Welcome to the Parish of St Martin de Porres in Wakefield. The Parish was formed in 2008 as the result of the Diocesan reorganisation of the Parishes of St Austin s and English Martyrs into one new Parish. Now the churches combine to provide a vibrant and welcoming faith community. St Austin s Catholic Church Wentworth Terrace English Martyrs Catholic Church Dewsbury Road This Parish Directory has been created to help publicise more widely the great range and variety of activities that take place in our Parish. Perhaps you will find something of interest to you or someone you know. You may have a skill set that we do not know about, and could bring something new to the Parish. Parish Priest: Mgr David Canon Smith Mgr David Canon Smith was born in Goole and became our Parish Priest in February 2016. He was previously at St Mary s in Halifax where he was Parish Priest for 16 years. Before that he was Parish Priest in Knottingley and curate in Halifax and Brighouse. He trained for the priesthood at Valladolid in Spain and was ordained a priest in 1987. Assistant Priest: Fr Sean Crawley Fr Sean Crawley was born in Leeds. He joined us from the Parish of St John Mary Vianney in North Leeds, in September 2017, where he had been Curate for two years. He trained for 7 years for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome and before that at the Royal English College in Valladolid, and was ordained to the sacred priesthood on 25 July 2015.

Weekend Mass Times: Worship Saturday - 6.15 pm Vigil Mass at St Austin s - with organ, hymns and sung Mass parts. Sunday - 8.15 am at St Austin's - with instruments, hymns and sung Mass parts. Sunday - 9.30 am at English Martyrs - a family Mass and a Children's Liturgy, with instruments, hymns and sung Mass parts. Sunday - 11.00 am at St Austin's - a traditional Mass with organ and St Austin's Choir. There is also a Children's Liturgy. Sunday - 3.30 pm at St Austin's - Mass in Polish Sunday - 6.00 pm at St Austin's - with organ, hymns and sung Mass parts. Weekday Mass Times: St Austin's Church: 9.30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. 12 noon on Thursdays. There is a Latin Mass on the 1 st Friday of the month at 7.30pm. English Martyrs Church: 12 noon on Tuesdays and Fridays. Exposition: Weekday Masses are usually preceded by half an hour of reflection and meditation before the Blessed Sacrament. There is also Exposition on Saturday at St Austin s Church between10.00am and 11.00am. **Please check the weekly bulletin for possible changes to Mass times** Novena at St Austin s Church: Monday 7.00 pm Day of Adoration at St Austin s Church: First Thursday of the month (except January) 10.00 am to 4.00 pm; (10.00 am morning prayer, 11.25 am Rosary, Noon Mass followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 2.15 pm Rosary, 3.00 pm Divine Mercy Chaplet and 3.40 pm Evening Prayer). First Saturdays Devotion at St Austin s Church: Act of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rosary will be recited during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at 10.00 am. Mass of the day will be offered for this intention. Sacrament of Reconciliation: St Austin s Church Saturday 10.00am - 11.00am and 5.15pm - 5.45pm. First Friday of the Month at 7.00pm before the Latin Mass at 7.30pm. English Martyrs Church Sunday 9.00am. If you are in hospital. If, during the course of your stay in hospital, you have not seen the Chaplain and wish to do so, please ask the ward sister to contact him directly. Liturgical Music in our Parish St Austin s Church: Music for the Vigil Mass on Saturday 6.15pm The singing is led by Irene de Tute on the organ with support from a guitarist; the congregation are encouraged to join in the whole liturgy. We are always happy to welcome new people, so if you can sing or play a musical instrument, come along and join us. We would love to see you. The choir is a mixed, mainly adult choir. Singing a wide range of musical styles; the choir s repertoire covers music from the last thousand years. Liturgical music includes plainchant Masses, polyphonic Masses and modern English settings. Meetings alternate between St Austin s and English Martyrs Parish Centres. The meetings are usually held on a Thursday evening between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. These are open meetings and everyone is welcome to come along and participate. Items to be considered for inclusion on the agenda should be forwarded to Mgr Smith in advance of the meetings, which are advertised in the Parish Bulletin. Parish Social Life and Community Building Listed below are our Parish Groups and Meetings. Everyone is welcome to come along and participate. Catholic Clothing Build Meeting: 2 nd Wednesday of the month 1.30pm 4.00pm at St Austin s Parish Centre. We aim is to provide warm and useful clothing for people who cannot provide it for themselves. Approaches are welcome from individuals or agencies who work with people in need. Come along and join us. English Martyrs Music Group The Group uses music and singing to support the congregation in worship at the 9.30am Sunday Mass and other celebrations and ceremonies throughout the year. We play a range of musical styles to suit the event. Instrumentalists or singers of any age or experience are welcome. The café and licensed bar is open before the film and again at the interval. Film Club has the added benefit of attracting people from