Guess the religion On the next 4 slides you will see 4 religious celebrations or festivals. Can you name them and the people that celebrate them (choose from below)? Religion: The belief in and worship of a god or gods, or beliefs about the meaning of life and the world. Jews Buddhists Hindus Christians Muslims Sikhs

1) 7 th November 2018 When you re ready click for answers! Diwali is the Hindu festival of light! Hindus celebrate the idea that light is better than darkness, and the hope that good will happen. Houses are cleaned, people visit each other, art / decorations, lights and fireworks are used. Jews Buddhists Hindus Christians Muslims Sikhs

2) 9 th -11 th September 2018 When you re ready click for answers! Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year festival, a time to reflect and ask for forgiveness. Jews believe God decides what will happen in the year ahead. A lot of time is spent in the synagogue where the shofar, a special horn, is blown. A special meal of apples dipped in honey is eaten. Jews Buddhists Hindus Christians Muslims Sikhs

3) 25 th December 2018 When you re ready click for answers! Christmas is a Christian holy day that marks the birth of Jesus who Christians believe to be the Son of God. The story of Jesus' birth is often retold through 'Nativity Plays, people sing carols that tell the Christmas story and give presents to remind them of the gift of Jesus. Jews Buddhists Hindus Christians Muslims Sikhs

4) 21 st -25 th August 2018 When you re ready click for answers! Today we are exploring the Islamic festivals of Eid (there are two Eids), one of which Muslims have only recently finished celebrating, called Eid al-adha! Does anyone know what Eid al- Adha is? Here are some clues! Jews Buddhists Hindus Christians Muslims Sikhs

Should Eid* be a public holiday?

What is Eid? or 1. There are two Eid celebrations. Eid means feast or festival in Arabic! Click to watch a short video about Eid. Decide whether the five statements on the right are true or false. Click for answers. 2. The first Eid is called Eid al-adha. The first Eid is called Eid al-fitr! 3. During Ramadan, some Muslims don t eat or drink during the day (fasting). 0:00-3:58 4. Eid Mubarak means Happy Eid! 5. Eid al-adha celebrates the end of Ramadan. Eid al-adha celebrates the end of Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5b6afb75df26a

What is Eid? Both Eids (Eid al-adha and Eid al-fitr) are really important celebrations for Muslims all around the world! Muslims celebrate with prayer, visits to family and friends, a nice meal, new clothes and giving of gifts and money. Eid al-adha was celebrated from 21 st to 25 th August. Also called The Festival of Sacrifice, Muslims remember the Prophet Ibrahim s willingness to sacrifice his only son. During Eid al-adha, an animal is sacrificed and the meat is shared with others! Millions of Muslim people live in the UK and many celebrate Eid. At the moment, Eid is not a public holiday in the UK.

What would be fair? At the moment, people in the UK have eight public holidays each year. These are days when no one is expected to be at school or work. You are usually on school holidays for them so they might be hard to guess! Do you know when any of the public holidays are? Some clues are in the calendar. Click for answers. Challenge: Name three public holidays that are linked to a religion. Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Easter Monday New Year! Good Friday Summer Bank Holiday Christmas Day

What would be fair? 14.1 million people Have no religion Before we go further, let s explore how many people follow different religions here in the UK! 33.2 million people are Christian 248,000 people are 263,000 people are 423,000 people are Religion in the UK Choose from: Hindu Buddhist Jewish Muslim Sikh 817,000 people are 2.7 million people are This pie chart shows the number of people who follow each religion in the UK*. Can you fill in the grey boxes? Two have been done for you. Go to next slide for answers

What would be fair? (Answers) 14.1 million people Have no religion 33.2 million people are Christian 248,000 people are Buddhist 263,000 people are Jewish Religion in the UK 423,000 people are Sikh 817,000 people are Hindu 2.7 million people are Muslim What do you think? Did you get the answers correct?

What would be fair? You might have noticed that 3 public holidays are from the Christian calendar.* There are no public holidays in the UK for any other religious festivals / celebrations. Discuss these questions. 1. Are the public holidays we have fair? 2. Would it be fair to make Eid a public holiday and not any other religious celebrations? Yet many people who live here in the UK follow a religion that is not Christianity. Islam is the UK s second largest religion 1. Public holiday: days when no one is expected to be at school or work.

If you were in charge Each public holiday in the UK costs billions of s. Earlier in the year when the government was asked if Eid could be made a public holiday, they said it was too expensive. New York made Eid a public holiday for school children in 2016! Countries usually give public holidays to the religion with the most followers but some give public holidays to lots of religions. Important info! Even though religious celebrations like Eid or Diwali are not public holidays in the UK, many people take them off. Schools and places of work usually allow this to make sure everyone is treated equally.

If you were in charge Decide which of these options you would choose for public holidays. Think about the cost of each and how fair each option is. Present your choice and explain why. Option 1: Make Eid a public holiday. Option 3: Keep public holidays the same. Option 2: Give every religion a public holiday. Challenge: Come up with your own option that you think is most fair.

Should Eid be a public holiday? No Public holidays are expensive and cost the government anything from 1billion to 3 billion. It would not be fair to make Eid a public holiday unless you also made other religious celebrations, like Diwali or Rosh Hashanah, a public holiday too. Children and adults are allowed to take Eid off from school or work. No 16

Should Eid be a public holiday? Yes Yes Islam is the second largest religion in the UK and so it would make sense for Eid to be a public holiday. If Eid was made a public holiday then Muslim children wouldn t have to miss learning at school and Muslim adults wouldn t have to miss work to celebrate it. Although it is expensive, it could give people the opportunity to learn more about Islam and join the celebrations. You could say it would bring people closer! 17
