December 9-10, 2017 Waiting for the king. Luke 1-2 (Jesus Storybook Bible: Pg. 176) The long-awaited king arrives. First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids. As we get closer to Christmas, build up excitement for Jesus birth with kids! Remind them of who he is, and how amazing it was when he came to rescue the world! Next 10 minutes: Connect Time Next 20 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack, Small Group, Storytime As kids leave, remind them to act out their favorite part of today s story about the King. Today, we ll continue to hear about the long-awaited arrival of our Rescuer, Jesus!

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (When you get the 10-minute warning from the presenter, have children clean up and go sit on the rug.) We re going to hear more about the story of our Rescuer Jesus! God sends an angel to a woman named Mary, telling her that she will be The Rescuer s mom! Let s pretend to rock a baby. (Let kids respond). Who is the Rescuer? (JESUS!) At first Mary is a little scared, can you show me your scared face? (Let kids respond). But then she was so happy! Now show me your happy face! (Let kids respond). Mary and her husband Joseph had to go to where Joseph was from, and it was very far away. Let s get up and walk in place. (Let kids respond and keep walking for awhile). I bet they got tired, what do you think?! Now we are going to go into the big room to hear the rest of the story! Are you excited? Let s Line Up! Remember to call out something (ie. all the girls line up, etc ) to have only a few people line up at a time to avoid running and accidents. While in line, remind kids that they are going to sit on the carpet, to put on their listening ears, and put a bubble in their mouth!

We re watching a special Christmas music video at the end of today s lesson. You can choose to have kids sit and watch it like a regular video, or have them stand up and worship actively. Here s today s story video: Saddleback Kids / Jesus is Born: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v365 6G6tWuI&index=25&list=PL5aPdmniG3 y_n7hxektv4qqniece-p6ws Love Crashed into the World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrt8 RGwLVDw WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review the beginning of God s story and rescue plan. Notes: *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. Video: HOPS have fun! Say: (Holding up the Bible.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible. ) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. It shows us how He rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. Say: In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. He created the sun and the moon, the water and the land, the plants and the animals, and people like you and me! Everything was good. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) Say: But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Say: Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve, and you and me, could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!)

WAITING FOR THE KING Main Goal: See how much God s family wanted their rescuer to come! MARY AND JOSEPH Main Goal: Understand how God chose Mary and Joseph to help bring Jesus into the world. JESUS IS BORN! Main Goal: See how people celebrated Jesus birth! Say: A LONG time before our rescuer came, God sent angels to give a special message to the world. Angels are God s messenger warriors. They announced that one day.the rescuer, a king, would be born (Ask kids to say A King will be born! ) Say: The people waited and waited. They became impatient and began to cry, Where is our king that God promised? When will he come and rescue us? And then, finally, God sent an angel to deliver a message! (Image: Mary.) God sent this angel to a woman named Mary. Can you say, Mary? (Let kids respond.) The angel told her, Jesus is coming! (Ask kids to say Jesus is coming! as loud as they can.) God chose Mary to be Jesus mom (pretend to rock a baby). Mary was scared at first, but then, she was so excited! (Act really excited & happy!) (Image: Joseph.) Mary was going to marry a guy named Joseph. Can you say, Joseph? (Let kids respond.) At first, he didn t believe that Jesus was really coming. Can you give me a sad face? (Let kids respond.) But then, God showed Joseph that Jesus was real, and he was on his way! So Joseph and Mary got married, and got ready to bring Jesus into the world. Say: When Mary was about to give birth, they had to travel a loooong way. Let s all stand and pretend to walk! (Walk in place.) When they finally got to their hometown, it was so crowded, that there was no place to sleep! Say, Oh no! Say: After looking at every possible place, they found a place to stay the night outside, with lots of smelly animals! But then, finally, at long last, Jesus was born! Let s watch a video, and see how it happened! Video: Saddleback Kids / The Story of Christmas (Jesus is Born) Say: What an amazing story! When Jesus was born, angels told shepherds in the field that Jesus, the king, was finally here. The shepherds danced, sang and worshipped! After that, wise men came from faaaar away to worship Jesus, and give him gifts! Say: The shepherds were SO excited, that they ran to see baby Jesus as fast as they could!

JESUS IS BORN! Main Goal: See how people celebrated Jesus birth! WRAP UP AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Help kids interact through prayer and worship! Say: Everybody crowded around Jesus, and worshipped him as their Rescuer. They were so excited that he was finally here, as little baby Jesus! Ask: Are YOU all excited that God sent Jesus to the world? (Let kids respond.) Me too. And guess what? We get to celebrate Jesus birthday every year, at Christmas! Let s pray right now, and tell Jesus how glad we are that he came to rescue us. Say: Now let s watch a special music video that shows how people everywhere celebrated baby Jesus! Music Video: Love Crashed into the World Say: Now let s pray to Jesus, and tell him how much we love him! Pray (Breaking it into small, repeatable phrases): Dear Jesus. We re so happy that you came to rescue us. We love to celebrate you. Aaaa-men! Set up worship: Let s celebrate Jesus some more with singing and dancing! Everybody stand, and let s worship God! Music Video: I Just Want to Thank You Music Video: Jesus Loves Me

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that people waited for the king (Jesus) and (2) rejoice that the king has come! Why? God s Rescuer changed EVERYTHING. We want to build kids excitement as Christmas gets closer and closer! Tip: Today s images have text printed on the back; use it as you tell the story during the Small Group activity! REVIEW THE STORY 1. Who were people waiting for? (The king/rescuer Jesus!) 2. Who did God choose to be Jesus mom? (Mary.) 3. Where was baby Jesus born? (Outside with animals.) 4. Who appeared in the sky to tell the shepherds that Jesus was born? (Angels.) 5. What did the shepherds do when they heard the king had come? (They rejoiced and jumped for joy! They ran to see Jesus and tell everybody the good news!) 6. Who followed a star and brought gifts to Jesus, to worship him? (The wise men.) 7. When do we celebrate Jesus birth? (Christmas!) MAKE IT PERSONAL Hold up the following images while retelling the story, and whenever kids hear the word, Jesus, they should clap/cheer and yell, Yay! (Make sure that whenever you say Jesus name, you emphasize the word and give kids a few seconds to respond): (Image: Angels.) The angels told Mary that Jesus was coming! (Image: Mary and Joseph.) Mary and Joseph had to travel a long way. (Image: Jesus in a manger.) Jesus was born outside with the animals. (Image: The shepherds.) The angels told the shepherds that Jesus was here. They celebrated, and told everybody else! (Image: The wise men.) The wise men followed a star to find Jesus, and brought him gifts. (Image: Everybody worships.) Everyone worshipped Jesus as their new king! Give each kid a story card to take home.

Extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet. After that, play a Nativity game! Make a circle. Choose one person to be the leader (be the leader first to show kids how it s done). The leader names an animal that might have been at the place Jesus was born and then everybody imitates that animal! Be as loud and crazy as you want. Do sounds, movements, or both! Read the story He s Here in The Jesus Storybook Bible on Page 176!
