HOLY FAMILY REGIONAL SCHOOL JESUS CHRIST IS THE REASON FOR OUR SCHOOL Tuesday, November 21, 2017 Issue 6 Dear Parents, We have so much to be thankful for at Holy Family Regional School! We are thankful to be able to share our love for God and learn about our faith every day. Our children are privileged to pray to God and tell him things they want him to know, to ask for things they need, to pray for others and to especially say thank you every day. We are blessed that the Holy Spirit flows through our halls and guides each of us; children, teachers, parents, and administrators every day! As I reflect on the past few months, I am so grateful for our generous community. Our children continue to reach out to others in need. We have made cards to lift the spirits of the elderly and children in the hospital, we collected over a thousand pounds of food for needy families serviced through Lighthouse, and after Thanksgiving, we will begin our Christmas Outreach program collecting baby items for the young mothers at Gianna House, as well as continued donations for those affected by the recent natural disasters. It is by your example as parents, that our children have learned the practice of reaching out to others. I am also grateful for the many families who have offered to become involved in our school through the various volunteer opportunities. We have hundreds of families who have made the commitment to better our school programs and enrichments by sharing the gift of time and talent. If you have not fulfilled your 20 hour commitment on the VIP, it is not too late! Please visit the school website to see where you can help. The Advancement Team continues to make amazing plans for this year s Winter Wonderland Gala which will be held on February 10th at Cherry Creek Golf Club. It will be an event that you will not want to miss! In this issue of the FUNdamentals, you will find information about the many sponsorships that are available. These sponsorships come with great advertising potential, including having your company logo displayed on our website for the entire year. Be sure to contact Jennifer Schmitz in the Advancement Office for more information. Thanksgiving is a good time for all of us to reflect on our blessings, and to continue to use our many gifts to benefit not only our school community, but also our broader community and world. May your time with family and friends be joyful and blessed. Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely in Christ, Mr. Jon Myers Principal

Academic Excellence Authors in April Update Middle School Author Jennifer Nielsen This month we are thrilled to bring you more information about your 2018 Authors in April author, Jennifer Nielsen, as well as information about a great holiday gift idea - gift certificates for our banquet which will be held Monday, April 23 rd, 2018. A former speech teacher, theater director, and door-to-door pollster (briefly), Jennifer Nielsen lives in Utah with her husband, three children, and a dog that won t play fetch. She loves chocolate, old books, and lazy days in the mountains. As far back as Jennifer can remember, she has shared her brain with imaginary characters. She figures it s okay if she talks to them as she s working on her stories, as long as they don t start talking back! Her first attempt at a full-length story was in 6th grade. But she abandoned the manuscript when a local locksmith halted her research on picking locks. As a child, Mrs. Nielsen loved the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown series, but her favorite books were The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We are looking forward to meeting her in the spring! An annual highlight of Authors in April week is our banquet. Held Monday evening the week the authors are visiting, the community comes together to hear the four authors give their adult presentations. These often include stories of how they started their writing careers or how a book or teacher influenced them as a child. Here is some feedback we got from Sara Sullivan, teacher at Van Hoosen, about last year s banquet, The food was yummy, the company was even better, and the authors were simply amazing. One of the most inspiring messages that I took away was the impact that teachers and librarians had on all of the authors. I left feeling so moved and empowered. I hope to guide my students toward their passion the same way that their educators did. Along with being an inspirational evening, it is also Authors in April s biggest fundraiser. If this sounds like something you or a friend might be interested in, consider buying a gift certificate now to use as a holiday gift! High school students and adults are welcome to attend. The gift certificates are $45 each. Contact sixth grade homeroom teacher, Mrs. Bridget Hondzinski, for more information.

What are you thankful for? Have you taken time to recognize what you already have, before asking for more? In your prayers do you pray for what you want, or pray to have revealed to you what God wants? As you gather tomorrow, or this weekend, with family and friends, take time to really be present with each person you are with. Listen intently and thank God for them in your life perhaps you will even silently say a prayer for them. As you sit at your table of bounty, take a moment and think about those who don t have much or anything to eat. Offer a pray for those who are in need. If there are people you will encounter, this day of thanks, whom maybe you struggle with, or have experienced conflict, extend a sign of peace. Be hopeful that your relationship will be healed, show your love in simple ways. If you will be missing a family member or friend, know that you are in my prayers. God is with you always, and, if you let Him, He will offer you comfort and peace. May you feel God s presence always, but especially in the next few days as we say thank you for many things especially God s saving love and grace. God bless you as we begin a wonderful holiday season! Kim Myers, Campus Minister Quiet please! Here is a little food for thought The students are asked to approach the house of the Lord with quiet reverence as they prepare their hearts and minds for Mass. Let us all be role models for each other as we support the teaching of our Holy Father! Pope: No 'chit-chat' before Mass Prepare to encounter the Lord with silent prayer, he tells general audience Friday, November 17, 2017 Catholic News Agency - Catholic News Agency VATICAN CITY At his weekly general audience Nov. 15, Pope Francis called out the common habit of chatting with people around you before Mass, stressing that this is a time for silent prayer, when we prepare our hearts for an encounter with the Lord.

When we go to Mass, maybe we arrive five minutes before, and we start to chit-chat with those in front of us, the pope said. However, it is not a moment for chit-chat. It is a moment of silence for preparing ourselves for dialogue, a time for the heart to collect itself in order to prepare for the encounter with Jesus, he said, adding that silence is so important. Photographer: L'Osservatore Romano Pope Francis celebrates morning Mass in Santa Marta. As part of a series of Wednesday teachings on the Eucharist, he said Nov. 15 at his general audience that the time before the start of Mass should be spent in silent prayer, not "chit-chat" with others. Continuing his new catechesis on the Eucharist, the pope recalled his message the week prior, that the Mass is not a show, but a place where we encounter the Lord. In this encounter, he said, silence is what prepares us and accompanies us. But to really understand this, first we have to answer a question, he said. And that is: What is prayer? Prayer is, first and foremost dialogue, personal relationship with God, he said. And in prayer, just like in any dialogue, it needs moments of silence together with Jesus. This, he said, is because it is only in the mysterious silence of God that his Word can resound in our heart. Francis explained that to pray is not difficult, and is something that Jesus himself taught us to do first of all by example, when in the Gospels he withdraws to a secluded place to pray. And second, he teaches us again when he tells his disciples that the first word in knowing how to pray is Father. This is so simple, the pope said. So we have to learn, Father. Then, we must take on the attitude of a small child before his or her parents. One full of trust and confidence, knowing that God remembers you and takes care of you, he said. The second attitude we should take is one of childlike surprise and wonder. The child, he said, always asks a thousand questions because he wants to discover the world; in our relationship with the Lord, in prayer, wonder, he said, telling pilgrims to open the heart to wonder. When it comes to prayer, he noted that often we are busy with many different activities or projects and say we don t have time. We lose sight of what is fundamental: our life of the heart, our spiritual life, our life of prayer with the Lord. However, Jesus surprises us in truth by loving us and calling us even in our weaknesses, he said, adding that just as Christ called his disciples, he also calls us to him at each Mass. This is therefore the greatest grace: to be able to experience the Mass, the Eucharist. It is the privileged moment to be with Jesus, and through Him with God and his brothers.
