Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 17 January 2016 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor -- Do whatever he tells you (John 2:1-11) With these words of Mary, His Mother, Jesus works the first of His signs (miracles) with the changing of water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana. Did you ever wonder why Jesus would turn water into wine for people who have drunk freely and probably would not appreciate the quality of the wine made from water?: Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus worked this first of His miracles because He loved the young couple - the bride and groom who had invited Jesus and His mother and disciples to the wedding reception; the couple who as most every couple had planned for and dreamed of this special day and celebration. It is a story about the love of God made flesh in Jesus. It is a witness to the mercy of God their father - not in some abstract way. Jesus answered their need for wine! And in so doing saved the couple from ridicule and embarrassment. And how often have we prayed for a miracle? Miracles still happen - often in ways and through people we least expect; many times not in the way we ask. God our Father loves us, He hears us when we call to Him. During this Year of Mercy may we experience in ever new and deeper ways the love and mercy of God in Christ. And having known the joy and hope of this love and mercy, may we imitate Mary - bringing to the Lord those most in need of Christ s love and mercy in their lives: Do whatever He tells you. May we have that same trust in Jesus. God bless. Let us pray for one another, WELCOME BISHOP PAUL R. SANCHEZ, D.D. On Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:00am, His Excellency, Bishop Sanchez, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to the boys and girls of Saint Luke Parish during the celebration of Mass. We are delighted to welcome Bishop Sanchez for his first visit as bishop to our parish. Please keep the Confirmation candidates and their families in your prayers as they await the gift of the Holy Spirit. Page 1

CAMPAIGN FOR SAINT LUKE We are grateful for those who have faithfully made their pledge payments, however it is so critical that every pledge - when possible - be honored. We still have over a million dollars of pledges outstanding as the close of the Campaign draws near. As always, I am most grateful for your goodness and support of the parish. CAMPAIGN FOR SAINT LUKE AS OF 1/11/16 Update on Campaign status since 1/4/16. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 17, 2016 There are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit. Is the Holy Spirit leading you to share your gifts as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Contact the Vocation Office at (718) 827-2454 or email: vocations@diobrook.org. Page 4

MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. SHARE THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL The Annual Catholic Appeal Office has announced the extension of the 2015 Appeal past the December 31, 2015 closing date. Please take advantage of this extension to complete your pledge. I am pleased to report that we not only achieved the goal of $100,500, but went over our goal! As of January 12th, a total of $116,054.34 has been pledged by 441 donors with $108,180.34 already received. A most sincere thank you to all our generous and loyal parishioners who supported the Annual Catholic Appeal 2015. God bless you. *************************************************************************** MEMORIAL MASSES As happens each year all the Announced Masses for the year 2016 have already been taken in memory of or in honor of a loved one. This speaks of the devotion to and love for the Mass by so many faithful parish members. As a result, we are now not able to offer Announced Masses for 2016. Unannounced Masses are available. An Unannounced Mass is offered for a loved one but the intention (person s name) is not announced or printed. In addition, the Mass is not celebrated here at the parish but rather sent to where Masses are available. However, it is a Mass offered for an individual intention as is the Announced Mass. Also available are the parish Purgatorial Society Mass Enrollment for the deceased in which members are remembered every Sunday at the 1:00pm Mass for one year from the date of enrollment. The names of those deceased enrolled are printed in the bulletin and PAX. Collective Intention Masses for the deceased are celebrated one Sunday and one Saturday a month. Please contact Valerie at the Rectory to arrange for a Mass of to obtain additional information. Page 5

ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN PRO VITA MASS Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus **************************************************************************** Ministry to the Sick and Homebound The care of parishioners who are sick and homebound is very important to the life of any parish and the ministers who participate in their care are clear signs that the community remembers those who no longer can attend church services because of age or illness. Saint Luke Parish is very fortunate to have Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who are devoted to the sick and homebound, some in their own homes and some in The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Whitestone. The ministers are very generous with their time as they visit the sick and homebound praying with them and bringing them holy communion. If you know someone who is in need of a minister s visit with holy communion, please contact Sister Theresa at (718) 746-8531 or (718)-8102. Page 6

CHURCHES IN NEED COLLECTION Next weekend, January 23 & 24 there will be two collections. The first collection is for the support of the parish. The second collection is for the support of churches in need in Latin America, and aid to Eastern Europe and Africa. Your generosity to both collections is greatly appreciated. In Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day the Rectory Office will be closed on Monday, January 18th. The office will reopen on Tuesday, January 19th at 9:00am. Page 7

GOD S GREATEST GIFT During the four weeks of Advent Mrs. Molen s Kindergarten class prepared for the coming of God s Son, the Light of the World. The children learned how get ready to celebrate the coming of the Son of God by sharing, caring and helping others. They also learned that God s greatest gift to us is His Son, Jesus! We had many discussions about how exciting Christmas is and how most children focus on Santa Claus coming and leaving them gifts. We spoke about how sad we would be if someone ignored our birthday. The children gained a greater understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. Simply put, Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Upon returning from Christmas break the children were directed to draw and label pictures of two of their favorite Christmas gifts! When what to my wondering eyes did appear but a picture of baby Jesus! Siena drew a picture of Baby Jesus as one of her favorite Christmas gifts! She made her teacher very proud and I m sure her family is too. GRADE 2 STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THE SACRAMENTS During the month of January the second grade students of St. Luke School and the School of Religion will participate in a First Sacrament Retreat with their parents. The retreats will be held on Saturday, January 23 rd and Saturday, January 30th. The children and their parents will begin their day with attendance at the 8:30 A.M. mass followed by breakfast and fellowship. Sr. Katherine Burke, Fr. Lukasz Lech and the teachers of Religion have prepared an agenda including various activities focused on the sacraments of Penance and First Eucharist. These sacraments will be celebrated during the months of February, March, April, and May. It is with great anticipation and excitement that we watch these children grow and develop their faith in our parish community. Please pray for them and their families during the coming months. Page 14

CHRISTMAS FAIR! St. Luke School once again planned and hosted their annual Christmas Fair! Every year many parents volunteer to host tables of Christmas gifts that the students of our school can purchase as presents for their family. The eighth graders also have a very important role during this festive day. The entire class of 2016 came dressed in their most festive Christmas clothing and helped parent volunteers manage merchandise, while some also took on the role of shopping buddies to help the much younger students buy presents for their family members. On top of these responsibilities eighth graders also helped spread holiday cheer to all who came and visited the Christmas Sale and took on the extremely important role of being Santa s helpers! It was an amazing day to help all those who attended get into the holiday spirit of Christmas! Page 15

No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Sunday Baptism Class January 24 February 14 & 28 February 8 March 13 March 14 April 10 & 24 April 18 May 15 & 22 May 9 June 12 & 26 June 20 When considering godparents, please understand that a Godparent should: 1. be a firm and enthusiastic believer, ready, willing, and able to help his or her godchild live a Christian life. 2. be at least sixteen years old. 3. lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 4. have received all three of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. 5. not be the child s parent.
