I have deliberately left out most of the family that was born after WWII tho Marvin has much information that I m sure he would be willing to share.

Gard s Endnote: There you have it; pretty much all that is known for sure about the family of Alfred M. Stanley. Yes, there probably are a few errors and yes, we will know more in the future but I m still amazed about the info Marvin has garnered from his home in Northern California using an upright typewriter and a lot of postage. And this is only one family that he is researching. This is the story of quite an interesting group. Most of the children of Alfred M. fit the mold of the backwoodsman as much as of the frontiersman; they seemed at times to be turning their backs on society as much as looking for new land. The land in the Modoc Co., Calif., Lake Co., Ore., Humboldt Co., Nevada is still a desolate, out-of-the-way landscape. They traveled great distances to new land and great distances to visit each other and, when separated, missed each other terribly. We are quite fortunate that this group was as literate as they were [it looks to me that their longer stay in Iowa paid off] and that we have the letters that we do. Geographical notes worth mentioning: 1. Most of the family lived in Lake County Oregon at one time. This should not be confused with Lake County California where John Robert Stanley and Wm. Clemens Stanley, son of Jesse Harris Stanley, spent all of their time in the west. Ozias Lafayette, Christopher and Lemuel Herbert Stanley all spent time in Lake County California. I believe Alfred M. was there also. Records of Alfred M. appear in Mauldin s notebook on Lake County history tho most are due to Marvin. 2. The Big Valley referred to is around Adin in Lassen Co. However, many of the Lake County, California contingent lived in Big Valley near Kelseyville. Another point, I am a believer that the English language most people of the 19 th century used was primarily a spoken language. The spelling in most of the letters indicate more application than study. This may lap over to the middle names which makes an interesting pastime tho conclusions are difficult. It would seem they include heros, family members and popular names of the day. As writing seems to have been mostly a chore [except for John Robert] I m not surprised the spellings of the more unusual names changed a bit over time. William s middle name could be Foster or Forrester. A Wm. Forster was prominant in Ashville and Buncomb Co. N.C. when Alfred M. Stanley was born but no indication of a connection. Jesse s name could come from a Harris family [see below]. Oliver Havard could be from Oliver Hazard Perry [who was named for a family member]. About John Robert, I have no idea. One reference has: Ozias, whose son Jonathan was custodian of the treasures possessed by King David outside of Jerusalem (I Par., xxvii, 25) and there are other Biblical references; Lafayette probably refers to the Marquis. Francis Marion was the swamp fox. Christopher Columbus we know. For Lemuel Herbert I don t have a guess. Joseph Duncan sounds Scottish. Alfred Newton possibly could have been named for Isaac Newton. Mary Elizabeth was popular at the time. LewAnna was likely named for Alfred M. s sister. Cela Jane I m not sure of. I

Alfred M. s family reused names often to honor the relative and several names of Alfred M. s children show up in Luanna Randolph s and Jonathan Stanley s families. They also show up in other Stanley families that I cannot connect indicating possibly that the families are actually connected or that the names were popular at the time. I have deliberately left out most of the family that was born after WWII tho Marvin has much information that I m sure he would be willing to share. As for the future, there will probably be errata from time to time. I hope that most of the future distributions will be on CD-ROM as that will be less expensive, easier to file [and lose] and more searchable relieving me of the necessity of doing an index. Also, I hope to have most of this information on the web soon. When it exists it should be findable by searching on my full name and Stanley. An endnote, from a later letter from Marvin. Gard: Re: Ester Stanley whom I thought may be a sister of Alfred M. I was in error. I found later that she was a daughter of Jacob Stanley who was born 1806 in Campbell Co., Tenn. He was a son of Reuben Stanley. This family came to Ray Co., Mo. about 1831 and it is Reuben who md. Elizabeth Patterson (or Hatfield, never proved which). Among their children were Sarah who md James Hatfield born about 1786 in Va. is supposed brother of old Reuben Hatfield of Decatur Co. Iowa. Reuben Stanley s children: a. Andrew Stanley b. abt 1790, md. Sarah Ballew and he d. by 1840 and she and son Alfred S. Stanley are in Livingstone Co., Mo. in 1840; Mercer Co. was formed later. b. Ester Stanley b. about 1824 md a Hatfield. c. Jacob b. 1806 md. a Moad. d. Elizabeth md. a Moad. e. Probably others. Now Andrew Stanley had children who are in Decatur Co. 1850 census. Sarah was not the wife of Hiram but his mom. Children of Andrew and Sarah Ballew Stanley: a. Alfred S. Stanley b. 1817 md Elizabeth Heather. b. Eliza J. Stanley b 1817 md Nolton c. Hiram J. Stanley b. about 1818 md. Hannah Ballew; evidently he later lived in Mercer or Grundy Co., Mo. d. Mary Stanley b. about 1820 md John Vanderpool and their daughter, Martha md John M. Hatfield. i. Martha died young and he md 2 nd Serena Stanley, daughter of Aaron Robert Stanley who was probably a brother of Alfred M. Stanley. ii. John Meyers Hatfield was a brother of Joseph Hatfield who md. Polly Heather the sister of Alfred M. Stanley s wife, Margaret. II

