The Vson D&C 76 185 TH ANNIVERSARY ANNOTATIONS Whle ths s stll a work n progress (t needs a fnal edt for multple reasons), t s essentally complete. Updates wll be posted on ForgottenMormonTeachngs.com as they become avalable. When I frst took the mssonary dscussons, I was very skeptcal. It wasn t untl the dscusson about the plan of salvaton that I really got excted about the dscussons. For the frst tme n my lfe, someone was able to answer questons about how God deals wth hs chldren wth smple, reasonable, mercful answers. The pre-exstence and the three degrees of glory blew away hundreds of years of tradtons that never made any sense to me and started a thrst for doctrnal understandng that has never been fully quenched. D&C 76 therefore has a specal place n my heart. In antcpaton of a global project annotatng the entre Doctrne and Covenants, I decded to start wth D&C 76, partally because t s full of meaty doctrne and partally because t came wth the extra jucy morsel of Joseph Smth s poetc verson. I fgured that by the tme I fnshed D&C 76, I d have fgured out a template for the larger project and I was rght. It took bumps and bruses to get a good, workng format fgured out. I dug through well over 1,500 scrptural and doctrnal cross references and sorted them by the type of materal found n each. Q references essentally offer other places where a phrase or couplet shows up n other scrptures or doctrnal sources. Δ references offer doctrnal expansons on a phrase or couplet. Sometmes those explanatons are quas-trval but nonetheless noteworthy. Sometmes the doctrnal expansons are qute enlghtenng and profound. Bolded references doctrnally expand a phrase or couplet more heavly than other references. References wthout a Q or Δ are n need of further sortng. I took a cue from Chrstan study bbles and separated the revelaton wth multple, dstnct headers so cross references for broad, sweepng concepts could be housed n an easly referenced format rather than beng bured n multple places n footnotes where they are easly lost and dffcult to fnd. Cross references found drectly under these headers do not contan Q or Δ references because they address the more broad topcs descrbed by the headngs themselves. Wth few exceptons, they are clearly doctrnal references.

I restored the orgnal spellng, captalzaton, and grammar of the vson wth a few noted exceptons marked n brackets. Modern versfcaton s retaned for easy reference. I retaned the modern versfcaton n the poetc verson as well. Bolded words n the poetc verson mark changes and addtons to the orgnal. Footnotes are much more sparse n the poetc verson and observatons are relatvely sparse as well. In the future book verson where all annotatons wll be typed out for easy study, those observatons wll be heavly expanded. For now, the few nterestng observatons ncluded n ths annotaton wll hopefully open eager eyes to subtle doctrnes found n D&C 76. If nothng else, hopefully they wll wet your appette for more nsghts to follow. Many thanks to BYU for puttng out the LDS Scrpture Ctaton Index so I was able to research annotatons more quckly than I antcpated. I lmted my research from Joseph Smth s tme to 1919 for two reasons: (1) I m a hstoran and I m more nterested n the teachngs of the early brethren than I am n modern teachngs and (2) t was around that tme when LDS Church teachngs started evolvng rather quckly n some doctrnal areas. If you re nterested n what more modern brethren teach about D&C 76, I encourage you to look to the LDS Scrpture Ctaton Index for more nformaton. It has a wealth of nformaton to research. If you have any questons, errata notes, or suggestons for future work on ths project, please feel free to contact me at drewbrney@gmal.com.

