Documentary Film The Secret Jews of Calabria Tuesday, August 18th at Moderated by Helman Brook Rabbi Barbara Aiello takes us on a challenging journey through the toe of the Italian boot, as she shares the joys and struggles of the b nei anusim, Italians whose families were forced into Christian conversion centuries ago. Obscure alleyways, secret rooms and hidden traditions come to life as locals share family stories of Jewish traditions that for centuries were hiding in plain sight. I m Italian but could I be Jewish too? Rabbi Barbara s journey courageously answers that question that has mystified southern Italians for centuries and offers a glimpse into a chapter of Jewish history that has only recently come to light. Notes from the DVD box of The Secret Jews of Calabria Suggested donation of $10 includes film, discussion and refreshments Bring Your Friends! Bridge for Beginners Round Two! Claude Springer has graciously agreed to begin a new session of his very successful bridge lessons if 4 to 6 people sign up. The dates will be August 19 and 26 and September 2 and 16 at. Please contact the office or Claude if you are interested. The contribution to the temple will be $50 for the four sessions of two hours each. EXTRA, EXTRA..David Aubrey is Back! Save the Dates for Two Films in August: Thursdays, August 13th and August 27th Join us for 2 comedies and David s insightful commentary/discussion. Details to follow Selichot 5775 September 5th Next to Kol Nidre sung on the eve of Yom Kippur, Avinu Malkeinu is no doubt the most remembered of all the melodies of the Days of Awe. Join us Saturday evening, September 5 th at 8 PM for a fascinating program on the origins and development of this well known poem. To be discussed is why, in times when making liturgy gender neutral is popular, we still understand this prayer as speaking to God in terms of Our Father, our King. Our brief Selichot service will begin immediately following the program at 9:15 PM. Let us begin the season of renewal and at-onement together. Page 4
