Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition February 19-25, 2017 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema Music 41 The explanation why he did not use D. K. Pattammal s Sri Saraswathi Namosthuthe in Miss Malini was given by Vasan years later in a chat with this writer. The character Malini is a poor woman who, out of poverty, is forced to seek a livelihood by going onstage. Her father is unwell and she has no money to buy medicines for him. So she takes the test and sings the song. A person of such background in such a difficult situation will feel nervous and even scared. And Malini is not a trained musician. Such a woman could not be expected to sing with such class, perfection and brilliance which Pattammal definitely had and revealed in her singing. Malini could never sing like that! That was the reason I did not use Pattammal s rendering and got a regular playback singer, T. V. Ratnam, to sing that song instead!. A convincing explanation from a serious filmmaker! Pattammal sang songs in Tamil and Sanskrit in Chittoor V. Nagaiah s Telugu film classic Thyagaiah. And a few other forgotten films. Because of her family background, tradition and Brahmin middle class values, Pattammal never sang love duets and hardly saw the films in which her songs were featured! After she rose to dizzying heights of success and fame in the Carnatic music world, she moved away from films. Though she had sung in too few films, her songs of Bharathiyar in Naam Iruvar shall ever remain immortal melodies! Papanasam Sivan - A Cinematic Perspective If Tamil film music is today part of life among Tamilians anywhere in the fast-shrinking world, a good part of the credit should go undoubtedly to Papanasam Sivan. Classical Carnatic Music maestro, legend in his lifetime, legend that still lives even after his departure for the yonder blue and beyond, a savant of music hailed as Thamizh Thyagaiah, his contribution to Tamil cinema, its music, and more more precisely its songs, is richly outstanding. Indeed his body of work in cinema awaits a proper, full length and in-depth study. He truly laid the firm foundation for film songs to become popular during the 1930-1940s almost single-handedly. Besides, he made Carnatic music popular among the common folks with his scintillatingly melodious film songs based on traditional Carnatic raagas. If a list of the immortal melodies of Tamil cinema is taken, a good number of them of the early decades would be his creations: Radhey Unakku Kopam (Chintamani), Natakame Ulagam Chintamani), Gnana Kann Ondru (Chintamani), Sivaperuman Kripai (Satyaseelan), Maa Ramanan Uma Ramanan (Seva Sadanam), Manamey Kanamum Maravathey (Savithri), Manmatha Leelayai (Haridas), Krishna Mukunda Murarey (Haridas), Dheena Karunakaraney Nataraja (Thiruneelakantar), Characharangal Varum (Thiruneelakantar), Un Azhagai Kaana (Thiruneelakantar), Unnai Kandu Mayangaatha (Ashok Kumar), Satrey Sarinda Kuzhaley (Ambikapathi), Vadhaname Chandra Bimbamo (Sivakavi), Kavalayai Theerpathu Naattiya Kalaiye (Sivakavi), Soppana Vaazhvil (Sivakavi), Neea Illaamal Anuvum Asaiyumo (Pankajavalli), Enthan Idathu Tholum Kannum (Sakunthalai). And dozens more! Papanasam Sivan created them all! In recent years, two of his film songs Maa Ramanan Uma Ramanan and Manamey Kanamum are sung regularly by Classic Carnatic musicians in their concerts and have won popularity. Indeed not many are aware that Maa Ramanan in Hindolam was sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi in K. Subramanyams hit film Seva Sadanam (1938)! Cinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931 with H. M. Reddi s Kalidas produced in Bombay by the Indian film pioneer, Ardeshir Irani, the maker of the first Indian talking picture Alam Ara in the same year. It inherited the legacy of Tamil theater where songs ruled the roost. Everybody sang: the hero and heroine, message-bearing maids, comedians and all the king s men and women. Even the villain sang, while approaching to dishonour the heroine, in praise of her bodily assets, and the rare joys and rapturous thrills awaiting her thanks to his macho power! Even a dying man would sing before he took his last breath! (To be continued) If anything interesting is happening in your neighbourhood please inform Mambalam Times. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Brindavan Street Extn. pedestrian unfriendly Sir, Brindavan Street Extn. is an arterial road connecting West T. Nagar with Mambalam and Ashok Nagar. Apart from regular vehicles, school buses, heavy vehicles and MTC buses also use this road, and traffic is heavy during peak hours. The road margins are used permanently for parking cars and trucks thereby reducing the carriageway. Free flow of traffic is affected and pedestrians are forced to walk in the middle of the road thereby putting their lives at risk. Resident associations and individuals have appealed to traffic authorities several times to enforce No Parking rule on the road but to no avail. About two years back, the police convened a meeting in which this grievance was raised and the authorities had then promised that they would allow parking only on one side of the road. This was welcomed, but nothing happened afterwards. I request the authorities concerned in the Traffic Cell to immediately implement No Parking rule in Brindavan Street Extn. to ease traffic flow and make it safe for pedestrians. S. Krishnamoorthy, 4, Mathanghi Flats, 27, Brindavan Street Extn., West Mambalam Leaning EB junction box on Bharathi Salai Sir, During Vardah cyclone last December, an EB junction box in Bharathi Salai toppled over and one of its legs broke. It has since been set upright by EB workers and placed atop its brick foundation. It is now standing precariously on three legs and resting on the compound wall of the plot adjacent to it. It can topple over anytime and poses a grave danger to unwary passersby. I have made several