Amen. -Church World Servce. HE S RSEN! The begnnngs of the festval of Easter are found. n early Norse mythology. and n early Hebrew hstory. The Norse called t Easter, a festval of sprng, a sea' son of rebrth. When Ea~ter came the hearth fres wer~ lghted anew, and Easter bonfres were lghted upon the hlltops, for the Norsemen beleved that the po"vers of evl were scattered as far as the Easter fres cast ther lght. The Hebrews called t Pascha, ""the passng over H of Hebrew homes when the frst' born of the E~yp' tans were smtten. and devoutly observed the Feast of the' Passover to the tme of Chrst. All over the world festvals of sprng closely, resemble each other. Ths shows a common nclnaton on the part of man to worshp, to reverence, to seek a dvne power n hs unverse. Ths joy n the return of sprngtme, and ths natural nclnaton to worshp, take on a dfferent meanng when consdered n the lght of the Resurrecton, wth ts elements of hope and nspraton. Chrst, n the Resurrec' ton, has brought together the two streams of thnkng-the blnd searchng after a god of the pagan, and the paschal thanks' gvng of the ~ehrew~. He s ""the Lamb that was slan." He removed all doubt concernng the plan of the Creator for the created. He demonstrated to Hs followers forever the realty of eternal lfe. No longer do men need to grope blndly to fnd the true God. Easter today s more than lghtcd bonfres, or solemn feast days, because, "H c ]5 not here: for he s rsen, as he sad." M. W. ED GO-DO What docs Easter mean to you? r)o you worshp n the beauty of t, tremhle ~ wth the nspraton of t, rejoce n the promse of t? After these hgh moments there must come practcal expresson, else Easter becomes a selfsh expcflence. The great commsson was gven after the Resurrecton. Whle \ve are congdern{~ fractcal l:x' presson, let us consder ug ng." WJ a man roh God? What s y ur fnancal standng wth God? s your tthe n the storehouse? Do you hrng the frst fruts'! 184 THE, SABBATH RECORDER 18~, " PREMONTONS OF SPRtNG t s the mddle of March, wth all nature stll n the grp of the ce.. kng. Roadbeds are frozen hard, streams en.. cased n shelds of crystal, mountans and forests wrapped n blankets of snow, plans and valleys flecked wth blotches of ce and patches of blanched, frozen grassall bear evdence of the strong fetters of wnter that ha ve held them for months n a grp of death. " And yet everyone says: to"lt. begns ta look as f sprng were comng!"" There seems to be a premonton-somethng s whsperng to the soul: "Wnter s past; the heart of Nature warms Beneath the wrecks of unrestrcted storms; Doubtful at frst, suspected more than seen, The southern slopes are frnged wth tender green. n!somethng n the faces of those you meet, somethng n ther free, happy walk, somethng 111 the manner of ther sal uta" tons, tells you of ther con, fdence n the near approach of sprng. Ths they can" not hde, though they are stll wrapped n warm furs and heavy coats. ndeed, f you study closely your own nner feelngs, you wll dscover a buoy" ahcy of sprt, a keen enjoyment of the ar you breathe,.and a new sense of lfe n the sunshne about you-coml'nng to make you say, even before you are fully conscous of your words: ""t seems lke sprngr You are satsfed wth freaky, blusterng, changeable March, because every day or two she smles wth a sweet face of sunny skes, and whspers to yo~r. soul of blossom days to come. Though at the very next turn she frowns wth clouded face and gves a.chllng blast, you easly forgve her, because she has assured. you that wnter has lost ts well.. defned char~'cter, and must soon passaway. No matter how stormy and cold the day, you nstnctvely begn wth Bryant, to sng the prases of... March..: The stormy March has come at last,.. Wth wnd, and cloud, and changng skes; hear the rushng of the blast;.. That through the snowy vallay fles. - Ah, passng few are those who speak, Wld stormy month! n prase of thee; Yet, though thy wnds are loud and bleak, Thou art a welcome month to me. For thou, to northern lands agan, The glad and glorous sun dost brng, And thou hast joned the gentle tran And wear"stthe gentle name of Spnng. And, n thy regn of blast and storm, Smles many a long, brght, Bunny day, When th~ changed wnds are soft and warm, And heaven puts on ~he bl~e of May. Then sng aloud the gushng rlls, And the full sprngs, from frost set free, That, brghtly leapn g down the hlls, Ar'e just set out to meet the sea. The year's departng beauty hdes. Of wntry storms, the sullen threat; But, n thy sternest frown abdes A look. of kndly promse yet. Thou brngest the hope of those calm skes. And that soft tme of sunny showers, When the wde