nr SIDELIGHTS By Steve lloss Ths beng Coach Ralph Eeebes frst year as a football coach, we thnk specal recognton should be gven fne coachng team has receved. Ths years team s probably one of hardest httng teams school has seen n several years and certanly Ralph has been very nstrumental n ughenng up players. Although coach snt one drve hs players hard, he seems possess that qualty that brngs best out of team durng games. So far Quakers havent been able wn a game ths year, but both games have been good, clean, hard fought contests. A better brand of football has been dsplayed so far ths year than team was playng at any tme last year. We beleve that Coach Beebes sncere way of coachng has been a real asset and an nspraton fellows.. Congratulatons Tgers on r showng ths year! The Tgers were pcked be near botm of TVV league standngs hut y have shown that y are a team, be consdered. Despte two close defeats (20-19 Hllsboro and 7-6 McMnnvlle) we hope sec Tgers near p of fnal standngs. The ctzens of and students of GFC arc all rootng for you. Football on natonal scale seems be havng a psy-turvy year. All over country favored teams are fndng t hard lve up r predctons. Such powerhouses as Maryland, Notre Dame, Sourn Calforna, Illnos, and Oregon are fndng out what we experenced long ago, you cant wn all of m. A recent column n one of Portland papers pcked only one game correctly n ts weekly predctons. The only correct predcton was 21-20 vcry by UCLA over Washngn. That game was supposed be a walk-away. Ths year college football has shown somethng that has been lackng for so long, that "do or de" sprt. In ths day of professonalzed college football, school and team sprt are often put on sdelnes, but recent games have shown that sonje of that sprt s returnng. To use as an example: Unversty of Washngn Huskes. When three of Huskes key players were njured, team was counted out for rest of season, but thy have capably contnued wthout stars. Probably largest facr n r success has been team sprt. Startng ths year Metropoltan conference wll be an rght team league, two new members beng Multnomah College and Western Conservatve Baptst semnary. Multnomah college was a member of league several years ago but t qut conference and Multnomah School of Bble ok ts place. As far as ths wrter las been able learn, ths s semnarys frst venture n organzed basketball. Basketball practce wll soon begn for. those fellows not playng football. The bggest worry Coach Gerald Lcmmons wll have wll be fndng replacements for Cub Crmm and Verne Martn, regulars for last years second place fnshers. Wth only sf lettermen returnng, se replacements mght conc from some of several promsng freshmen. Among leadng freshmen canddates wll be: Arnold Wllcuts, Bll Hopper, Mel Lamm, Nel Person and Jm Anderson. The sx lettermen who wll form nucleus for ths years team are Roly Hartley am Don Lamm, forwards; Orvlle Wnters and Dck Zeller, centers; and Clnt Brown and Steve Ross, guards. Rumors have been flyng on possblty of agan organzng a pep band. Last year band dd much encourage cheerng secton and boost morale of players. Wth muscal talent that s on campus ths year a fne pep band could be formed.
