It is something very near to you, already in your hearts; you only need to carry it out (Deuteronomy 30:10-14). Psalm Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live (Psalm 69) or Psalm 19. Second Reading All things were created through and for Christ Jesus (Colossians 1:15-20). Gospel To be a neighbor, show love by treating others with mercy, as did the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Excuses, Excuses By the time of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees had added many more laws. The scholar who questioned Jesus about eternal life knew what was important: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as yourself. If he had stopped there, he would have been all right. But by asking Who is my neighbor? he implied that there are limits to love. That s why Jesus used the parable of the good Samaritan to show that love is as simple as helping someone in need. Even today, we find people making excuses for not doing what God asks of us. We want someone else to interpret it for us, hoping they will find a loophole we can use to ignore God s commands. We judge people who need help, saying they choose to be poor or homeless. We say that between work and family obligations, we have no time to give to the community. We sign our kids up for so many sports that we don t even go to church on Sundays. We always have time to watch our favorite TV shows, but there s never enough time for daily prayers. Before you start beating yourself up with guilt, remember that God expects us to take care of our families, to spend time with our children, and even to take time to rest and relax. If we are willing to look at our lives and bring them to God, asking for guidance, we are making the first steps to keep God s law of love. If you wish to offer the Wine and Altar Breads for the Weekend or Weekday Masses, please call the Rectory.
