The Messenger Volume 17 No. 11 November 2017 The Newsletter of The United Church of Sandwich Passionately united to feed all people body, mind and spirit To the glory of God! From the Pastor.Steve Reminder: Mindrup Submit names to be remembered on Sunday Nov. 5 On Sunday, November 5 we will honor and remember those significant persons in our lives who have gone before us. In our prayers and during Holy Communion we will read the names of UCS members, friends and family who have died since last November. Please contact the church office with your loved one s name and supply a picture if you wish. You may also remember a friend or family member from previous years by bringing in a picture or a brief word of remembrance. As early as the fifth century AD, the Church had developed a day to commemorate the martyrs and holy men and women too numerous to be named who had been faithful witnesses to Christ. All Saints has evolved into a celebration of all of those faithful ones who have led exemplary lives and who have been significant in the life of our church, for us personally, or both. A saint does not have to be a Mother Teresa or a Peter or Paul. A saint can be anyone whose manner of life reflects faith in God and who has given and received love. On All Saints Day we remember that we become holy sanctified not by our own puny efforts but by the grace of God in his Son. Grace alone, which God supplies; strength unknown he will provide. Christ in us, our Cornerstone; we will go forth in grace alone! ( The Faith We Sing, No. 2162) Steve Mindrup

Celebrate Thanksgiving with us, Wed. Nov. 22, 7:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church We will gather for the annual community Thanksgiving service this year at Salem Lutheran Church, Wednesday, Nov. 22, 7:00 pm. Clergy and members from UCS, Salem Lutheran, and Federated will participate. The choirs from each church will combine to offer music of praise and thanksgiving. The offering will be given to a community project selected by the host congregation. Mission of the Month Ed and Jane Heyer want to thank everyone for sharing their 60th wedding anniversary with cards and good wishes. The Sharing Pantry The Sharing Pantry is the local food pantry with facilities in St. John s Lutheran Church in Somonauk. In addition to weekly distribution of food items, they provide holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Several members of UCS spend most of their Thursday mornings volunteering at the Sharing Pantry. In addition to the financial support that UCS provides, we also contribute food items throughout the year, and we provide freezer space at our church for the pantry to use for meat and other perishables. We also help the pantry by recycling our cardboard boxes. Earl Shaffer is able to redeem the cardboard for cash, which benefits the pantry. We will be decorating the church for the Advent and Christmas season Saturday, December 2. We will be putting up lights, trees, decorations and sending Christmas cards to our shut in friends. The time we will start is 9:00 am and we hope to be finished by 11:00 am. Please join us in creating a beautiful and festive sanctuary for the important Advent/Christmastide season. See you there! Remember to turn your clocks back on Sunday, November 5! 3
