WHY? Parish Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning is Biblical

Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people will perish

Jeremiah 29:11-12 For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for well-being, and not for calamity, in order to give you a future and a hope.

We re Not Bad; We re Just Not Yet As Great As We Can Be! I don t keep practicing and getting better because I m not good. I keep practicing and getting better so that I can become the best I can be given all the gifts God has given me.

Don t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability. UCLA Coach John Wooden Won 10 NCAA national basketball championships in 12 years and 7 in a row

Jack Welch Chairman & CEO - General Electric ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Change before you have to.

Strategic planning is described in: Alice in Wonderland

ALICE stands at the fork in the road and asks the CHESHIRE CAT...

Alice: Which road should I take? Cheshire Cat: Where do you want to go little girl? Alice: I don t know. Cheshire Cat : Then it makes no difference...

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. Old Chinese Proverb

Either lead, follow or get out of the way. Patton - Ted Turner - General George S. - Lee A. Iacocca - Thomas Paine - Bill Marianes

WHAT? Parish Strategic Planning

What is Strategic Planning A process to help manage the busyness of our Parish without turning the Parish into a business.

What is Strategic Planning A process for defining our strategy to allocate our resources to achieve our vision A Strategic Plan must answer 4 fundamental questions: 1. Why do we exist? 2. Where are we now? 3. Where do we want to be? 4. How will we get there?

The Essential 4 P s of Church Strategic Planning 1. PROCESS - A comprehensive, inclusive and methodical process and schedule 2. PEOPLE - The right group of diverse and dedicated people leading, developing and implementing the plan, with input from everyone along the way 3. PRODUCT - A comprehensive strategic plan with a detailed implementation plan and timeline 4. PERFORMANCE A comprehensive and wellmanaged implementation process

Questions About The Annunciation Cathedral Strategic Planning Process

What Is The Biggest Challenge Facing Our Church? Entropy Everything in the universe eventually moves from order to disorder (entropy measures that change) If you don t make positive changes you will get negative changes

Leaders of a Church will either be risk takers, caretakers or undertakers. Pastor Rick Warren

What We Need From You 1. Complete your SWOT analysis and get it into the office by Monday, August 6 th 2. Agree to serve on a Strategic Area of Focus Task Force when asked (or volunteer) to serve once they are formed 3. Attend the Parish update presentations this Fall and offer us your input 4. Pray for us and this transformational strategic planning process

Tonight's Rules of Engagement

Rules of Engagement 1. We will speak and interact honestly and respectfully as Children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. 2. Each person will get to speak once for up to 3 minutes until everyone who wants to speak has spoken. 3. Titles, status, position, history and roles of participants are left outside the room as tonight everyone is equal. 4. There can be NO repercussions for anything said tonight. 5. Ask any questions you have. Listen carefully to the answers. 6. Tangential / side issues will be parked.

Rules of Engagement 7. Bill s 3 Bucket Rule applies. Bucket 1 = things we control; Bucket 2 = things we can influence; Bucket 3 = things we can t do anything about. We will focus only Bucket 1 and 2 issues - not Bucket 3 issues. 8. Be honest and no spin. No party lines. 9. Think about what will really make a difference in Christ s Church for the benefit of everyone, not just what you want. 10. No defensiveness. If you wish to disagree, do so agreeably and listen carefully before you speak. ( Seek first to understand, and then to be understood. )

11. Absolutely NO Discussion Killers! (e.g., we tried that once, it won t work, you don t know what you re talking about, etc.) 12. Be positive and encouraging. 13. Speak precisely and make your point succinctly. (Save the long, funny or personal stories for later over an adult beverage.) 14. Don t make anything personal and don t take anything personal. 15. We are all members of the Body of Christ, our Holy Orthodox Church and made in the image and likeness of God. Let s interact with each other as if we were interacting with our Father/Creator. Let us treat one another with love and respect and allow the Holy Spirit to participate freely.

Please Offer Your Answer To One Of The Following Two Questions: 1. What are our key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities or threats? 2. What is your Vision for where we should be in the next 3-5 years?

You have now been called as one of the 70 Disciples Luke 10:1

Years it took to reach 50 million users: Telephone 75 years Radio TV 38 years 13 years Internet Google Plus 4 years 88 days Angry Birds 35 days Pokémon GO 19 days

Modern Smart phones have much more computing power than the Apollo mission computers N.A.S.A. used to go to the moon in the 1960s.

We are living in exponential times

uploaded to 60 hours of video are every minute 1 hour of video is uploaded to every second

We are living in exponential times

Facebook started almost 15 years ago in October 2003. It now has over 2.2 Billion active monthly users. It is has over 1.4 Billion active daily users.

