the World Hunger Auction, is held each August at Antioch Church of the Brethren, 2996 Callaway Road, near Rocky Mount, VA. The auction includes the sale of crafts, quilts, toys, produce, baked and canned goods, special services and much more. Come early for the best selection. Let the highest bidder win, for doing what we can opens the door for God to do much more. "OPEN ARMS, OPEN DOORS" DISABILITIES MINISTRY EVENT The Virlina Disabilities Ministry Committee s focus has been expanded to include persons of all age groups and abilities. Our goal is: To include everyone who is other abled in the life, worship and activities in all Church of the Brethren Congregations in Virlina District. To do so, we are offering a time to come together for a needs survey, through round table sharing with each other. We hope that this will give you a voice to share your needs. It will also assist us to develop a plan as we work to meet the needs of our Virlina members and congregations. This conversation will take place at the Summerdean Church of the Brethren in Roanoke, VA on September 8, from 1-3 p.m. Please pre-register by August 24. DISASTER RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN ST. THOMAS - FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE Brethren Disaster Ministries is sponsoring several weeks of clean-up help in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands). Volunteers can sign up for one or more weeks during the period of September 9-22. The Disaster Response Committee of the Virlina District will provide a total of $750.00 to help with airfare to and from St. Thomas if going during this time period. There is a limit to $150.00 per person. The committee may decide at a later time to extend this same aid to trips scheduled in 2019. Please do not hesitate to contact us about this opportunity!!