RECEIVED 2/16/1832 76 VISION OF JOSEPH SMITH AND SIDNEY RIGDON IN JOHN JOHNSON HOME (HIRAM, OHIO) CANONIZED 1835 SOURCE HC 1:245, 52; JD 3:81-85 Although Joseph Smth, Jr. receved several vsons durng hs lfetme, both he and the sants affectonately referred to ths secton of the D&C as the vson throughout the nneteenth century. It was receved after translatng John 5:29. Joseph wrote: From sundry revelatons whch had been receved, t was apparent that many mportant ponts touchng the salvaton of man had been taken from the Bble, or lost before t was compled. It appeared self-evdent from what truths were left, that f God rewarded everyone accordng to the deeds done n the body, the term Heaven, as ntended for the sants eternal home, must nclude more kngdoms than one. Accordngly whle translatng St. John s Gospel, myself and elder Rgdon saw the followng vson. Speakng more pontedly about the doctrne revealed n the vson, Joseph wrote: Nothng could be more pleasng to the sants upon the order of the kngdom of the Lord, than the lght whch burst upon the world through the foregong vson. Every law, every commandment, every promse, every truth, and every pont touchng the destny of man, from Geness to Revelaton, where the purty of ether remans unsulled from the wsdom of men, go to show the perfecton of the theory [of dfferng degrees of glory] and wtnesses the fact that that document s a transcrpt from the records of the eternal world. The sublmty of the deas; the purty of the language; the scope for acton; the contnued duraton for completon, n order that the hers of salvaton may confess the Lord and bow the knee [vs. 73-74]. The rewards for fathfulness, and the punshments for sns, are so much beyond the narrow-mndedness of men, that every honest man s constraned to exclam: It came from God. HC 1:252 53; TPJS, 11. Joseph further noted that Paul ascended nto the thrd heavens, and he could understand the three prncpal rounds of Jacob s ladder the telestal, the terrestral, and the celestal glores or kngdoms, where Paul saw and heard thngs whch were not lawful for hm to utter. I could explan a hundred fold more than I ever have of the glores of the kngdoms manfested to me n the vson, were I permtted, and were the people prepared to receve them. The Lord deals wth ths people as a tender parent wth a chld, communcatng lght and ntellgence and the knowledge of hs ways as they can bear t. HC 5:402; TPJS, 305. Brgham Young, speakng of ths vson and the three degrees of glory, sad that t s the greatest vson gven to the chldren of men, ncorporatng more n a few pages than any other revelaton I have any knowledge of. JD 8:36a. He further noted that t occuped more of hs affecton, adoraton, and heartfelt grattude to our Father and God than any other that has ever been revealed to my knowledge, from the days of Adam to the present. no other revelaton so B.H. Roberts changed wsdom to folly.

glorous was ever gven. You may read the character of the Dety as portrayed n all that has ever been revealed, untl you come to ths vson, n relaton to hs justce, hs judgment, hs power, hs lfe, hs glory, hs excellence, hs goodness, hs mercy, and the fullness of every gft, of every trat, of every prncple nherent n the character of the Supreme Beng, and t s not equal n magntude, n my reflectons, to that whch God revealed to Joseph Smth and Sdney Rgdon n the vson. The doctrne God has revealed here s more precous to me, and s worth more than, all the doctrnes of Chrstendom. JD 8:152-53. Wlford Woodruff sad that ths great vson (JD 22:331b) gves more lght, more truth, and more prncple than any revelaton contaned n any other book we ever read. It makes plan to our understandng our present condton, where we came from, why we are here, and where we are gong to. Any man may know through that revelaton what hs part and condton wll be. For all men know what laws they keep, and the laws whch men keep here wll determne ther poston hereafter; they wll be preserved by those laws and receve the blessngs whch belong to them. JD 22:146 47. He added that when he frst read that vson t swept away a vel that had been around me all my lfe; t opened my understandng and shook off my shackles. There was somethng n t so dfferent from the old sectaran noton - somethng that swept away the dea of one heaven, one hell, and that those who do not go to one place must go to the other, and that all n heaven have an equal glory, and all n hell an equal msery. There always appeared somethng very nconsstent connected wth the doctrne of future rewards and punshments as taught by modern dvnes; but when I got hold of the vson, I saw more lght, more consstency, and Godlke mercy and justce than I had ever seen n my lfe. JD 8:265-66 (see also JD 5:84). Wlford Woodruff accepted Joseph Smth as a prophet as a result of readng ths vson: Before I saw Joseph, I sad I dd not care how old he was, or how young he was; I dd not care how he looked whether hs har was long or short; the man that advanced that revelaton was a prophet of God. I knew t for myself. MS 53:628 (Desert Weekly News, 43:321, #2) John Taylor sad that the vson was one of the most sublme revelatons he had ever read and that God wll brng order out of all the confuson that has exsted, measure out mercy to all Adam s posterty and gve to all a far opportunty of beng saved. JD 10:120a Orson Pratt noted Here, [n D&C 76], were greater thngs made manfest than those n the Book of Mormon or those n the Bble. JD 20:70b Smlarly, Apostle Charles W. Penrose called t one of the most glorous vsons that human bengs ever gazed upon. It s the most complete and delghtful Smlarly, Joseph Smth sad of the Book of Mormon that t was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our relgon, and a man would get nearer to God by abdng by ts precepts, than by any other book. HC 4:461 Be sure to tell the people to keep the Sprt of the Lord; and f they wll they wll fnd themselves just as they were organzed by our Father n Heaven before they came nto the world. Our Father n Heaven organzed the human famly, but they are all dsorganzed and n great confuson. Joseph then showed me the pattern, how they were n the begnnng. Ths I cannot descrbe, but I saw t, and saw where the Presthood had been taken from the earth and how f must be joned together, so that there would be a perfect chan from Father Adam to hs latest posterty. UR 66; Manuscrpt Hstory of Brgham Young, 2/23/1847.

