THE GOOD NEWS LETTER FROM PASTOR DAVE Hello Seaside, The other day I was reading my Bible and the book of 1 Corinthians in the New Testament. One verse that really stuck out to me was 1 Corinthians 12:4 when it said, There are different spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit. That got me thinking about diversity and I then ran across an article written by my friend and colleague, the Rev. Mary Scifres, about this same subject that really got me thinking. Especially in this season of the usual summer travels for families, busy life schedules, church nominating season, guests who come to worship, baptisms and new members joining, life changes for others, and even the season of LGBTQ Pride too. 1 Corinthians 12:4 is a wonderful reminder of who unites us and binds us together, and also a wonderful reminder of who gifts us with the beautiful gift of our diversity. (Hint, it s God.) Each person who enters our church doors is different from the next. Thanks be to God! We each bring different gifts, different abilities, different talents, different life experiences, and different levels of confidence and comfort. Of course, we also bring different hairstyles, different orientations and gender identities, different shades of pigment in our skin, and different shapes to our bodies. Add these differences to the myriad of others like different family configurations, different attitudes and opinions, and different academic and employment histories and it s obvious that when we gather as the church, we gather in diversity! At Seaside we have a wonderful history of welcoming and celebrating all the diversity God created. And I want to continue to encourage us to celebrate the diversity of gifts by giving thanks for each person who arrives to worship. They have gifted us with their presence! Celebrate the guests and the returning guests. Give thanks for each person who serves in whatever way they serve, whether big or small. Celebrate the teachers and the music ministry members, but also the cooks and the clean-up crews. Celebrate our elected leaders and, yes, even the pastor. But also the helpers who work behind the scenes. This celebration doesn t need to be formal. In my mind it s more of a mindfulness. Why? Because everyone and every gift they bring matters, because everyone and every gift is well, a gift. As we celebrate this diversity, let us also celebrate the one who gives us this wonderful gift. God created us in love, saves us in love, and unites us in love so we can go and share that love, that gift of love, with all the world. May that same spirit unite us in our journey into summer and beyond as we celebrate! Peace and Blessings, Pastor Dave SEASIDECOMMUNITY Phone: 310 375 4111 UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST SeasideUCC.org 22940 Ocean Ave. Seaside@SeasideUCC.org Torrance CA 90505

CLASSES, OUTREACH & NEWS FOOD FOR KIDS FOOD COLLECTION We hope by now, you have noticed the big sign-up board in the. Our Seaside children have been learning about other families in our community who may not always have enough to eat, especially on the weekends, and have decorated this board to remind us of ways we can help those families. If you have not already done so, please sign up for as many food items as you are able to provide. You will notice, they are grouped by types of food and the quantity of each needed. Please, feel free to sign up for as many items as possible. Contributions will be collected on June 4th and again on June 11th. On June 11th, after worship, we will have fellowship in the prayer garden, and the congregation, children to senior, will have the opportunity to gather on the lawn to sort the collected food by categories and pack the bags of groceries to be delivered to The Volunteer Center of the South Bay on Monday morning. The Center will then take these bags on Friday to local elementary schools who have families in need, as part of their Food for Kids program. Our goal is to collect and pack enough for 50 bags!!! Lots of helping hands will make short work of this job, while enjoying our fellowship time together. Please plan to be a part of this fun and rewarding new program at Seaside UCC!

MINISTRY NEWS AND UPDATES SISTERS IN SPIRIT WOMEN S GROUP Friday, June 23, 2017 6:30 pm in the We had another great gathering in May and so enjoyed reconnecting with two of our sisters who aren t often able to attend. Our topic was a discussion of "Hope". What are we hopeful for in this time of our lives? What gives us hope when our lives, or the world, seem like they are crashing down on us? As the conversation progresses during the evening, we enjoy the experience of learning more and more about the wonderful women who participate in this group. We will be working on a topic for our June meeting and will let you all know what we come up with. And if any of you have a topic that is of interest and relevant to you at this time, please let us know. We will send out a reminder to you all about a week before our June get together, so we can start planning for the refreshments for the evening. Have a wonderful June as we head towards summer and all the fun that season brings.
