THOMAS MCARTHUR ANDERSON PAPERS ACC. NO. 1973-003 GUIDE Biographical/historical: Primarily documents the life of Thomas McArthur Anderson (1836 1917), who fought in the Civil War, commanded the Vancouver Barracks, and led the U.S. Army expedition to quell the Philippine Insurrection in 1898. It also includes material relating to other prominent family members, including Richard Clough Anderson, who served in the Revolutionary War; Duncan McArthur, former governor of Ohio; William Marshall Anderson, son of R.C. Anderson; and Charles Anderson, former governor of Ohio and Kentucky. Thomas McArthur Anderson was born in Chillicothe, Ohio to a family with a long military tradition. He was an attorney until the Civil Was began, when he joined the Sixth Ohio Volunteers. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Lt. Colonel. After the war, he was stationed for 14 years at Fort Ringgold on the Texas border, and then was appointed commander of the Vancouver (Wash.) Barracks in 1886. He was a Brigadier General by the time of the Philippine Insurrection. Promoted to Major General upon his return in 1899, he retired in 1900. He then served as commander of the Ohio Old Soldiers Home, 1900-1904. He moved to Portland in 1904, where he died in 1917. For more complete biographical information on Thomas McArthur Anderson, see Charles A. Gauld's article, "America's First General Overseas," in box 3 of the papers. Scope and Content: Although the bulk of these papers relate to Thomas M. Anderson, they consist of two distinct groups of material. The first is 19th to early-20th century papers of the Anderson family, especially Thomas M. Anderson. These papers can be found in the main arrangement and the Thomas M. Anderson subgroup. The second group consists of writings, notes, and miscellaneous materials accumulated by Charles A. Gauld, professor of history and geography at Miami-Dade Community College (Florida) and grandson of Thomas M. Anderson, as part of his genealogical research. Anderson's memoirs include an account of the Battle of Antietam. Notes on arrangement; This accession is a merger of 1973, 1973-002 (Anderson, Thomas M.) and 487 (Anderson Family).
1 large map of the Philippines transferred to Maps, 3/16/90. The arrangement of the notes series in the Gauld subgroup is somewhat random. The original folder headings were retained, but these headings are not always accurate. The notes were originally mingled with clippings, letters, and other material, some of which was related, and some of which was apparently in random order. The subject series consists of articles, clippings, postcards, and miscellaneous material. Subject files were created when there was sufficient material to do so (usually at least two items). The remaining material was placed in the clippings series as unsorted clippings. Provenance: This collection was donated in installments by Charles Anderson Gauld beginning in 1945, with additions made in 1952, 1972, and 1973. It remains unclear whether Gauld, Thomas M. Anderson, or another family member brought together the family papers, as both Gauld and Anderson conducted genealogical research. The papers were processed in December, 1991 by Janet Crum, and measure 1.5 cu. ft.
