Saint Hugh, what s not to like?

From the Pastor s Desk Pope Francis has appointed 3 auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago. (see photos in center of bulletin) Bishop-elect Bartosic, 57, has served as pastor of Assumption BVM Parish, and director of the Kolbe House jail ministry. Before that, he served as pastor of St. Frances of Rome Parish and Our Lady of Charity Parish. His first assignment was as associate pastor at St. Agnes of Bohemia Parish. Bishop-elect Robert Casey, 50, was associate pastor at St. Ita Parish. He was named associate director and then director of Casa Jesus, a house of discernment for men from Latin America. He was pastor of Our Lady of Tepeyac Parish, and he co-founded Taller de José, a ministry sponsored by the Congregation of St. Joseph that offers accompaniment to people in need. He was pastor of St. Barbara Parish, then he was appointed pastor of St. Bede. In addition to his duties as pastor, he serves on the priests placement board and the priest steering committee for Renew My Church. Bishop-Elect Ronald Hicks, 50, served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. He was dean of formation at St. Joseph College Seminary, when he received permission to move to El Salvador to begin his five-year term as regional director of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, a ministry that cares for more than 3,400 orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Caribbean. He was dean of formation at Mundelein Seminary, and was vicar general of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop-elect Hicks will retain his duties as vicar general. Bishops-elect Bartosic and Casey will serve as episcopal vicars, in charge of specific geographic areas of the archdiocese. Pope Francis appointed Father Mark Bartosic, Father Robert Casey and Father Ronald Hicks as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago on July 3. At the same time, he accepted the resignations of auxiliary bishops George Rassas and Francis Kane, both of whom are past age 75. The episcopal ordination of the bishops-elect will take place at Holy Name Cathedral, September 17, 2018. Bishop Rassas is the episcopal vicar for Vicariate I, which includes Lake County and northwest suburban Cook County, and Bishop Kane is the episcopal vicar for Vicariate II, which includes much of the North Side of Chicago and the north suburbs in Cook County. This is very great news for the entire Archdiocese! Please pray in their intention! You are in my prayers, Fr. Robert Marchwiany, Pastor Blessings and Glory The second reading from Ephesians is rather long and with only six sentences, it is not easy to follow. To put it simply, he is giving a description of the many blessings God has given us. First is Redemption, meaning that Christ saved us from punishment for our sins by forgiving them instead. Second is the plan of God for saving everyone, by making Christ ruler of the universe. We have to accept these gifts by letting go of the temptations around us and holding on to the love we have received from God. We then share that love with others, so that they know God loves them, too. As our experience of God's love grows, we begin to understand the mystery of how God lives in all people. Paul also reminds us that we are chosen and destined to help God bring his plan, his Kingdom, to completion. When we teach children how to love and share, when we are honest with customers or suppliers, when we are not ashamed to show our faith in Jesus, when we are respectful of the poor, elderly, or disabled, we are slowly building the Kingdom of God. Paul mentions three times in this reading about "the praise of God's glory." (Eph 1:14) When we are able to help or forgive, or just be a good example to others, we want them to know that God is in all the good we do. Instead of taking credit for the results, we give God the glory. No, you don't have to take off your glasses and put on a red cape before helping others. Just mention that God does the real work, we just try not to get in his way. -Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. INSTALLATION OF FR. Stewardship Thought He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick no food, no sack, no money in their belts. (Mark 6:8) How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our life s journey more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. When we really put God first in everything and put money and possessions second, we experience more freedom to joyfully serve God and others. Wills / Bequests After providing for your loved ones, please consider naming Saint Hugh Parish as a beneficiary of your estate. Question of the Week When I feel ill-equipped for the journey, do I trust that God will provide what I need? Vincentian Reflection In the Gospel today we see how Jesus sent his Apostles out two by two. From the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs two by two, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting, that Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Scrip (a.k.a. gift cards) Use our most convenient fundraiser for your kickoff to Summer shopping. We have posted a list of participating retailers in the church vestibule. That list is also at www.sthughlyons.org. In-stock scrip (gift cards) are available after the Masses and during the week at the parish office. Treasures from our Tradition At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry's eldest daughter, Mary, restored the "old religion" in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called "Bloody Mary" for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called "recusants," from a Latin word meaning "refuse," since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim "Recusancy" as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. -Psalm 85:12 God In All In everything, be it a thing sensed, or a thing known, God is hidden within. -St. Bonaventure A Magical Effect Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. -John Quincy Adams