that I have ever read. There s nothng n the book called the Bble that can compare wth t. JD 24:92 Notwthstandng these sentments, some of the sants struggled wth doctrnes taught n the vson: When God revealed to Joseph Smth and Sdney Rgdon that there was a place prepared for all, accordng to the lght they had receved and ther rejecton of evl and practce of good, t was a great tral to many, and some apostatzed because God was not gong to send to everlastng punshment heathens and nfants, but had a place of salvaton, n due tme, for all, and would bless the honest and vrtuous and truthful, whether they ever belonged to any church or not. JD 16:42; see also JD 3:8; 12:105. Even Brgham Young struggled to accept the doctrnes found n the vson. When he frst heard t, he noted my tradtons were such that when the Vson came frst to me, t was drectly contrary and opposed to my former educaton. I sad, Wat a lttle. I dd not reject t; but I could not understand t. JD 6:281; see also JD 18:247b. For further commentary on the vson, see JD 1:57a. 76 POETIC VERSION: A VISION PUBLISHED 2/1/1843 NOT CANONIZED SOURCE T&S 4:82-85 #6 Ths poem was orgnally publshed under Joseph Smth s name n the Tmes and Seasons whle John Taylor was edtor. Apostle Taylor wrote about t n glowng terms: Uncontrolled by the narrow lmts of ths earth, and rased above all sublunary objects, hs mnd soars aloft unto other kngdoms, unravels the secrets of eternty, and contemplates the organzaton of worlds, n other spheres: the destny of the lvng, the dyng, and the dead are developed; together wth the laws that govern other worlds, and the state of ther nhabtants; the heavens of heavens, open before hs gaze, and the celestal kngdom; the habtaton of the great I Am, wth all ts resplendent, brllant, and dazzlng glory, bursts upon hs sght. The Celestal, the Terrestral and the Telestal worlds, wth all ther magnfcence and beauty are open to hs vew; whlst the varous states of ther respectve nhabtants, are presented before hs vson.... Our poet seems to be perfectly at home among heavenly worlds, and converses about ther proceedngs wth as much famlarty as one could do about hs domestc economy. He unlocked great, and mportant prncples whch were ndeed made known to the ancents; but whch have been hd for ages: and when we contemplate the thngs that are unfolded we shall be led to say wth Paul, great s the mystery of godlness. " T&S 4:81 #6. Ths poem has the same subheadngs as the orgnal vson. For further convenence and comparson, sgnfcant devatons from the orgnal vson have been bolded. No addtonal changes have been made from the orgnal publcaton exceptng the addton of modern verses (stanza numberng has been removed) and the modernzaton of spellng and occasonal archac punctuaton. Cross-references n ths poetc verson are lmted to tems unque to the poem; for further references, see the orgnal vson. GOD IS THE SAME THROUGHOUT ETERNITY I wll go, I wll go, to the home of the Sants, Where the vrtue's the value, and lfe the reward; But before I return to my former estate, I must fulfll the msson I had from the Lord. 1 Wherefore, hear, O ye heavens, and gve ear O ye earth, And rejoce ye nhabtants truly agan; For the Lord he s God, and hs lfe never ends And besdes hm there ne'er was a Savor of men. 2 Hs ways are a wonder; hs wsdom s great; The extent of hs dongs, there's none can unvel; 3 Hs purposes fal not; from age unto age 4 He stll s the same, and hs years never fal.

