Frank Szatmari is willing to visit with those who need pastoral support. Please call Rev. Frank for appointment request at 226-647-4705. Next Week: A Generation Who Does Not Want To Serve God Our guest musician this morning is Gwen Potter, a recent immigrant from England, where she performed with a Barn Dance band and played for a group of Morris Dancers. Gwen brought her love of folk tunes and songs with her across the pond and joined a band called Tethera, specialising in tunes and songs from the British Isles and Canada. They regularly perform at festivals and 1812 Battle Re-enactment settings. Gwen plays a viola d amore, a many-stringed musical instrument with some of the strings running under the fingerboard called sympathetic strings or drone strings. It was used chiefly in the baroque period, late 17th Century, and played under the chin in the same manner as the violin. It shares many features of the viol family. An intricately carved blind cupid s head at the top of the peg box is common in original instruments. Cupid is depicted with a blindfold over his eyes since love is blind. Gwen has produced a CD of Celtic dance tunes and songs collected from the British Isles and Canada, entitled Mary Young and Fair (which is the title of one of the tracks on her CD. The tune is an old Scottish ballad). Gwen will be playing one or two tunes from her CD during the service. If you would like a copy for just $10, please contact Marion Reid in your congregation, who will pass one on to you. Mission Moment: Finding her voice Shumaila, a timid 16-year-old from Afghanistan, dreamed of having the confidence to work in politics and guide the peaceful development of her country. One day, her school s principal announced that a summer camp offering training on human rights, leadership and public speaking would be starting shortly. The camp, supported by Presbyterian World Service & Development, lasted four days but changed Shumaila s life forever. I became confident and developed knowledge on politics and the rights of women and children, she shares proudly. In a mock election, Shumaila was voted president but she won more than just a title. It was during the election campaign that I got the confidence required to deliver speeches in public. With this support, Shumaila participates in school activities and voices her opinions at community events. PWS&D empowers women and girls Stewardship Moment - Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received only what you have given: a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage. -St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), Italian Roman Catholic friar and preacher
