UNFROZEN This 6 week series is based on the movie Frozen! There are many themes found in this movie which are central to our Christian faith. Every kid can relate to characters in the movie and through these different characters, we will be looking at these different themes. We are going to be looking at the theme of fear versus love which runs as a thread throughout the entire movie. Through the story, kids will understand better the concept of fear versus love and ultimately how this relates to our Christian walk where we need to know that perfect love casts out all fear. We ll also be looking at the fact that God is love and the greatest act of love was God sending Jesus as a sacrifice for all of us. This is the love which conquers all and when we know this and believe this, we realize how big a sacrifice it was and that because of this sacrificial love we get to live free. Other themes we will be covering is that of being yourself and accepting others for who they are. We don t need to put on a face or pretend to be anyone we re not. God made us and He made us perfectly. The fact that it is impossible for God to make mistakes, means that nothing about us is a mistake and we need to celebrate our uniqueness. We ll also dig deeper into the themes of friendship and knowing that you are never alone. God blesses us with friends and encourages us to be good friends to others. Along with that, is the knowledge that He is the greatest friend ever and He will always be right by our side through everything. His friendship with us gives us the perfect example of friendship and how we should then treat others who we call our friends. 16 1

BIG GROUP GAMES Week 1 - Frozen T-shirt Race Make sure you do this the night before! Get a few T-shirts (3-5), soak them in water, place wax paper in between the shirts and put them in freezer overnight. Select a few volunteers and see who can unfold the frozen shirt and put it on first! Week 2 - Snow Cup Squirt Make 2 towers with polystyrene cups (you can make them look like snowmen). Select 2 volunteers and give them each a water gun. See who is the first person to knock over all their cups! WATCH MEDIA CLIP 5 Think about your best friend or a very close friend Why do you think you are such good friends? What in your opinion makes a good friendship? Do you think that you are a good friend? FRIENDSHIPS NEED: 1. Time. Time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other's lives. 2. Trust. We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone, without worrying that those secrets will get out! Breaking trust can destroy a friendship. 3. Accountability. Friends encourage & forgive one another Friendship supports during times of struggle. Friends are dependable. In true friendship, unconditional love develops. We love our friends no matter what and we want the best for them. FRIENDSHIPS IN THE BIBLE: Week 3 - Pass the water Every kid gets a cup. Put them into groups of about 5 depending on the size of the group. Have them stand in a line. The first person has the cup that is filled with water. Going over their head, they have to pour the water behind them for the next person to catch in their cup. Have them pour the water, then run and get back in line. After 2 mins, see which group has the most water left in their cups. 2 Genesis 18:17-33 - God shares His intentions with Abraham. Abraham tells God his thoughts and feelings about the situation. They re able to do this because they trust & respect each other. Samuel 20 - David and Jonathan. They cared for each other and had trust and confidence in one another. David was running for his life from Jonathan's father, Saul. Because of the true friendship they shared, David survived Saul's assassination attempts and went on to become one of Israel's greatest kings. John - Jesus and Peter. Peter, afraid for his life after Jesus is taken from the Garden of Gethsemane, denies knowing Jesus (John 18). As He s led away, Jesus looks and Peter and says, "I knew you would deny Me, and I forgive you" (John 21). 15

WEEK 6 - Friends Bottom Line: Being the kind of friend to others as Jesus is to you. Week 4 Put your kids into groups and have them dress up one of their team members as a snow man! Best team wins!! GRADE 0-3 Colour in the picture of Anna and Olaf GRADE 4-7 GIRLS -Using the template, make the 2D castle alongside. Picture Colouring Materials Week 5 - Snow Ball Web Use normal thick tape painter's tape to make a web and have kids throw snow balls at it to see if they can get it to stick. Make your snowballs by scrunching up pieces of white paper. Have them go in groups and see which group can get the most to stick in the 1 minute time limit. Week 6 - Pin the carrot on Olaf Select a few volunteers to try and pin the carrot on Olaf and see who can get it the closest to where it s supposed to be! GRADE 4-7 BOYS -Bring old boxes from home and make castles from them. -Go outside and find any natural things you can use too (leaves, twigs...) 14 3

WEEK 1 - FEAR vs. LOVE Bottom Line: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Tim 1:7 SNOW SLIME! With your hands, mix the ingredients in both bowls together. After a few minutes, you will see the snow slime start to form. In one bowl mix: -2 cups of white craft glue -1 & 1/2 cups of very warm water -Glitter In a second bowl mix: -3/4 teaspoons of borax -1 & 1/3 cups very warm water WATCH MEDIA CLIP 4 Everyone take a big breath and hold it for 3 seconds. -When we took that breath, air filled our lungs. -Was there still any air left in the room? Of course! -If you go into the other room or to the playground will there be air there? (Yes!) Like the air we can't see, God is also there - ALL THE TIME! READ Psalm 139:7-10 and discuss the following questions: -Why would someone want to get away from God? (They want to do something they know is wrong; they want to rule their life rather than allowing God to rule it; maybe they re angry at Him.) -How does it feel to think that God is ALWAYS there seeing EVERYTHING you do. -What do you like about God being everywhere? -Is there anything you don't like about God being everywhere? WHY DO WE FEAR? God knew that we d have fears. In the Bible, the word Fear is mentioned 326 time. Every time, God says, Do not be afraid. How is that even possible? 1. Our world is full of fear. Why shouldn t we be afraid? God says. Isaiah 41:10 2. What if we don t want to be afraid anymore. How can we stop? Isaiah 41:13 3. What happens if we don t give fears to God? Romans 8:15 4. How can we trust Him? Will He really help us with our fears? 1 John 4:18 5. What if we do learn to trust Him? What then? Psalm 34:9 4 13