Hs throne s the heavens, hs lfetme s all Of eternty now, and eternty then; Hs unon s power, and none stays hs hand - The Alpha, Omega, for ever: Amen. GOD WILL REVEAL THE WONDERS OF ETERNITY 5 For thus sath the Lord, n the sprt of truth, I am mercful, gracous, and good unto those That fear me, and lve for the lfe that's to come; My delght s to honor the sants wth repose; That serve me n rghteousness true to the end; 6 Eternal's ther glory and great ther reward. 7 I'll surely reveal all my myst'res to them - Tho great hdden myst'res n my kngdom stor'd - From the councl n Kolob, to tme on the earth. 7/8 And for ages to come unto them I wll show My pleasure & wll, what the kngdom wll do: Eternty's wonders they truly shall know. Great thngs of the future I'll show unto them, Yea, thngs of the vast generatons to rse; 9 For ther wsdom and glory shall be very great, And ther pure understandng extend to the skes: And before them the wsdom of wse men shall cease, And the nce understandng of prudent ones fal! 10 For the lght of my sprt shall lght mne elect, And the truth s so mghty 't wll ever preval. And the secrets and plans of my wll I'll reveal; The sanctfed pleasures when earth s renew'd, What the eye hath not seen, nor the earth hath yet heard; Nor the heart of the natural man ever hath vew'd. JOSEPH SMITH, JR. SHOWN A VISION 11 I, Joseph, the prophet, n sprt beheld, And the eyes of the nner man truly dd see 12 Eternty sketch'd n a vson from God, Of what was, and now s, and yet s to be. 13 Those thngs whch the Father ordaned of old, Before the world was or a system had run - Through Jesus, the Maker and Savor of all; The only begotten, (Messah) hs son.

14 Of whom I bear record, as all prophets have, And the record I bear s the fullness yea, even The truth of the gospel of Jesus - the Chrst, Wth whom I convers'd n the vson of heav'n. 15 For whle n the act of translatng hs word, Whch the Lord n hs grace had apponted to me, I came to the gospel recorded by John, Chapter ffth, and the twenty-nnth verse whch you'll see. Whch was gven as follows: 16 Speakng of the resurrecton of the dead - Concernng those who shall hear the voce of the son of man - 17 And shall come forth - They who have done good n the resurrecton of the just. And they who have done evl n the resurrecton of the unjust. THE GLORY OF GOD 18 I marvel'd at these resurrectons, ndeed! For t came unto me by the sprt drect - 19 And whle I dd medtate what t all meant, The Lord touch'd the eyes of my own ntellect - Hosanna, forever! They open'd anon, 20 And the glory of God shone around where I was; And there was the Son at the Father's rght hand, In a fulness of glory, and holy applause. 21 I beheld round the throne holy angels and hosts, And sanctfed bengs from the worlds that have been, In holness worshppng God and the Lamb, Forever and ever, amen and amen! 22 And now after all of the proofs made of hm, By wtnesses truly, by whom he was known, Ths s mne, last of all, that he lves; yea, he lves! 23 And sts at the rght hand of God, on hs throne. And I heard a great voce bearng record from heav'n, He's the Savour, and only begotten of God - 24 By hm, of hm, and through hm, the worlds were all made, Even all that career n the heavens so broad, Ths conversaton s not recorded n the orgnal or n the poetc verson. See TPJS, 305. In Noah Webster s 1828 Dctonary, we fnd that career refers to a general course of acton, ground where a course s run, or runnng.