bloom, on earth that les, Seems of a brghter world than ours. - f asked to explan why we have these pj"emontons of comng days of bloom, t mght be hard to frame language so as to express t all~ and yet no one could rob us of the nsprng realty of these m, pressons. The fact that we cannot defne them,. makes the mpressons none the less real. But why should ths seem strange? The most real experences. of our nner lfe are always ndefnable. We may be as certan of the c.omng mmortal lfe as we are of the approach of sprng~ and the fact that we cannot explan t n words should, count nothng aganst the realty. s s smply because we lve close to n,ature"s heart that we almost mper' ceptbly catch premontons of the comng s!,rng, even before the more tangble Sgns appear; a.nd why should not the soul that lves close to the heart of nature s God have premontons of lfe"s eternal sprng? He who has promsed that seed, tme and harvest, summer and wnter shall not fal has also p'romsed 'Hs chldren a hom~ beyond the storms of earth, where frosts of wnter shall never come. We ought to have some certan and unmstakable pre' montons of that comng sprngtme, even though now surrounded by the cold blaht.. ng frosts of the earth.. lfe. _... t">. Pleasant, Chrstchurch, New Zealand HAnd he that taketh not hs cross, and followeth after me, s not worthy of me.;~ Matthew 10: 38., For some months a man walked along or stood on the corners of busy streets n our cty. He had a Bble n one hand and a wooden cross n the other. He preached the message of the crclss to all who would hear. He told the people that the cross n hs hand was only a symbol of the cross on. whch Jesus ded to save them from ther sns. Ths same man was brought before the court and, have heard, cast nto prson, for preachng n publc places wthout' a permt. He at.. tended the servce at o ur chapel on sev" eral occasons. talked to hm, but found no fault wth hm. although many seem to ~nd much fault n what they term hs stupd method of wtnessng for Chrst. Now, my readers, am qute sure that f we take the cross of Chrst n anythng lke a lteral way we suffer persecutonthe message of the cross s no more popu" lar today than t was n St. Paurs day. 186 187 '; FROM THE EDTOR'S Dm{ A column wheren the. readers may freely express ther opnons. as long as they do not deal n personaltes or mere controversy. A RABBT OR A DUCK Dear Edtor: read wth nterest the letter wrtten by Rev. Lester G. Osborn n the Rc, corder of February 23,- aqd apprecate hs pont of vew. But as read could not help askng myself, Hs t a rabbt or s t a duck?" t s sad that an artst can draw a rabbt n such a way that to look at t from one angle t looks lke a duck, and from another t looks lke a rabbt., Now the mportance of our havng- a representatve n Amsterdam, for the meetng of the World Councl of Churches. may look to some lke a rabbt \vhch wll take us nto the hole. fnan' cally; but see t as a duck whch gves us, as a denomnaton, the opportunty to sal out nto an ever wdenng sphere of nfluence. Let us get down,to some plan talk. n the eght years snce my enterng the semnary have had three experences whch lead me to beleve that t s m, portant that Seventh Dav Baptsts be represented at nterdenomnatonal meet' lngs. The frst took place at the ntersemnary conventon at New Brunswck, N. J. When each school was called upon to name a representatve to speak for ts group, was made the spokesman for our semnary because happened to be' the senor member. Among other thngs spoke of the Sabbath. After that the other boys knew where we stood, and t opened the way for prvate conversatons. Was the new understandng worth more tha n the cost of the tr p? On another occason was at a meet' ng of the Allegany County Mnsters' Assocaton at Belmont, N. Y. Our speak' er was a Catholc prest who was to speak about the holy days of the calendar year, but \'vho spent most of hs tme changng the day from Sabbath to Sunday. Durng the dscusson perod had an oppor' tuntv to speak, and spoke out boldly n behalf of the Sabbath, trac?g t from Geness through the lfe of Jesus and the early Church. 