THE MEANING OF LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU We are all one and connected energetically and at the soul level. No matter where you live on the planet, you are affected at some level by the chaos, violence and political upheaval that is occurring all around the globe. We are all experiencing the effects of climate change which can be quite unsettling to say the least. In these uncertain times of great change, rest assured that the old paradigms and structures are breaking down to make way for the new ~ breakdown is break through. And yet all of this makes it quite challenging to hold a space of stability and peace within. Allow yourself to take advantage of the support available to us all from the ancient traditions and wisdom of the ages in the form of the Peace Mantra, Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. This is a powerful mantra that supports our spiritual evolution and unfolding. It is also a blessing of peace upon the world much needed at this time. Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu is a Sanskrit mantra that means: May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. Chanting this mantra inspires us to open our hearts and extend our light outward in a prayer of love and peace to the world and everyone in it. Chanting the Peace Mantra lifts us out of our egoic, mental mind, lower self, and its attendant limited view of the world and our place in it, to a more expanded state of conscious connection. The Peace Mantra reminds us at a very visceral level that we are one with the Universe and that in raising our vibration, we help to raise the vibration of all. Lokah Samastah Sukino Bhavantu is a Sanskrit prayer that has been used for centuries to call in enhanced states of compassion and peace, personally and collectively. Its message is akin to the biblical Do unto others as you would have them do unto you and yet is even more powerful in that this ancient mantra goes a step further than the action-reaction of that verse. This Sanskrit prayer affirms that all beings everywhere are well, happy and free and that your words, actions, deeds and very existence are a part of that new, blessed, peaceful and loving paradigm.
THE POWER OF CHANTING A MANTRA 108 TIMES Mantras are an effective way to balance and enhance certain vibrations. Chanting a mantra can balance and harmonize any negative effects from planetary aspects. It can also be used to enhance the positive effects from those aspects. The number 108 is considered sacred according to many traditions, and chanting a mantra 108 times is believed to amplify the power of the mantra. Why 108 repetitions? There are many different explanations as to the significance of chanting a mantra 108 times, including the following: Vedic Tradition: Hindu astronomy has its origins in the Vedas and looks to the configuration of the nine planets known as Navagrahas. These celestial planetary bodies are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Buddha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node), and Ketu (South Lunar Node). These nine planetary bodies have great significance in Vedic astrology. Vedic (or Hindu) astrologers draw the birth charts of individuals based upon the planetary positions at the moment of birth. Depending upon that planetary configuration in the astrological chart at any given time, the planets exert positive or negative influence upon people and their destinies. There are also 12 different houses affecting these 9 planets. When the planetary constellations are not optimal, astrologers recommend action to pacify the planets and ward off their negative influence. Chanting is one of the ways this can be done. Multiplying the number of planets "9" by the number of houses "12" brings you to 108, the number considered effective to balance these negative planetary influences.
THE POWER OF CHANTING A MANTRA 108 TIMES Sanskrit Tradition: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each number has a masculine (Shiva) and a feminine (Shakti) aspect. It is believed that a sacred number is created when you multiply the number 54 x 2 to reflect both the Shiva and Shakti aspects. Hence 108. Sacred Geometry: According to the sacred geometric configuration known as Sri Yantra, a marmas, or marmastanas, is formed when three energetic lines intersect. In the human body, there are 54 marmas. Each marmas has both a Shiva (masculine) and Shakti (feminine) aspect. So again 108 appears when you multiply the number of marmas (54) by the 2 aspects of Shiva and Shakti. Heart Chakra Nadis: There are 108 main energy lines or nadis that radiate from the heart chakra. Tapping into the sacred number of the nadis in the heart chakra is believed to amplify the effects of chanting. Relationship of the Sun and Earth: The sacred number 108 is drawn from the fact that the diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. Krishna Tradition: It is believed that there were 108 gopis or maidservants of Krishna. Tantric Tradition: There are 108 Tantric texts. Ancient texts reveal that the human soul, the Atman, passes through 108 different stages on its path to enlightenment.
THE POWER OF CHANTING A MANTRA 108 TIMES Logically there is no actual proof or scientific answer to why 108 repetitions of a mantra enhances its power. Ancient mystics believed the number 108 to be sacred and believed it to be in sync with the rhythms of time and space. Proof aside, this is more a matter for faith and trust. When we chant a mantra 108 times, we honor and salute the order of the Universe and align our intentions to Source energy and Divine will. Invoking the sacred number 108 when we chant harmonizes our vibration with the natural inherent pulse and vibration of all of creation. It is for this reason that we chant mantras at least 108 times. Doing so raises your vibration and opens you to the flow of abundance, peace and love.
