Page 2 Volume 3, Issue 2 Lubbock Lodge #1392 The Charge: A Message From the East Worshipful Master James Urban Brethren we are nearing some very important events I would like all brethren to be aware of. March 3-7. We need to hammer out these details and do something for education in our community. Lastly, remember that our DDGM will be visiting us in March, so please be prepared. First, remember that at our February stated meeting, we will be discussing the Community Builder Award as well as what we want to do for Public Schools Week, which is Second, we will be rescheduling our fish Fryday to raise funds for our scholarships. The grand object of Masonry is to promote the happiness of the human race A Message From the West - Endowed Memberships Senior Warden Glenn Fant As you are probably already aware, resolution 12 passed in Grand Lodge, which allows every endowed member to increase the value of his endowed membership by increments of $100. Many endowed members have been making generous donations to the lodge to make up for the poor interest rate & returns our endowment investments earn each year. If you are a current endowed mem- ber I want to encourage you to invest that same money in your endowment now. The Lodge needs funds for building and roof repairs, and money for numerous other worthy projects. This investment in your endowment will continue to help the lodge even after you are gone, and they will need the money even more by then. Increase your endowment as much as possible at a rate you can afford, to help your lodge. If you are considering buying an endowed membership, invest enough to pay your annual dues each year, or plan to increase it every year enough to reach that goal in the future. The lodge is grateful for all the hard work you do in our fund raising activities, and we hope to see you at our next fish fry. From the South Jurisprudence and Scattershots Junior Warden Kevin Rush Scattershooting, wondering how many people know of the 7P s? Let s talk dues! A topic on the boards of myfreemasonry.com: When is a brother in arrears automatically suspended? January or June? Such a suspension would take effect at midnight, June 23rd. (Art. 319). So, if you are under the GLOT and not paid up in February. and visit a lodge in Texas you have not been to before and don't know anyone, would you be granted visitation or would you be told you need to get your dues card current.? You need a current dues card. Art. 380. (416). Good Standing. Upon notification to the Worshipful Master, and at his discretion, a member of a Lodge under the jurisdiction of this Grand Lodge may visit any Texas Masonic Lodge working under this jurisdiction without the avouchment and or examination process providing that he is in good standing and presents a receipt from his Lodge showing that his dues are current at the time of said visitation along with a photo identification; except in cases provided for in Art. 382. Sojourning Masons from other jurisdictions must possess a current dues card and shall be vouched for or examined in accordance with Art. 381. Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

Volume 3, Issue 2 Lubbock Lodge #1392 Page 3 From the Secretary Jerry Hendrick Taking Care of Business JUST A REMINDER THAT IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID YOUR DUES, THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!!!! IF YOU NEED TO MAKE SPECIAL AR- RANGEMENTS TO PAY YOUR DUES PLEASE CON- TACT ME SO THAT WE CAN WORK SOMETHING OUT. COST OF THIS YEARS DUES IS $55.00. ENDOWED MEMBERSHIPS For those of you who wish to leave a legacy to the Lodge, you might thing about purchasing an Endowed Membership. Then- Cost is $500.00. The application is sent to Grand Lodge and they will process it and send back a certificate which can be displayed along side those that have already been purchased. An endowment is a way have ensuring that you will not forget to pay your annual dues. So for further details please contact the Secretary. From the Senior Deacon John Rosser Visiting Brothers & Prospects At the Stated meeting in January we had the following visitors: Bob Clemmons, PM, Rolan Pirtle and James Scott from Yellowhouse Lodge, #841. In Masonry, one question that we as a fraternity are facing is how to maintain the interest of our newer members. This is by no means a new question or a new problem. A look back at the minutes of Masonic Lodge meetings from a hundred years ago shows that this is a challenge faced by every generation of Freemasons. Unfortunately, that same look back shows that what worked in the past will not necessarily work now. Society changes and we have to change along with it if we are to remain pertinent to the members of our Craft. Start thinking about what you want to do as a leader in the next masonic year. Do you want to be an officer? Let the current wardens know of your desires. Let us endeavor so to live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry. From the Senior Steward Brandon Gould Food, Flowers & Frolic Brethren, here's to hoping this new year has treated you well and hope you and yours have found many blessings. I want to thank everyone for all the hard work that has gone in to maintaining the lodge and I hope everyone has enjoyed the meals that I have brought for you all. This month we will be enjoying fried chicken and sides in hopes that we will all have full bellies for the program that is planned. Again, I thank you all for the opportunity to serve the lodge as senior warden and look forward to serving the lodge for my remaining time in the position as well as any future positions I may be allotted. I hope to see you all at the stated meeting as we come together in brotherly love! As always, this poor steward needs your help - Please contribute to the cause and put a few dollars in the jar. Upcoming Menu for February: Fried Chicken! Take everything you like seriously, except yourselves.