'Durng the dnner a fel... low mnster sad to' me n the hearng of all,... Almost thou persuadest me to be a Seventh Day Baptst. n My reply was, HNot only thee, but all thy brethren. n dd not make a Sabbath convert there that day, bu.t maybe dd somethng more n ths world of strfe. That mnster seems to have learned tolerance, and now we work together as brothers. The thrd ncdent took place only a few weeks ago on February 8 at the Ale' gany County Youth Rally~at Cuba, N. Y. After the group dscussons, representa' tves of the varous dvsons brought ther fndngs before the entre assembly of more than 150 teen' age youth of dfferent denomnatons. The group on 44What Do Y au Bel~ve?" presented ts fndngs, and someone asked. HWhy do the people at Alfred go 'to Church on Saturday?" For some reason the charman asked me to speak on tls pont, whch gladly dd before ths' mxed assembly. am thank, ful that Seventh Day Baptsts were. represented, for who else hut one of our group would have spoken n behalf of the holy Sabbath? What,"vonderful opportuntes we may have to wtness for Chrst and the Sabbath f we are wllng to make the effort to get to these meetngs. God has no one to speak f Hs spokesmen are not there. n ths world of turmol t 'behooves all the rghteous forces -to work together. n ths age of ndfference the world needs the holy Sabbath of God. Let us make every effort to go where the felds are, and when the opportunty presents tself we can sow the seed. Yours n Hs servce,,charles H. Bond. Lttle Genesee, N. Y. FNANCAL PROBLEMS Dear Edtor: For some tme some of the fnancal problems connected wth publshng the Sabbath Recorder have been a source of deep concern to many of ts frends. At the last sesson of Conference. we were nformed that whle the subscrpton prce remans at $2.50, the actual cost of prnt... ng was 'somethng over $8. Costs have, / 1..l rsen snce that tme. Accordng to the 1947 Year Book, the cost of prntng the Recorder was approxmately three tmes the recepts. Ths stuaton remnds one of the story of the old woman who kept a store, and was n the habt of sayng that the prces on the artcles she sold were below cost. \\,'hen someone rem:trked that he couldn't see how she could do busness that way, she repled that she couldn't f she ddrl~t do a lot of t. Whle our Re' corder stuaton s not exactly parallel, t s true that there would be consderably less loss f the subscrpton lst were-appre' cably extended. Everyone kno,vs that the frst copy to be prnted costs the most money; after that the cost decreases for a consderable number of copes. From the report as gven n the Year Book, t mght well be assumed that per' haps one thrd of our number are readers of the paper. f ths s true, then theo' retcally, at least, the crculaton of the Recorder ought to be three tmes what t s today,' for every good Seventh Day Baptst ought to be ~reader. A solder who gets out of touch wth hs company s not lkely to be a good solder very long. At a co' ordnaton meetng of boards and commttees held n Westerly n De' cember. ths matter was brought up for consderaton and dscussed. At a more recentme~tng of the Commsson, the matter seem! to have been referred to the. Churches. No doubt, that s just wh'ere t belongs. No\,v, \vhat are we gong to do about t? Can we start an every, memher canvass to see how mar.y of that other two thrds of our number we can convnce that they ought to become readers of our denomna, tonal paper? To me, there seems no' other way to do a thorough job. Every mem' ber,of every Church ought to be vsted by a hand' pcked commttee, after the pastor has gven a sermon or talk on the subect. Perhaps a sutable lst of questons could be prepared, by whch consderable val, uable and nterestng nformaton could be gathered. feel sure the Tract Board, and especally the edtor, would welcome ~uch a canvass. When do we start? An. nterested Reader. WE THNK YOU SHOULD KNOW We thnk you should know tha tour denomnaton s laggng far b~hjnd n ts gvng. Here arc. some excerpts from a recent communcaton from the Promoton Commttee of the Denomnatonal Bud~et. HThe frst quarter (Octoher 1, to De' cember 31, 1947) dosed n the red hy a shortage.of $3,594.41.... t (the hud, get) was carefully planned. and every penny s needed to carryon the progranl of the denomnaton.... The Denom, natonal Budget represents fundamental oblgatons whch we must :-ssume." Already we arc feelng a curtalment of the work n a smaller Recorder, nahlty to prnt tracts, and no money for the correspondng secretary of the Tract Socety to carry on feld work. The treasurer of the Tract Socety re' ported at the meetng of the board on March 14, a balance n the General Fund of only $920.R2. wth hlls unpad of 51,255.52. Ths means, of course, that our work must be curtaled n all departments. The harm can be overcome, however, jf we determne t wll, and our confdence s n our people. We belevc that when the facts are known, we wll respond to ths urgent appeal. The Budget Promoton Commttee suggests what wc may do as ndvduals to help the stuaton: ncrease our plcdge to the budgct hy one thrd or as much as we can. Gve a tthe of our ncome to the Lord's work-and addto~al offerngs as perj, odc needs