In the verses before today s Gospel, Jesus has just chosen his twelve apostles and is coming down the mountain with them. Accompanying them is a large crowd. The people are all jostling to get close to Jesus because they have heard of his miraculous powers. Some have already been cured of unclean spirits and diseases and the rest want to touch him and be healed. Never has there been a more captive audience. It is the perfect setting for one of Jesus most often-quoted and charismatic sermons.
