FEBRUARY 3/4, 2018 ST ANDREW RC CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME To those who suffer, words (and actions flowing from them) really do matter In today s readings, God hears suffering and heals the brokenhearted That is what Jesus was about in his ministry That is what the disciples and all his followers have always been about That is what we, too, are called to be doing Hearing, preaching and living the Gospel are ultimately about life, love and healing There are as many ways to do this as there are committed Christians THE READINGS JOB 7:1-4, 6-7: Job laments and questions his suffering 1CORINTHIANS 9:16-19, 22-23: Paul s mission is to preach the Gospel MARK 1:29-39: Jesus preaches and drives out demons -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10th, 2018 5:00 PM Mass Priest Fr Manuel Lector J Kane Zaykowski EM s R McNamara, L Salamone, R Salamone QMHR 4:00-4:45 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11th, 2018 8:30 AM Mass Priest Fr Manuel Lector M Johnsen EM s R Cipolla, V Cipolla, M Lane 10:00 AM Mass Priest Fr Manuel Lector Rel Ed EM s M Griffin, L Koehne, M Reiser 11:30 AM Mass Priest Fr Manuel Lector D Carbone EM s J Dagney, R Kiselyak, V Schiavoni HAMPTON CARE CENTER SCHEDULE FOR EM S FEBRUARY 4th M Johnsen FEBRUARY 11th M Lane & R Cipolla Moving? FEBRUARY 3/4, 2018 ST ANDREW RC CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr Peter s Desk Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: We hear, in our First Reading on this Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Job lamenting his sleepless nights and life of misery He is hopeless, desperate to see happiness but doubting whether he ever will Many in our church will understand Job s restlessness At times, we all feel afraid and sometimes even hopeless but as people of God we trust that God s rest and peace will overcome our worries and we hope in the beautiful dawn that follows In our Second Reading, we hear that to St Paul, the Gospel is everything Paul preaches the Gospel out of an obligation that comes from God and for his free proclamation of the Gospel, Paul s free reward is a life of grace in Christ We might say that Paul is single-minded about the Gospel and people s conversion to it Our Gospel today begins on the same Sabbath day as last Sunday s Gospel, in which Jesus taught in the synagogue In today s Gospel, Jesus heals Simon s mother-in-law by a simple gesture of taking her hand and helping her up She immediately rises and serves her guests She may not have realized it, but she was providing an example to her son-in-law and his companions She is showing what it means to be a disciple of Jesus The call to be Jesus disciples the call to serve My brothers and sisters in Christ, our readings today progress from despair to hope Undoubtedly, we can picture ourselves in both situation Jesus tells us in the Gospel of St John to have faith and trust in him When we are in despair, let us remind ourselves of the healing grace of Jesus He is always knocking on our door, are we going to open up and let him in? God Bless You All, Fr Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection Like St Paul in the second reading, the good steward can say, I do all that I do for the sake of the Gospel in the hope of having a share in its blessings Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who use their gifts of healing ad forgiveness to help repair relationships in families beset with divorce, death, dysfunction or abuse Parish Sacrificial Giving Summary Weekly goal for 1/28/18- $6,40000 Sunday Collection for 1/28/18-$3,24500 Votive Candles for 1/28/18- $6700 Faith Direct Weekly Donations - $1,05000 Total for 1/28/18-$4,36200 PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Most recently: Andrea Guidici, Nora Cosgrove, Joseph Carbone, Barbara King, Gloria Bennedetto, Tom Buttonow, Al Altschaeffl, Rachel Brown, Joan Griffin, Larry Darcey, Donald Kelly, Rita A Smith, Charlie & Kathy Greene, Anita Brown, Kathy Delaney, Cheryl McMahon, Elena Loreto, Mary Pandone, James E Byrnes, Joe Ploeger, Gail Panipinto, Mary Jean Bennett, Martin Wadham ST ANDREW S is proud to offer for Public Sale Color Prints (22 x 28 ) of Sag Harbor Main Street by local artist Nidia D Alessandro Prints are available to view and for purchase at the Parish Center ground floor level Offices Monday-Friday 10:00AM- 4:00PM UNSIGNED - $3000 SIGNED w/o number - $4000