Page 4 Volume 3, Issue 2 Lubbock Lodge #1392 Masonic Labor con t from Page 1 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The kits were put together at the Scottish Rite in Lubbock on January 16, after having Pizza provided by the Masonic Home and School. Approximately 58 Lodge members and their wives and friends + 20 of the Lubbock Youth Leadership Association helped put the kits together in about 1 Hour. What a crew! I would like to take this opportunity to extend my whole hearted thanks to all who came together to make this happen. Without your help none of this could have been achieved. I am looking forward to next year, and hopefully add some new lodges and schools. This program makes it possible to provide kids with a good start towards dental health. The great thing about this program is it crosses all economic lines and provides the kids with everything they need. They are really excited when they receive their kits and know it just for them. Masonic Labor Brother Benjamin Franklin Masonic labor is purely a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and silver will be disappointed. The wages of a Mason are earned and paid in their dealings with one another; sympathy that begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness, helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. His stories have inspired over 200 films and 400 fan clubs worldwide. Even people who have never read a Sherlock Holmes story know who Holmes is. From 1897 to 1907 Doyle and his family lived at a home he named Undershaw where he wrote some of his most memorable work and celebrated some of his biggest accomplishments. Undershaw, designed by Doyle himself, was an impressive home with a two-story entrance hall, eleven bedrooms and dressing rooms, a dining room that could seat 30, and it even had a power plant to provide electricity to the house. Bro. Doyle was a member of Phoenix Lodge No. 257 during part of the time he lived at Undershaw. He received his knighthood while living there, and wrote more than 15 of the 56 Sherlock Holmes stories including the famous Hound of the Baskervilles. J. M. Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan, and Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, were frequent guests. Doyle formed the Undershaw Rifle Club for training sessions to make marksmen of English men. Others copied the idea, resulting in the British Army welcoming trained marksmen at the start of WWI. Undershaw now stands neglected and vandalized, owned by a developer whose plans for Undershaw involve destroying the historic value of Sir Conan Doyle s home and legacy. Sadly, last June permission was granted for this development. The Undershaw Preservation Trust was formed to save Undershaw and perhaps make it into a museum. The Trust hopes to bring public awareness to the plight of Undershaw through their website (www.saveundershaw.com), worldwide representatives, and support from prominent authors and actors, including Mark Gatiss, actor and cocreator of the BBC Sherlock TV series, and who is patron and sponsor of the Trust. Visit the website and see how you can help. Source: Jacquelynn Morris/ Scottishrite.org Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.

This Month s Brothers & Birthdays Allen Jolly 2/1 Kenneth Luberger 2/2 Baha Tulu Tanju 2/4 Paul Bartlett 2/11 The Quarry: Masonry & Texas Education By Bro. Bob Clemmons In March of each year, the Masons of Texas pause to celebrate and pay tribute to our public school system and relish the fact that Freemasonry played a large role in the development of free public education for all Texans. This year will be no different. In 1845, The Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas passed a resolution setting aside ten percent of Heath Morgan 2/15 William Boone 2/16 Toby Calhoun 2/17 Jerry Moen 2/22 its total revenue for education. The emphasis placed on Public Schools Week each March is intended to inform the general public of the debt of gratitude Masons owe their schools, teachers and administrators. Many lodges and other Masonic bodies provide scholarships that enable many deserving students to attend college, and these scholarships have no restrictions as to race, color or creed. Texas Masonry is justly proud of its contributions to Texas education and will contin- John Rosser 2/23 Alton W. Herring 2/24 Jerry Hendrick 2/28 ue to be a major force in public education in general. Join in the preparations this month with Lubbock Masonic Lodge for this year s celebration of Masonry and Texas Education March 3-7 The things a man has to have are hope and confidence in himself against odds, and sometimes he needs somebody, his pal or his mother or his wife or God, to give him that confidence. He's got to have some inner standards worth fighting for or there won't be any way to bring him into conflict. And he must be ready to choose death before dishonor without making too much song and dance about it. That's all there is to it. E-Mail: info@lubbockmasoniclodge.org
