Originals. 1988.29.2 See also: Manuscripts Collections 41 and Small Collection 1419 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Nathaniel Lucas was born in Brunswick County, Virginia around 1755. He married Sarah Rivers (daughter of Robert Rivers) on 16 April 1783 in Greenville County, Virginia. They had the following children: Charles (1784-1858), Robert W., John, Sallie, Betsy, Tabatha and Rebecca H. Nathaniel served as an Ensign in Captain James Lucas Company, 4 th Virginia Regiment during the American Revolution. He was commissioned as Ensign, 19 March 1776, as second Lieutenant, 28 September 1776, as 1 st Lieutenant, 7 June 1777. He was transferred to Captain John Stith s Company in the same Regiment in September 1778, was appointed Quartermaster in June 1778, was promoted to Captain in May 1778 and was rendered Supernumerary 14 September 1778. He received a large land grant in Warren County, seven miles north of Bowling Green on the Louisville & Nashville Turnpike. This land grant stayed in the Lucas family from 1805 to 1956 when it was sold to Dr. S. J. Martin. Nathaniel emigrated to Warren County, Kentucky around 1805. He died 5 April 1807 in Warren County and his will was probated later that year. Nathaniel s oldest son Charles married Ester Barnett (1788-1863); they are both buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Mount Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Warren County. Their son Nathaniel Henry Lucas (1818-1908) married Mary Barton Maury (1833-1907) on 5 April 1850. They had the following children: Charles, Clara, Jennie, Mary, Walker, and Henry. He was a large landowner in the Sunnyside section of Warren County and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Nathaniel died 9 November 1908 and was buried in the Smiths Grove cemetery. Nancy Clyde Lucas, who was interested in Lucas family history, became a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution on 3 April 1912. She was a faithful member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green. Miss Lucas died on 7 November 1969 and was buried in the Smiths Grove cemetery.

2 COLLECTION NOTE This collection contains information about the Lucas family of Warren County, Kentucky, including genealogical data that traces the family back to Nathaniel Lucas from Brunswick County, Virginia. Throughout the collection, the researcher will find information about Nathaniel and his military service during the American Revolution. Of particular note is a transcript of a 1781 letter in which Nathaniel writes to his future wife, Sarah Rivers, just before the Battle of Yorktown. The original of this letter can be found in Manuscripts Small Collection 1419. Genealogical correspondence related to the Lucas family is also found throughout the collection. Other items of note include: an 1824 letter describing an overland wagon trip from Warren County, Kentucky to New London, Missouri (folder 1); several Warren County stock certificates found in folders 9 and 11; a detailed letter written by a participant in the California Gold Rush, 1849 in folder 3, and a number of Lucas family photographs in folder 12. The photographs have been labeled and placed in the Kentucky Library Collection. A number of the letters in the collection have been typescripted to prevent handling the originals and for ease of reading.
