Thanking you, I remain sincerely yours Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank P. Miloro Cathedral Pastor

St. Nicholas, Protector of the People Nicholas, whose name means Victorious People, was born in Patara, a city of Lycea, in the mid-third century. He was the son of Christian parents. The family was neither very poor that they were pitied by others, nor very rich that they became arrogant in their thoughts. They had what was sufficient for their needs. And yet, at the same time, they were able to help the poor with their alms. The virtue of the parents was reflected in their son. St. Nicholas practiced strict temperance during his entire life, especially on Wednesdays and Fridays, even from his youth. When he was of school age, he avoided those children who were disorderly or spoke unbecoming words. He loved attending church services, and kept company with prudent men from whom he might receive beneficial spiritual advice. On account of his quick mind and the grace of the Holy Spirit, he attained wisdom and knowledge. When Nicholas matured, he showed himself to be an honorable man. He shunned vain conversations, and spent his time in mental prayer and reading spiritual books. Just as St. Nicholas was about to be ordained to the Priesthood, the ordaining Bishop was inspired by the Holy Spirit to utter, before the whole congregation, these prophetic words: Brethren, I see a new sun rising above the earth. Father Nicholas shall comfort and console many of the afflicted, and shall dispatch many souls to the kingdom of heaven. Blessed is the flock that shall be vouchsafed with such a shepherd; for he will nourish the souls entrusted to him on the pasturage of piety. We shall find him a ready helper in misfortunes and tribulations. Father Nicholas lost his parents at an early age. He was left with a small inheritance which he distributed to the poor for food and shelter. He clothed the naked, and cared for the orphans and widows. Through his teaching and life example, many people came to dislike corruptible things, and instead to desire heavenly things. On account of his godly and virtuous life, many tried to emulate him. HOLY FATHER NICHOLAS, PRAY FOR US! ***************************** RUSSIAN NEW YEARS PARTY Saturday, January 15 at 8 PM in the Educational Center. Cost is only $20. This includes a full dinner, dancing, and midnight snacks. Reservations are a must! Call Steve Martyak, chairperson at 254-1430. PIANO LESSONS! Our parishioner, Elena Ulyanova, will provide piano lessons for our children. Children on any level can register. There is more information on the upper and lower level bulletin boards. Elena can be reached at 539-6415. LOOK BUYING SCRIP BENEFITS OUR CATHEDRAL! Scrip comes in the form of gift cards in various monetary denominations. In addition to using the cards as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, etc., you can use them to make your own purchases at grocery stores, gas stations, and numerous retail stores and restaurants. The Cathedral receives a percentage from every gift card purchased! Just think how much you could be helping your church by thinking ahead every week and determining how much you will be spending on groceries, gas, etc., and then buying that much in scrip. Pani Baranik has scrip available for sale every Sunday in the Auditorium following Liturgy. The Eternal Light for the entire month of December is burning for the health of Steve Elko on his 90 th birthday (December 5), offered by Father John A.
