Sesquicentennial UPDATE The Sesquicentennial Committee is pleased to announce that our third focus in the celebration of our yearlong 150 th anniversary celebration is to spend the end of May and month of June learning about and intentionally supporting mission work that takes place at our church. Our church members continually find ways to offer support here in Tupelo with initiatives like Helping Hands, Habitat for Humanity, and Weekend Backpack, and we have taken active roles in missions around the world through our mission trips to the Mississippi Delta, Mexico, Africa, Costa Rica, and other locations. We are excited to share that we will culminate our focus on missions this year with a commissioning service for the mission trip to Honduras on Sunday, June 26. We challenge you during the end of May and beginning of June to take an active role in one of the mission initiatives at our church, and we invite you to make a priority of attending the church service on Sunday, June 26 as we recognize the Honduras mission trip team as a part of our sesquicentennial celebration. Fun Facts: Did you know that the vision of Habitat for Humanity is a world where everyone has a decent place to live? Luther Millsaps, a member of our church who passed away in 2010, began trying to organize Habitat for Humanity in 1982 out of Sunday school classrooms, and the actual chapter of Northeast Mississippi Habitat for Humanity began in 1984. Since then our church has endeavored to fulfill the mission of Habitat for Humanity : Seeking to put God s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. First United Methodist Church has sponsored around 30 Habitat houses, helping bring hope to families in Tupelo. In September of 2015, FUMC sponsored a Blitz Build which was a commitment to complete the building of a house in a week s time. We had over 200 individuals from FUMC volunteer on the construction of a house on Park Street for the Crayton family putting in well over 800 volunteer hours. Because of the success of this project last year, our church has committed to another Blitz Build, for another deserving family, in the fall of 2016. The Blitz is a wonderful way to connect with our church family as well as others in the community, as we all work as a team to provide safe, affordable housing to members of our community. Skill as a builder is not a requirement, although it is nice to have a few of those skilled in construction. Please be on the look out for information this fall about how to get involved. Posters for sale: Posters of the beautiful artwork of the church for the Sesquicentennial Celebration are now for sale! The cost is $30 and checks can be made out to FUMC, for 150th celebration.
