Committee 7 pm Saturday, 09/01/12: Yard sale items for LDF to be unloaded after 5:30 pm Mass. Helpers needed!!!! Featured this week August 27: Memorial: St. Monica (331-387): St. Monica (a Christian) was married to Patricius (a pagan) at an early age. Patricius was a public official in the city of Tagaste (in modern Algeria). Monica s married life was unhappy, especially as her almsgiving & prayer annoyed her husband. They had three children, for whom Patricius would not permit baptism. However, one of these children turned out to be the famous saint, Augustine. (Patricius eventually became a Christian, but died shortly thereafter). August 28: Memorial: St. Augustine, Bishop & Doctor of the Church (354-430): Augustine, still a pagan like his father Patricius, was sent to Carthage in North Africa to pursue his studies. There he lived an immoral life. Fortunately, Augustine traveled to Rome, where he met St. Ambrose. St. Ambrose converted Augustine & the rest is history. He became a priest in 391 & a little later became Bishop of Hippo. Augustine wrote over 100 books including Confessions & City of God. His influence on theology, both Catholic & Protestant, is unquestionable! Consequently, Augustine was named Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1298.