complaints to EB officials but no action has been taken so far. Hope that this letter wakes the officials up to the danger. L. J. Eswar, 10, Bharathy Salai, West Mambalam Bus-stop shelter encroaches on road Sir, A new bus-stop shelter has been constructed on the pavement in Bharathy Nagar in North Usman Road, T. Nagar. Nearly 3 feet of its platform is extending off the pavement and onto the road margin. It is hampering movement of vehicles and is also posing a danger at night as the protrusion is not clearly visible. I appeal to the officials concerned to demolish the portion of the platform that is extending into the carriageway. Dr. R. Narasimhan, T. Nagar Be wary of phishing over phone Sir, The other day, a caller, identifying himself as a senior SBI official, told me that my debit card has been blocked. When I asked him what he was talking about, he stated that my SBI Debit card has become invalid. Suspecting foul play, I told him that I do not have a bank account with SBI and disconnected the call. I then personally went and met the branch manger and told him about the unsolicited phone call. He checked my account and told me that my debit card was active and said I did the right thing by cutting the call. He further stated that no bank official will solicit any financial/bank information over phone. He explained further that such callers would misguide one with sweet talk or threats and try to extract details like card number, ATM pin/password by promising to revalidate the card, and misuse it for swindling money from the account or do online purchases. I am writing this letter to warn readers, especially unwary senior citizens, to beware of such criminals who try to extract banking information over phone. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND TALK, TALK, TALK Tall friend and his short daughter walked in one recent evening when all Chennai was agog on the post-jaya scenario on who will bag the TN throne. All that we could make out was that the Governor was waiting for a signal from Heaven. This being an adult only show, my friend s daughter had not even switched off her phone when she walked in and continued her mumble on the electronic device for about an hour ignoring the tea and eats placed before her. We adults had little to talk about and the small talk lasted just a couple of minutes. Failing to elongate it, I embarrassingly suggested a session at the TV room to see who is in or out or who has devised a cinematic escape from Koovathurso as to be present at the swearing in of whomever is pitch forked to be in the CM s chair. The TV gave no clue of who is the cleverer one and we went back to the drawing room only to find the girl still with the phone fully dawdling away to the unknown caller. I now know that the chap who cursed the world with the mobile phone was the greatest scientist since Newton who stumbled upon the Theory of Relativity. The girl spoke for another hour and it was only when the battery died that her talk too died. I gave her a long glass of orange juice and a small cup to her father. He said, the recharge costs me half my pension every time she touches the phone. I think I am the only guy around who does not use this electronic marvel that makes blood pressure rise, come day or night. Otherwise I would have been tempted to call and greet Edappadi saying, Eda, how does it feel to be CM? Don t have a mobile phone! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Permanent exhibition on 5000-year Tamil history Sir, After reading an online article, I recently went to see the permanent exhibition on the History of Tamil Culture in the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Taramani. The exhibition encompasses 5000-year-history of Tamil culture. IITS was established in 1970 to do research on Tamil culture and to propagate the language. The wealth of information at the exhibition about the rich Tamil history left me stunned. I never knew that our culture was so advanced that ancient Tamils could weave cloth so fine that yards could be packed in a matchbox, that they compared pinpoint surgery to a bird picking fish from deep waters and painted planets on the ceilings of their bedrooms. The exhibition, through pictures, artefacts, inscriptions, models, maps, implements and manuscripts, explains the evolution of Tamils as a settled group, their inventions to make life comfortable, their superior talent in weaving, growing crops, trade, ocean navigation, state administration, advancement in medicine, water management and formation of a society. The other attraction is the mini theater where short films, videos and clippings of out culture through sculptures and murals from temples are shown. The exhibition is divided into five galleries. Tholkappiar Arangam displays art forms. Thiruvalluvar gallery displays metal craft/ agriculture, education, medicine and weapons. Kapilar gallery showcases implements and exhibits on temples and gods. Avvaiyar Arangam is all about the life-like depictions of historical events in the life of kings and Ilango Adigal gallery is about ship-building and sail-weaving. A mini lighthouse is also displayed here. I encourage everyone, especially students, to visit the exhibition to know about the rich history of Tamils. R. Shanmugasundaram, N Block, East Anna Nagar Damaged EB post in Moorthy Street Extn. poses danger Sir, I reside in Moorthy Street Extn. There are three 20-foot tall concrete TNEB posts in our street with cables for providing power to some of the older houses. The other houses in the street get supply through underground cables. One of the concrete posts in front of my house is in a damaged condition. There are huge cracks in the post and it is likely to fall anytime thereby posing a grave danger to passersby. There is a likelihood of its toppling into our compound as well. We have sent a complaint to TNEB officials and appeal to them to replace the post immediately.
