January 21st: Third Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, A number of you are regular or periodic contributors (food items or monetary support) to St. Raphael s Food Pantry, and we appreciate your generosity in this regard. I d like to fill you in on two other lines of support the Pantry receives. One is the First Fridays Community Social Mixer Event, organized by the Sunnyside Kiwanis Club. Usually it s in the party room of Sidetracks Restaurant (45-08 Queens Blvd.), where the Club holds its biweekly meetings. This Kiwanis initiative serves, not only to battle food insecurity by assisting Food Pantries, but also to bring neighbors together. You enjoy your favorite beverage or a couple of snacks, and the proceeds go to the Pantries. For more information on this First Fridays project, visit www.sunnysidefirstfridays.org. and stop by some First Friday to check it out. The other line of support is the Queens Center for Progress. The Center promotes the independence of adults with developmental disabilities, in our situation by involving them in a service project that maximizes their talents and abilities. Each Wednesday and Thursday morning, a group of about a dozen arrive here, supervised by Mari Aucupina, who is one of our CCD (Religious Education) catechists on Sundays. With energy and uplifting spirit, they spend Wednesdays unboxing the foodstuffs and stocking Pantry shelves. On Thursdays, when the Pantry is open, they assist our regular parish volunteers in the various tasks serving those who come for food. Beyond their Pantry jobs, they also do a pick-up of papers and debris around the church grounds, and willingly commit to any other helpful activities that St. Raphael s happens to require on a particular occasion. They regularly comment how they enjoy coming to St. Raphael s, and we, in turn, are recipients of the upbeat vibe they create when they are on site. It s a great blessing for all involved. SECOND COLLECTION TODAY -Father Jerry Jecewiz This week, our second collection will be for Churches in Need (Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America).