Whose nhabtants, too, from the frst to the last, Are sav'd by the very same Savour of ours; And, of course, are begotten God's daughters and sons By the very same truths, and the very same pow rs. LUCIFER S REBELLION AND FALL 25 And I saw and bear record of warfare n heav n; For an angel of lght, n authorty great, Rebell'd aganst Jesus, and sought for hs pow r, But was thrust down to woe from hs Godfed v state. 26 And the heavens all wept, and the tears drop'd lke dew, That Lucfer, son of the mornng, had fell! 27 Yea, s fallen! s fall n and become, Oh, alas! The son of perdton; the devl of hell! 28 And whle I was yet n the sprt of truth, The commandment was: Wrte ye the vson all out; 29 For Satan, old serpent, the devl's for war - And yet wll encompass the Sants round about. SONS OF PERDITION 30 And I saw, too, the suff'rng and ms ry of those, (Overcome by the devl, n warfare and fght) In hell-fre and vengeance, the doom of the damn'd; For the Lord sad, the vson s further: so wrte. 31 For thus sath the Lord, now concernng all those, Who know of my power and partake of the same; And suffer themselves, that they be overcome By the power of Satan; despsng my name v - Defyng my power, and denyng the truth - 32 They are they - of the world, or of men, most forlorn, The Sons v of Perdton, of whom, ah! I say, 'T were better for them had they never been born! 33 They're the vessels of wrath, and dshonor to God, Doom'd to suffer hs wrath, n the regons of woe, Through the terrfc nght of eternty's round, Wth the devl and all of hs angels below: JD 14:71 D&C 76:28; TPJS, 357; JD 3:249b; 4:38b; 8:279b; 26:161b, 305a, 332a; See verse 33 of the poetc verson where there are regons of woe. v Godfed s captalzed n the orgnal; t s also captalzed n verse 58 of the poetc verson where t refers to the church of the frstborn. v D&C 76:35, 43-44 v See verse 27 of the poetc verson: son s not captalzed

34 Of whom t s sad, no forgveness s gv n, In ths world, alas! nor the world that's to come; 35 For they have dened the sprt of God. After havng recev'd t: and ms'ry's ther doom. And denyng the only begotten of God - And crucfy hm to themselves, as they do, And openly put hm to shame n ther flesh, By the gospel they cannot repentance renew. 36 They are they, who must go to the great lake of fre, Whch burneth wth brmstone, yet never consumes, And dwell wth the devl, and angels of hs, Whle eternty goes and eternty comes. 37 They are they who must groan through the great second death, 38 And are not redeemed n the tme of the Lord; 39 Whle all the rest are, through the trumph of Chrst, Made partakers of grace, by the power of hs word. The myst'ry of Godlness truly s great - The past, and the present, and what s to be; 34 And ths s the gospel - glad tdngs to all, Whch the voce from the heavens bore record to me: 41 That he came to the world n the mddle of tme, To lay down hs lfe for hs frends and hs foes, And bear away sn as a msson of love; And sanctfy earth for a blessed repose. 43 'Ts decreed that he'll save all the work of hs hands, And sanctfy them by hs own precous blood; And purfy earth for the Sabbath of rest, By the agent of fre as t was by the flood. The Savor wll save all hs Father dd gve, Even all that he gave n the regons abroad, 44 Save the Sons of Perdton: They re lost; ever v lost, And can never return to the presence of God. They are they, who must regn wth the devl n hell, In eternty now, and eternty then, Where the worm deth not, and the fre s not quench'd - And the punshment stll s eternal. Amen. And whch s the torment apostates receve, 45 But the end, or the place where the torment began, 46 Save to them who are made to partake of the same, Was never, nor wll be, revealed unto man. 47 Yet God shows by vson a glmpse of ther fate, And straghtway he closes the scene that was shown: 48 So the wdth, or the depth, or the msery thereof, Save to those that partake, s forever unknown. And whle I was ponderng, the vson was closed; 49 And the voce sad to me, wrte the vson: for, lo! 'Ts the end of the scene of the sufferngs of those, Who reman flthy stll n ther angush and woe. CELESTIAL GLORY 50 And agan I bear record of heavenly thngs, Where vrtue's the value above all that s prc'd, Of the truth of the gospel concernng the just, That rse n the frst resurrecton of Chrst. 