GRADE SCHOOL: WHAT S HAPPENING? Happy Birthday (generic) Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday, God bless you. Happy Birthday to you. Good Things Good Things is a great time for children to express something good that happened in the past week. The range of good things swings from I just got back from vacation! to, I scored my first soccer goal yesterday! to, My parents didn t fight this week! and even sometimes, My mom started coming to church with us today!. All are good and allows you to get to know the children whom God has entrusted to you, and allows the children to feel they are part of something special. It s also a great time to ask children if they heard anything or learned anything that hadn t known before. What s up with the skit? Weird. Silly. Stupid. What s the point? Giggle. Chuckle. We hear it all about the video skit. The point of the video skit is, in the best way we know how, to demonstrate what God is not. If you look for that, you will be able to stand up and say, Did you see that skit? I am so glad God is not like that. Here s why What does this mean to me? What does the Trinity mean to me? People have spent a life-time on a journey trying to understand and explain the Trinity. At the end of the journey, they certainly will know God better than when they began, but no one can ever fully understand everything there is to know about God, including the three persons of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I think the triplet did a good job of showing us what the Trinity is not. The Trinity is one God, yet three persons. The Trinity always agrees with each other. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit act the same way even though they are three different persons. Is your mind spinning? Every time I start thinking through all the specifics of the Trinity, my mind starts spinning too. Last weekend we focused on the second person of the Trinity (no we didn t do them in order). His name is Jesus Christ. He is the only Son of God. Jesus was the promise told to Eve in the Garden of Eden after she and Adam sinned for the first time. He was promised to others for thousands of years throughout the beginning of world history.. This weekend we focused on God the Father. God the Father is the first person of the Trinity. He has all the power and is always in control just like God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. One of my favorite things about God the Father is His name. You see, He called Himself father meaning He wants to have a relationship with you. He wants to protect you. He wants to provide for you. He wants to teach and train you. I bet that if you have an earthly father, he s not perfect. No one is. But I promise you God the Father is a perfect father all the time. We may not be able to understand everything about the Trinity but we can understand that, can t we? Be sure you have made the decision today to trust God as your heavenly Father. Trinity Truths: Three Persons: We know God as three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Three in One: All three persons are fully God in every way. One God: There is only one, true living God. Worship Him: God wants us to know Him, believe Him but most importantly, to worship Him. Trinity Motions: Three Persons: With your right hand, hold three fingers above your head. Three in One: Draw right hand down towards your chest and make the number one. One God: Move your right hand number one finger back to the sky and point upwards. Worship Him: Open your palm and raise the roof with your palm with excitement. 6

Activity (10 minutes) Human Farkle We will play a game every week this month, but because of the reverent nature of the Trinity, our game will be just for fun. A good energy release will help your class to focus on the serious and reverent nature of the Trinity. Supplies: Optional line tape We will play a game every week this month, but because of the reverent nature of the Trinity, our game will be just for fun. A good energy release will help your class to focus on the serious and reverent nature of the Trinity. 1. Split the group into two teams. Put each team on a line. A third line is placed in the middle. 2. Each team secretly confers and picks one of the following animals and the motions that match. Choices: Bear: raise your arms and roar, Fish: make fish lips while putting hands together and move them in swimming motions in front of chest, or Mosquito: arms are at sides, hands out and waving while making a buzzing noise. 3. After the teams have picked an animal, they line up back to back on the middle line. 4. Count to three, then jump-turn and immediately start doing the motions of the animal chosen. Just like in rock, paper, scissors, each thing beats out another. The bear eats the fish, fish eats the mosquito and mosquito stings the bear. Instead of just standing there, it becomes a tag game. 5. The winners of the farkle should chase the members of the other team. The team that lost is trying to make it to their line without getting tagged. If they are tagged, they join the opposing team. 6. This continues until all players are on one team or time is running short. They must do the gestures that go along with the animal so there is no confusion as to what each animal really is. If they are the same animal, go back to original lines, pick an animal to be and start again.
