The Grand Strand Hibernian Newsletter Friendship Christian Charity Unity Joseph J McGarry Division 1 March April, 2017 Saint Patrick s Breastplate Prayer I arise today through God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to see before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me, God's host to secure me against snares of devils, against temptations and vices, against inclinations of nature, against everyone who shall wish me ill, far and near, alone and in a crowd... Christ, be with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit, Christ where I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Christ. May your salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

2017 Board of Officers Paul Jenkins, President Tom Kinnally, VP Don Mayer, Sentinel Sean Nolan, Treasurer Jim O Connor, Financial Secretary Charlie Meginley Standing Committee Kevin Black, Recording Secretary Jim McGarry, Marshall Bill Toomey, Immediate Past President Executive Committee The Executive Committee is composed of the Officers, Committee Chairmen and Past Presidents. Also, all members are welcome to attend the Executive Meeting which is held at 6:30 pm, prior to the general membership meeting.

Presidents Message Before writing this first Presidents Message I thought It wise to read over past messages from my predecessors, Marty Flynn and Bill Toomey. Both wrote terrific messages full of encouragement about our McGarry Division s many fundraising programs, notably the Golf Outing and the Irish Show, most recently, Seamus Kennedy. It s heartening to me to see these events unfold with so much behind-the-scenes effort by our membership. While the golfers are out on the course, for example, they don t see the 15 or so Hibernian Brothers and Sisters back at the clubhouse preparing for the post tournament activities. And those sitting and enjoying the show by Seamus Kennedy have not seen the re-arrangement of the ballroom the previous day or the work on the day after to put it back together, or the efforts to put the concessions into proper form. Seeing 25 to 30 of our Brothers working together behind the scenes is really what our motto of Friendship, Christian Charity, and Unity is about. My sincere thanks to Bill Toomey for his dedication and perseverance in organizing the recent Seamus Kennedy show. He very calmly and professionally made it all happen. Great job Bill! And thanks as well are due to Bill Frank and Don Dunphy who have organized a team of Brothers to join them in putting on a record setting AOH 2017 Golf Outing at Wild Wing Golf Plantation on June 17. And to Tom Kinnally who in May will kick off the McGarry Division s Project St. Patrick fundraising efforts raising much needed funds for our diocese s Seminarians. And thanks as well to Glen Wolvertown, who recently transferred to our Division from New Jersey, who has stepped up to help organize our Hibernian Picnic in the Fall. So, it seems appropriate writing in March, during Irish Heritage Month, that we celebrate our Irish ancestors and their struggles to emigrate to America by our pride in being Hibernians, and being Irish! Humbly In our Motto, Paul Jenkins

The Membership Chairman's Corner. To all AOH members our great Holiday is up on us once more which we will celebrate on 3 / 11 / 2017 in North Myrtle Beach. Please do get out and March in the Parade and support your Faith and Heritage and also we should be proud of the great Organization that we belong to. the AOH. Once again as has been the custom for many Years we will have a Recruiting Booth with our Flag and Banner outside Flynn's Irish Tavern with all Membership Information for New Members. Paul Jenkins, Bill Toomey, and myself will man the Booth and I am looking forward to a very successful Recruiting Drive. As we all know March is our best Month for our Recruiting efforts so let's all give a big push and Recruit one (1) New Member during the month of March. Just a reminder about getting a New Member, I am sure we all have friends and Cousins so ask them to become a member. We cannot win if we do not try. We should also keep in mind that every year we lose around fifteen (15) members through Death, Moving, and Resignation, so therefore they must be replaced each year to keep the Division alive. I would like to mention what one of our active Members mentioned to me many years ago which impressed me very much and stuck in my mind and I agree with his statement, (IF WE DO NOT GROW) (WE MUST GO) I AM SURE NO MEMBER WANTS THAT! So, Members please keep the above statement in mind, and I am requesting that each Member recruit one (1) New Member during 2017. I am wishing all AOH / LAOH members a happy and safe St Patrick's Day. WE ALL CAN ACHIEVE THE EXTRAORDINARY If WE TRY. (ESPECIALLY) IF WE WORK (TOGETHER) Yours. In the Motto, Membership Chairman /Past President Matthew Tully.

A Wee bit of Irish Humor Once upon a time in the kingdom of Heaven God went missing for seven days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him. He inquired of God, "Where were you?" God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds; "Look son, look what I'm after making". Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?" God replied, "It's another planet but I'm after putting LIFE on it. I've named it Earth and there's going to be a balance between everything on it. For example, there's North America and South America. North America is going to be rich and South America is going to be poor. Now look over here. I've put a continent of whites in the north and another one of blacks in the south. And then the archangel said, "And what's that green dot there?" And God said "ahhh that's the Emerald Isle - that's a very spe cial place. That's going to be the most glorious spot on earth; Beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, and an exquisite coast line. These people there are going to be great craic and they're going to be found traveling the world. They'll be play wrights and poets and singers and songwriters. And I'm going to give them this black liquid which they're going to go mad on and for which people will come from the far corners of the earth to imbibe. Michael the Archangel gasped in wonder and admiration but then seeming startled proclaimed: "Hold on a second, what about the BALANCE, you said there was going to be a balance. God replied, "Just wait until you see the neighbors I'm going to give them!" (Submitted by Marty Flynn) Once in a Lifetime Opportunity A Solar Eclipse is coming to South Carolina! That s right, on Monday, August 21st, the first since 1918, is coming our way! And the next one will not be until 2024! A Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon passes between earth and the sun thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the sun. While the Grand Strand will experience a partial blocking of the sun, South of us, in Mount Pleasant, just North of Charleston, there will be total darkness at 2:36 in the afternoon! So get ready for some excitement!