WEEK 5 - You Are Not Alone Bottom Line: God is ALWAYS with you. WATCH MEDIA CLIP 1 When Anna is taken to the trolls to see what they could do about Elsa s powers, they told them, Fear will be her enemy. Elsa s powers grow and become uncontrollable when she s afraid. Every bad thing that happens is caused by her fear. MELTING OLAF! -Decorate a Marie biscuit to look like Olaf! Marie Biscuits Silver balls WHY does this happen??? They give in to fear and she shuts away. She feels better for a while, but in the end, it causes a lot damage to everyone else. So what s the deal??? The problem isn t Elsa s powers. It is the fact that she never learns to control her fear them her fear. Instead encouraging Elsa to practice using her powers and use them for good, they pretend her powers didn t exist and hope they went away. What s the opposite of fear? -Is it bravery? -No, it s LOVE -The only cure for Anna is an act of true love. What is true love? -Selfless and unconditional love -Read John 15:13 and I John 4:18 -Who is love? (God) Chat with your group: -Are there things you are afraid of? -What do you do when you are afraid of something? -Who should we go to? (God - refer to memory verse) -Should we ignore our fears? (No, we give them to God.) -Pray with them about fears they may have. (Don t dwell too much on the fact she has powers, that s merely an illustration. The key point is that the opposite of fear is love and therefore we need Jesus.) 12 5

WEEK 2 - LOVE CAME DOWN Bottom Line: God sent His son Jesus to be the Saviour of the world. GIRLS Make Ribbon Wands! -Tie ribbon to the end of the stick. -You will need: Thin dowel rods Ribbons (Variety) BOYS Snow Shooters! -Use the cups from the big group game. -Cut the bottom off and attach a balloon over the end of it (You will need to cut the end of the balloon off too so you can fit it over the bottom of the cup) -Aim the cotton balls at targets. (Take the kids outside if you can and choose targets like trees and rocks etc.) -You will need: Polystyrene Cups Balloons Cotton balls 6 WATCH MEDIA CLIP 3 Who here has ever said something like this: - I wish I could be like you or I wish I was as cool as them... -Have you ever wanted to be like someone else? Maybe a friend? A sibling? Or even a famous person? READ PSALM 139:13-14 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Does this mean it is bad to have role models? -Not at all, it s good to look up to people who love Jesus and who live Godly lives, but we need to remember that God chose to make you exactly the way you are. He planned everything about you before you were even born! Who s wanted to have someone else s life because it looked so much better and so perfect compared to yours? -Probably most of us! -The thing is, no one is perfect and no one has the perfect life, so there s no point trying to be anyone else than ourselves! -God created YOU to fulfil a specific purpose and HE needs YOU just as YOU are to do this! Chat about the characters in the movie who are all so different and yet we love them all so much because they aren t afraid to be themselves. Even Elsa; when she realizes she doesn't have to hide who she is, everything just gets better. We need to learn to love ourselves! Look at Olaf - He s goofy, but we love him! Thank God for everything He has given you and for making you YOU! 11

WEEK 4 - BE You Bottom Line: God has made each of one of us perfectly. Be yourself. WATCH MEDIA CLIP 2 Anna sacrifices her safety to save her sister. God did so much more! He sent His son to die on the cross. He was a living sacrifice. We need to be living sacrifices too. This means that we live our lives for Jesus. BUILD OLAF! -Cut out Olaf s different body parts and glue him back together how he is supposed to be! Olaf template Scissors Glue JESUS GAVE EVERYTHING FOR US! He died on the cross so that all our sins could be forgiven. We learnt last week that God is love and because Jesus and God are one, when Jesus came and died on the cross, love came down to us! Jesus came to US! He loved us and knew we needed Him and so He became human and came to earth to die for us. -Who here would die for someone else? -How would you feel if you had to die for something someone else did wrong? That s what Jesus did. He died because of the bad things WE do. Jesus is perfect, it s impossible for Him to sin, but He knew that WE needed a Saviour. Read the following scriptures: (have a competition with you group to see who can find each scripture first). -John 10:11 -John 15:13 -Rom. 5:10 - Rom. 5:18 -Rom. 6:10-1 Cor. 15:3-2 Cor. 5:21 -John 19:30 -Eph. 2:16 -Phil. 2:8 -Col. 1:20 10 7

WEEK 3 - Movie Time The movie will take up the entire service, but if there are kids who get restless, take them outside and maybe have a ball on hand so you can play some football or some other ball sport. Alternatively, maybe there are kids who simply need your time to chat to about things. Use this week to open up some free time for kids to speak about what is on their hearts.