If Facebook were a country......it would be the 2nd largest country in the world... behind only China. Slightly larger than India and 5.5 times bigger than the U.S.

Email Facts 2.76 Billion email users worldwide 225 Billion daily worldwide emails 1 Billion+ Gmail accounts globally 61% of all email is treated as SPAM

We are living in exponential times

In 2014 in the U.S. alone there were an estimated 8.5 BILLION text messages PER DAY

~ 97% of American adults text. ~ Text messages have a 98% open rate versus only 20% for email. ~ 95% of all text messages are read in under 3 minutes.

1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S. in 2005......met online By 2013, 1 out of 3 couples in the U.S. met online

We are living in exponential times So what does all this mean for your Parish and parishioners?

So how are we doing at creating: a good account before the awesome judgment seat of Christ?

What Is the 2017 Financial Stewardship Starting Point for Annunciation Cathedral

How is Annunciation GOC Doing 2017 TOTAL NET INCOME = $1,691,905 Stewardship = 71% ($1,196,956) Disguised Stewardship = 15% ($ 250,667) (trays, fundraisers, misc. donations, candles, etc.) STEWARDS TOTAL = 86% ($1, 447,623) Non-Orthodox TOTAL = 14% ($ 244,282) (festival, rentals)

How is Annunciation GOC Doing 2017 TOTAL NET EXPENSES = $1,553,781 PERSONNEL + OFFICE = 53% ($827,189) (payroll, benefits, supplies, office and church expenses) OCCUPANCY TOTAL = 30% ($466,249) (utilities, insurance, taxes, repairs, cap ex and maintenance) OTHER TOTAL = 17% ($ 260,343) (Archdiocese, ministries, charitable contributions)

How is Annunciation GOC Doing Only 3% of Total Net Expenses were used for Parish chosen Charities and Ministries You ran a surplus of $138,124 (including an $80,000 ADS reimbursement and $65,000 from the Festival)

How is Annunciation GOC Doing 2017 Average Stewardship Stewardship Total = $1,196,956 Number of Steward Units = 647 Average PP Contribution = $712 ¹Assuming 2.6 people per steward household unit Other Average Stewardship Contributions² US Christian Average = $ 880 Evangelical Average = $1,165 Est. G.O. Archdiocese Avg. = $ 275 ² From previously cited sources, please note that these are PER PERSON donations

Median Not Mean Averages Are Irrelevant Average Pledge # s are misleading Median pledge is a better number 3 Donors = $1 $2 $3,000 Total = $3,003 Average = $1,001 Median = $2 Big donors skew averages

How is Annunciation GOC Doing The top 10 stewards contributed 26% of your total stewardship income What s the plan when those 10 individuals die or move to Florida and you lose over a quarter of your total stewardship income The top 10% of stewards gave 53% of your total stewardship income The top 20% of stewards gave 67% of your total stewardship income

How is Annunciation GOC Doing 2017 Mean Median Stewardship Analysis Stewardship Total = $1,196,956 No. of Steward Units = 647 Average Pledge = $1,850 Median Pledge = $850 % Diff Median/Mean = 46% If all 647 stewards contributed only the median pledge of $850 your total stewardship income would only be $549,950 instead of $1,196,956 (or $647,006 (54%) less)

How is Annunciation GOC Doing 2017 Tithe Analysis How close to a tithe are your stewards? Median annual income of Greek Americans = $64,227 A 10% tithe = $6,423 Your median = $850, so your stewards are giving 1.3% of the median income rather than 10%

General Statistical GOA and Annunciation Actual Averages INCOME TOTALS Stewardship = 52% Disguised Stewardship = 20% NO (Non-Orthodox) Income = 28% Ann 71% 15% 14% EXPENSE TOTALS Personnel + Office = 52% Occupancy = 30% Other = 18% 82% Ann 53% 30% 17% 83% ¹This is a compiled statistical average from many different parishes of different sizes from many different Metropolises and areas. This sample is constantly being updated, but the percentages are not changing materially, except for slight decreases in Stewardship and slight increases in Non-Parishioner income.

~ Our $850 median pledge is only 46% of our average ($1,850) which shows an unhealthy concentration in a few generous stewards ~ Top 10 stewards = 26% of total ~ Top 10% of stewards (65) = 53% of total ~ Top 20% of our stewards (130) = 67% of total As Good The Annunciation Cathedral Is Doing ~ 14 % of our income is from non-parishioners ~ Only 3% of expenses funded parish ministries or parish chosen charities ~ Our median pledge ($850) represents an approximate pledge of less than 1.3% of our parishioner estimated income instead of 10%
