I was disappointed with our weather at the beginning of the morning last Sunday for our Strawberry Festival, but it improved significantly and was, as it turned out, quite pleasant under the tent. I am glad we had the day we had over the current heat and humidity. Let s begin today by commenting on the Strawberry Festival. I think that everyone involved in it thought it a success. The credit goes to Susan Moran. I know that as she received compliments last week, she replied that all the women and men who aided her also share in the credit. While I agree and acknowledge that everything we do happens because many people step up to assist, I also know that without a guiding hand at the helm things don t happen. Susan was that guiding hand, and it was her planning and creativity that made the event so pleasurable. So, thank you Susan for all your attention and work that made the Strawberry Festival a lovely reality. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the waffles, cut strawberries, set up, and broke down. Many parishioners suggested that we have this event annually. Because it would be held in June when strawberries are in season, we just might link it to the Feast of Saints Peter & Paul and use it as a means to celebrate our parish which is entrusted to the great Apostle s patronage. With the close of the fiscal year, the Annual Catholic Appeal came to a close, too. Bishop Caggiano wrote to us to thank us for reaching our goal and for our generosity. Our participation dropped quite a bit this year which was both unusual and disappointing to see. We did receive a large contribution from an individual which brought us to our goal and beyond. We thank the donor for her generosity to the works of the diocese and to our parish. Our fiscal year ended, too, of course. When everything is reconciled later this month, I will let you know how we made out this fiscal year and provide you with a summary. I can give you this sneak preview: we ended in the black but not by a wide margin. Our Finance Committee worked hard on analyzing both the income and expenditures for 2017-18 while preparing this year s budget which we had to submit to the diocese on June 1. We needed to make adjustments based on the projection of less revenue from the Offertory. I should pass on a summary of that to you, too, at the same time. While on the topic of income and expenditures, I always like to tell you when we have crossed a threshold with regard to the parking lot mortgage. We had one of those moments in June. As of our most recent payment, we dropped below $600,000. Our current balance is $593,032. I will really send up a cheer when we cross the next threshold. When I started here twelve years ago, we were at approximately 1.1 million. Have a happy Independence Day. -Fr. Mecca