outside our parish community who feel welcome. There is no charge but donations are appreciated to support the Parish Centre and to cover the licensing costs. Everyone is very welcome. Meeting: First Wednesday of the month in St Austin's Parish Centre. Doors open at 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start and we usually finish about 9.30 pm. Intercessory Praise Group Meeting: Wednesday 6.30pm 7.30pm at English Martyrs Parish Centre. Our group meets to devote an hour each week to offer prayer and praise for our Priests and parishioners, asking Our Lord for His blessing for each one of us. We usually present two performances each year. Our programme is varied and includes musicals, pantomimes, variety shows and plays. We have adult and youth (7yrs +) members and encourage everyone to be involved on stage and behind the scenes. We also present Murder Mystery evenings for fund raising events. Church Cleaning Teams Teams of parishioners come together to clean, dust and vacuum our churches regularly. This is a very important and necessary job and many hands make light work. If you would like to help please contact one of the people listed below: St Austin s: Friday or Saturday. There are 7 teams with 2 or 3 people in each team. Each group is on a rota to clean the church once every seven weeks, at a time arranged to suit the team. Eucharistic Ministers Eucharistic Ministers help the Priest to distribute Holy Communion during Mass and can also take Communion to the sick and the housebound. They are also able to conduct Eucharistic Services in the absence of a Priest. Formation and Study Courses At various times during the year courses and meetings are organised, to which you are very welcome to attend. These are generally advertised in the weekly Parish Bulletin and on the church notice boards. Below you will find a list of sessions which normally take place during the course of the year. This will usually include a home visit. Baptism dates will be booked at the course. To book a place on the course speak to one of the Priests after Sunday Mass. Becoming a Catholic Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) This is designed for adults who are considering whether the Catholic Faith is the way forward for them, and have not yet taken the step of being received into the Church. The programme is based around faith sharing, the scriptures and prayer. It starts in October and prepares candidates for confirmation and reception into the church during the Easter Vigil Mass the following Easter. Bible Study Reflections Led by Mgr Smith and Fr Crawley during Lent and Advent. Alpha Courses Alpha is a parish based course for evangelisation. It provides a common expression of proclamation, service and witness. It introduces people to the person of Jesus Christ and helps them develop a personal relationship with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit, in the midst of His Church. It is based on welcome, hospitality and sharing in open conversation and prayer. Alpha Courses meet in either St Austin s Parish Centre or English Martyrs Parish Centres on Thursday evenings between 7.00pm and 9.00pm and are advertised in the Parish Bulletin when they run. Mission and Outreach The Wednesday Word School and Parish Editions First piloted in St Austin s Catholic Primary School in 2006, The Wednesday Word is a simple mid-week habit of prayer and reflection on the Word of God for parishioners and Catholic families. Linked to the celebration of Sunday Mass, this is a way to share the Gospel and the teaching of the Catholic Church, rooting the partnership between home, school and parish in the Word of God. The children s version is distributed through our Primary Schools and the Parish version is available every week in the Narthex of both churches. Copies of the children s version are available each week in the Narthex of both churches for those children who do not attend one of our Catholic Primary Schools. Holy Communion for the sick and the housebound If you, or someone you know, is sick or housebound, arrangements can be made for Holy Communion to be brought on a regular basis by a Priest or one of our Eucharistic Ministers. Contact Mgr Smith or Fr Crawley St Austin s Choir Along with Liturgical music in the Parish, the Choir perform recitals, taking the Catholic faith and tradition to a much wider audience. They have sung at St Anne s Cathedral in Leeds, and in recent years, the choir has sung the Vigil Mass at St Peter s Basilica in Rome and performed a recital at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Locally they have sung at Temple Newsam for the Early Music Festival and have given recitals at Chantry Chapel. They also sing at the traditional Latin Mass for the Richard of York society, who celebrate his anniversary annually. The Choir is also available to sing at weddings and funerals by prior arrangement. The church will consider an outstanding keyboard player who may wish to learn to play the organ. The John Cuttell Organ Scholarship has a twofold purpose: To provide the scholar with experience of traditional Christian liturgical music through practice and observation as part of a thriving community To provide assistance to the Director of Music (Patrick Ganley) and Assistant Director of Music (Maria Willis) in accommodating the music requirements of the Church s Liturgy and the general work of the St Austin s Choir.
