THE WORD FIRST LESSON Genesis 2:18-24 18 The LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man. 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. PSALM OF THE DAY (9:15) Psalm 139b tune 374 ALL: O Lord, you ve searched and you ve known me, know when I sit and rise; And you perceive my thoughts from far, e en to the farthest skies. For you did form my inmost parts; my life created whole; You knit me in my mother s womb and formed my very soul. Men: I praise you, for I m fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful to me on them my mind is stayed. Women: My frame was known to you and was not hidden from your sight, When I was made in secret depths; wrought by you far from light. 5

ALL: Your eyes there saw my unformed frame, and all the days for me Were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious are your thoughts to me, O God, how vast the sum! Were I to count them, more than grains of sand they would become. PSALM 139b (sung the cantor 8, 10:30) You Have Searched Me Arr. Kiran Young Wimberly You have searched me and know me, holy Lord; know when I sit and rise. You re acquainted with my ways, where I go, and where I lie. For your formed my inmost being within my mother s womb; When I dwelt within that secret place, I was not hid from you. You ordained that the days before me be filled with love and grace, Made me beautiful and wonderful; for this I give you praise. How precious is your ev ry thought, how vast the sum of them! Though I try to count them, they are more than ev ry grain of sand. Search me, O God, and know my heart; know ev ry anxious thought, And Lead me on the path of your everlasting way. PSALM PRAYER P: Almighty Father, your creation is beyond description and your power beyond measuring. In your wisdom and love you knit us together in our mothers wombs and counted out days for our use. May our praise answer for your goodness; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. SECOND LESSON Ephesians 5:21-6:1-4 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 6

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church 30 for we are members of his body. 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. 32 This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. 6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. ANTHEM (9:15 only) This Is My Father s World Franklin L. Sheppard SEASONAL RESPONSE P: Give thanks to the Lord; call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function GOSPEL Mark 10:2-16 2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? 3 What did Moses command you? he replied. 4 They said, Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away. 5 It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law, Jesus replied. 6 But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. 10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery. 7

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. THANK OFFERING Moved by God s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him. MUSICAL OFFERING (8:00) My Faith Looks Up to Thee arr. Kevin McChesney 9

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HYMN Love Is the Gracious Gift 505 PRAYERS P: Let us pray. Almighty God, in your bountiful goodness keep us safe from every evil of body and soul. Make us ready, with cheerful hearts, to do whatever pleases you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 10

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. BLESSING 11