for sacrfcal gvng may arse. Urge others n our Church to ncrease ther weekly g fts. The decson consttutes a g~eat blow to weekday relgous educaton. Even more serous s ts ndcaton of a changng government atttude toward relgon. The decson helps to clarfy the mplcatons of the frst and fourteenth amendmcnts for numerous specfc practces, some of whch are chershed by our Amcrcan people, whle others have been of douhtful value. Thus, t would seem. that a rna'" jorty of the justces clearly dd not ntend and would not approve nvaldaton of the released tme prnc pe. The decson wll requre drastc re' adjustment of exstng practces by week... day schools, whch n the past have been allowed to use publc school property as ha ve other communty organzatons. Ths wll be most serous for rural communtes where Church buldngs are not n close proxmty to publc school buldngs. However, these adjustments can be made f our Amercan people fully realze the ndspensable place of relgon n our Amercan culture. The most serous aspect of the decson S the evdence whch t presents of a shft n government polcy from an att, tude of frendlness, encouragement, and helpful co..-operaton, toward a poston of neutralty f not postve dsnterest. Ths s not n keepng wth our Amercan tradton. Nether do beleve that ths poston was the.ntenton of those honored leaders who framed the frst and four'" teenth amendments of our Consttuton. A strct applcaton of the decson would make llegal many practces whch have perssted snce the foundng of our naton. The offcal polcy of the nternatonal Councl of Relgous Educaton n the lght of ths decson remans to be de' termned. Certanly t wll nclude full complance wth the law as the councl advses the 3,000 communtes wth schools enrollng over 2,000,000 students, these schools now located n forty... sx states. t s obvous that ths wll mean the ds... contnuance of use of publc school buld... ngs for relgous classes as S now the practce of 40 per cent of these com.. muntes. We hope, however, that most of these communtes wll be able to re'" ad just ther procedures so that they can contnue relgous classes off of school premses. The decson wll also mean the ds~ontnuance of certan other practces whch have been followed by a small mnorty.of. weekday systems contrary to the advce of the nternatonal Councl, ncludng (a) regstraton of weekday classes n publc school buldngs, (b) supervtson of classes by publc school authortes, and (c) enterng of grades for relgous classes on publc school re' port cards. t s my hope that our Prott:stant Church forces workng together n the nterna' tonal Councl wll take three steps: Frst, that the Churches wll seek fur' ther clarfcaton of the law wth respect to the released tme prncple. The Su' preme Court opnon does not seem to clarfy ths ssue though t appears ncon.. cevable that the court would deny the rght of publc schools and Churches to so arrange ther schedules as to provde to each an adequate opportunty to exer" ese ts legal functons. Second, that the Churches wll help,"veekday schools to adapt exstng weekday systems so that they wll be brought fully wthn the law as nterpreted by ths and other decsons of the Supreme Court. Thrd, that the Churches wll gve at' tenton to the ncreasng secularsm whch seems to me to be augmented by ths latest decson of the court regardless of ts n' tenton and that t wll take steps to obtan laws whch wll make consttuton' ally pos~ble the wholehearted co... opera.. ton~ of Church and state n the pursuance of ther respectve functons. Weekday relgous educaton on released tme has been developed by the Churches wth the wholehear~ed co'operaton.of many publc school leaders because of a common desre to stem the tde of secu'" larsm whch threatens the relgous faun.. datons of Amercan lfe. t s true that at tmes leaders of a communty have un'" wsely embarrassed publc school author... tes by exceedng ther legal rghts n de... 'Velopng such a program.. These n' stances, of course, are to be deplored. However, thousands of publc educators are as <;oncerned as relgous leaders for the sprtual welfare of Amercan youth. They see the necessty of a close rela.. r ~ tonshp between publc and relgous edu' caton ll prepanng the ctzenry for a democratc naton. Ths decson seems to deny the rght of such co,operaton. Such a denal has senous mplcatons for the future. The Amercan people of all relgous faths should be aroused to a fuller real.. zaton of the trends n our Amercan lfe \.vhch seem to. be further crowdng re' lgon out of a central place n our culture. f a unted stand aganst these trends can be accomplshed, the decson wll have served a good purpose. - Release.
