Order of Worship September 23, 2018 REFLECTION AND PREPARATION Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. - Matthew 7:24-25 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 5:16 The imagery of the living stones being built into a single unit implies that the significance and purpose of the individual Christian cannot be realized apart from community with other believers. - Karen Jobes Welcome and Announcements *Call to Worship Psalm 25:1-2a, 4-5, 10a, 1 Timothy 1:17 (Leader) To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust. (All) Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Leader) All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness. (All) To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. *prayer of adoration corporate Confession Let us pray: Great Father of mercies, quiet our anxious thoughts and help us to be still before you. We confess that we do not run to you as our refuge and strength, but turn to many other sources of hope and help when our souls are troubled. We fill our days with busyness and clutter our thoughts with the cares of this world. Forgive the ways we have not rested in you. You have said you are our refuge and our souls are to wait for you, yet we are impatient and do not wait. We run from thing to thing, thought to thought, fearing that if we sit still we will lose control. Help us to rest in you and forgive the ways that our restlessness reflects our lack of trust. Turn our hearts towards you. Help us to depend upon you and trust you, our rock and our refuge, for all that we need. Hear now our silent prayers of personal confession... Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon Romans 6:22-23 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 3

*SONG of faith By Grace I m Saved, Grace Free and Boundless Scheidt, 1742 Parker Adams By grace I m saved, grace free and boundless. My soul believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has scripture ever falsehood taught? No; then this word must true remain: By grace you too shall heav n obtain. By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; our works and conduct have no worth. God in his love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, and we are saved by grace alone. By grace! O mark this word of promise when you are by your sins oppressed, When Satan plagues your troubled conscience, and when your heart is seeking rest. What reason cannot comprehend God by his grace to you will send. By grace! This ground of faith is certain; so as long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, what in his word our God commands, What our whole faith must rest upon, is grace alone, grace in his Son. 5
sermon Built 1 Peter 2:1-12 1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame. 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, 8 and A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. (Pastor) This is the Word of the Lord. (All) Thanks be to God. 6