51 Who recev'd, and belev'd, and repented lkewse, And then were baptz'd, as a man always was, Who ask'd and recev'd a remsson of sn, And honored the kngdom by keepng ts laws. Beng bured n water, as Jesus had been, 52 And keepng the whole v of hs holy commands, They receved the gft of the sprt of truth, By the ordnance truly of layng on hands. 53 For these overcome, by ther fath and ther works, Beng tred n ther lfetme, as purfed gold, And seal'd by the sprt of promse to lfe, By men called of God, as was Aaron of old. 54 They are they, of the church of the frstborn of God - 55 And unto whose hands he commtteth all thngs; For they hold the keys of the kngdom of heav'n, 56 And regn wth the Savor, as prests, and as kngs. 57 They're prests of the order of Melchzedek,[sc] Lke Jesus (from whom s ths hghest reward), Recevng a fullness of glory and lght; 58 As wrtten: They're Gods; even sons of the Lord. 59 So all thngs are thers; yea, of lfe, or of death; Yea, whether thngs now, or to come, all are thers, And they are the Savor's, and he s the Lord's, 60 Havng overcome all, as eternty's hers. 61 'Ts wsdom that man never glory n man, But gve God the glory for all that he hath; For the rghteous wll walk n the presence of God, Whle the wcked are trod under foot n hs wrath. 62 Yea, the rghteous shall dwell n the presence of God, And of Jesus, forever, from earth's second brth - 63 For when he comes down n the splendor of heav'n, All those he'll brng wth hm, to regn on the earth. 64 These are they that arse n ther bodes of flesh, When the trump of the frst resurrecton shall sound; 66 These are they that come up to Mount Zon, n lfe, Where the blessngs and gfts of the sprt abound. These are they that have come to the heavenly place; To the numberless courses of angels above: To the cty of God, e'en the holest of all, And the home of the blessed, the fountan of love; 67 To the church of old Enoch, and of the frst born: And gen'ral assembly of ancent renown'd, 68 Whose names are all kept n the archves of heav'n, As chosen and fathful, and ft to be crown'd. 69 These are they that are perfect through Jesus' own blood, 70 Whose bodes celestal are menton'd by Paul, Where the sun s the typcal glory thereof, And God, and hs Chrst, are the true judge of all. TERRESTRIAL GLORY 71 Agan, I beheld the terrestral world, In the order and glory of Jesus, go on; 'Twas not as the church of the frst born of God, But shone n ts place, as the moon to the sun. 72 Behold, these are they that have ded wthout law; The heathen of ages that never had hope, And those of the regon and shadow of death, The sprts n prson, that lght has brought up. 73 To sprts n prson the Savor once preach'd, And taught them the gospel, wth powers afresh; And then were the lvng baptz'd for ther dead, That they mght be judg'd as f men n the flesh. (75) These are they that are hon'rable men of the earth; Who were blnded and dup'd by the cunnng of men: 74 They recev'd not the truth of the Savor at frst; But dd, when they heard t n prson, agan. (79) Not valant for truth, they obtan'd not the crown, (78) But are of that glory that's typ'd by the moon: (77) They are they, that come nto the presence of Chrst, 76 But not to the fullness of God on hs throne. TELESTIAL GLORY 81 Agan, I beheld the telestal, as thrd, The lesser, or starry world, next n ts place. For the leaven must leaven three measures of meal, And every knee bow v that s subject to grace. 82 These are they that recev'd not the gospel of Chrst, 83 Or evdence, v ether, that he ever was; (81) As the stars are all dff'rent n glory and lght, So dffers the glory of these by the laws. 83 These are they that deny not the sprt of God, 84/85 But are thrust down to hell, wth the devl, for sns, (103) As hypocrtes, lars, whoremongers and theves, 85 And stay 'tll the last resurrecton begns. 'Tll the Lamb shall have fnsh'd the work he begun; Shall have trodden the wne press, n fury alone, And overcome all by the pow'r of hs mght: He conquers to conquer, and saves all hs own. 86 These are they that receve not a fullness of lght, From Chrst, n eternty's world, where they are, The terrestal sends them the Comforter, v though; And mnst'rng angels, v to happfy there.