iii. A daughter of Joseph and Polly Heather Hatfield md. Andrew Stanley who was a son of Alfred S. Stanley and Polly Heather. [whew, gm] e. Easter Stanley b. about Anthony Vanderpool f. Abram Stanley was evidently a minister as he md. Serena Stanley to John M. Hatfield. g. Calvin Stanley h. Reuben Stanley b. about 1834. Andrew Stanley s brother Jacob md. Elizabeth Moad and their daughter, Ester b. 1825 is the one I thought might be a sister of Alfred M. Stanley but I was wrong. To date the only ones that I think are siblings of Alfred M. are: Aaron Robert, John Jonathon and Luanna Elizabeth with the possibility of Benjamin. Re: the Decatur County burials: 1. Joseph Stanley who died in the civil war served in Co. K. 23 rd Mo. Infantry; he was a son of Alfred and Margaret Stanley. 2. In Bethel Cemetery, F.M. Co. D. 4 th Iowa Infantry c. 1862 is a son of Alfred and Margaret Stanley. 3. Peggy Stanley has to be Margaret, wife of Alfred M. Stanley. 4. Sally Stanley, mother of A., is probably Sarah Ballew Stanley the mother of Alfred S. Stanley and those listed above. 5. Stanley, wife of Alfred Stanley Jr. is probably the son of John Jonathan Stanley who had son Alfred L. Stanley who married a Mary. Now the Warrick connection. Moses B. Hatfield md. Rebecca Warrick. I suspect she is a sister of Elizabeth Ann who md. Moses B. Hatfield s 1 st cousin Ralph Hatfield. Elizabeth Ann s sister, Hannah, d. in 1894. Hannah, Elizabeth Ann & Rebecca s brother, Robert md. Martha Hatfield, a sister of Moses B. Hatfield. These are the parents of Nancy Ann Hatfield, wife of Oliver H. Stanley. Now as to Mahala Ann Culp. If this was her true maiden name, then perhaps her mom later md. a Smith. As info I received years ago said Mahala Ann Smith. But I m glad this is straightened out. It also reinforces the fact that Grimes was given as the maiden name of my Nancy Ann Hatfield. Marvin L. I have seen a Hatfield site where Nancy was listed as the first wife of Moses and Nancy Grimes was the second wife. Also, a letter to the Stanley List on the net from Dan Stanley gave his part of the Stanley family as: The Stanley family I am researching, any help will be appreciated. He was living on the same property as Calvin who was b. in Hendricks Co., Ind. about 16 mo. after Alfred M. Stanley s second son, Jesse Harris Stanley. Also, not the name Harris shows up several times in the above list as well as in Jonathan s family. A Harris and Page Stanley are in Buchanan Co., Mo. on the 1840 census; they later moved to Oregon; I believe them to be Reuben IV

Stanley s brother and his son. Jacob, Reuben s father, was said to have been b. in Derbyshire; other records have his parents and grandparents as very early settlers of Hartford, Conn. Gard Meddaugh 1355 Bonita Mtn. View, Calif., 94040 650-968-7622 V
